IRELAND'S EYE
On a second raceless day in Ireland there are four meetings in the UK with Brighton and Lingfield (grass and AW) providing the afternoon action while its off to the all weather at 5-20 with Kempton staging an 8 race card. However we will be concentrating on the sole jumps racing with Hereford carrying the can and here we will be siding with a lightly raced 7yo in the opening novice hurdle for an in form stable and Tony McCoy and Evan Williams can combine with a long absent sort to land a novice chase.
We added another double to our recent winning tally with former Irish point winner Havingotascoobydo (9/4 on DAQ morn-10/11) registering our third winning nap in a row in the bumper while earlier in the day Benedict Spirit (6/4-4/5) comfortably took a handicap hurdle with saver Ladies Day (7/1) back in third. However our other two selections Openditch (7/2) and Miss Saffron (7/2) could only finish third in a novice chase and handicap hurdle.
A son of Exit To Nowhere Peter Bowens Runaway Harry cannot be described as overaced but the 7yo looks to have fair prospects of getting his head in front by taking the 2m 4f novice hurdle at Hereford at 2-10. He started a short priced favourite to land a bumper two years ago on heavy but disappointed but he has returned to action after more than sixteen months off the track recently and though he started at big odds on both occasions he shaped with some promise in each and he was still ‘in the hunt’ when departing two from home at Ffos Las over todays trip last time in a novice hurdle won by Irish raider Russian War. Though this is his third start in three weeks Tom O’Briens mount is given the nod to see off Michael Keighleys The Fox’s Decree who has proved consistent if somewhat expense to follow having been placed in a bumper and handicap hurdle over the minimum trip and also been placed at three miles. Though he did disappoint last time over 3m the drop back to this trip should suit and 99 rated hurdler looks to have fair prospects of opening his hurdles account at the 11th attempt.
Winter Stars sole appearance at Hereford saw the then 8yo easily land a 2m 4f novice hurdle almost 2 years ago and though Evan Williams runner makes a return visit following a lengthy absence he could still prove the answer to the 3m 1 1/2f novice chase at 3-40. Tony McCoy gets the leg up on the son of Overbury and the 133 rated hurdler can beat some ordinary opposition here with his yard in decent form and with ground and trip (won at 2m 7f twice) the best of whom may be the two time hurdle winner and 109 rated chaser Chevy To The Levy who has been placed twice from seven starts over the larger obstacles.
‘Dickie’ Johnsons mount One Of The Boys has been finding it difficult to get his head in front in recent efforts over fences but a return to a track which has seen him finish second and third on last two starts here since the end of last year may just ‘prove the ticket’ today in the 2m 3f hc chase at 4-40. A 101 rated chaser who has won at Plumpton and Fontwell (2m 2f) the lightly raced 9yo has only lost out by just over a length on three of his last four starts (once over course over minimum trip) and though he was well held in third last time at Bangor over 2m 5f he can return to winning ways here for the Tim Vaughan yard with the former Christy Roche trained Courella likely to pose the main danger having shown a little on his last Irish start before making a winning bow for the Evan Williams yard less than two weeks ago in a Fontwell hc chase over a furlong less. Now just 6lbs higher in the weights the unexposed 6yo should continue his progress and will be suited by ground/weight.
4-10 HEREFORD – 2m 1f novice hc chase
Having proved modest on the flat Paul Nicholls 5yo TIGNELLO has looked more at home over flights and though he exited when holding second spot on hurdles debut he did record an easy success in an average novice over CD two weeks ago under todays pilot 5lb claimer Ian Popham in a fair time. He can double up here in what looks another winnable contest though the tough six time flat winner Timocracy would prove a danger if translating that form to hurdles though his past efforts in this sphere have not been that inspiring.
