IRELAND'S EYE
Irish racing returns today with a mixed card at Clonmel kicking off at 4-40 while Salisbury, Epsom and Redcar provide the afternoon flat action in England. Later in the day it its off to Wolverhampton for an eight race all weather card finishing at 9-20. However Clonmel sees our best bets today and our vote goes to a bottom weight under a 7lb claimer in a competitive handicap for the in form Tony Mullins yard while we will be taking on the short priced favourite in the closing bumper.
Saver Chevy To The Levy (9-7/1) kept the ‘shirt on our backs’ yesterday when narrowly landing the novice chase at Hereford but it was a case of ‘seconditis’ on a couple of occasions also on the same card with Tignello (11/4-85/40) just getting edged out in a hc hurdle while saver The Fox’s Decree (7/4-5/4) was soundly beaten in the opening maiden hurdle. Additionally our run of winning naps came to a halt when One Of The Boys (4-7/2) could only finish a moderate third in a hc chase with saver Courella (15/2) one place in front of our main selection.
Paul Deegan is doubly represented in the 10f handicap at Clonmel this evening (5-40) but it is his unexposed Zinawar who can open his account at the seventh time of asking in this three year old event. A son of Halling the Pat Smullen ridden gelding has proved somewhat inconsistent in the main but nevertheless he has put in a couple of decent efforts in taking the second money in a Down Royal maiden over todays trip on just his second start on fast ground and subsequently stayed on to take a fair third over 9f at Ballinrobe in a slowish time on his second handicap when fitted with blinkers. Those aids were left off last time beaten some way in seventh on easy ground but with the return of blinkers and better ground here he can make the breakthrough where another unexposed sort in Leslie Youngs Hey Bosco who has been shaping well in his last two handicap starts looks the main danger. Pat Flynns Waydownsouth looks likely to head the market and must hold a leading chance also despite an 11lb rise for a last to first success in a Killarney handicap over 8 1/2f two weeks ago with the step up in trip looking likely to prove a plus.
Willie Mullins and 7lb claimer Eddie Linehan have combined to land two handicaps at Killarney and Wexford the last twice over a mile and a mile and a half in the last two weeks and they will be fancied to make it a hat trick in the 10f handicap at Clonmel this evening at 6-10. However the 4yo filly has gone up 12lbs for those victories and it can pay to side with the older The Last Stand representing the in form Tony Mullins yard. An eight year old the five time hurdle winner boasts a good record at this venue in the past having scored over CD over three years ago and also lost out by the minimum margin on two other occasions previously and though he has not filled the frame on any start this year he has run quite well over this trip on a couple of starts and off a mark of 50 and a 7lb claimer on board with ground to suit this often front running type can make the most of the 11lbs he gets from Phantasy Rock he can spring a mild surprise here with the improving The Black Abbot and the favourite looking the likely dangers.
Racing concludes at Clonmel this evening with the ‘obligatory’ bumper and with the ‘paper’ favourite Anderson Mcauley looking less than ‘bombproof’ the selection is the former pointer (maiden) Presenting Nama. Willie Mullins Anderson Mcauley has failed to justify favouritism on his last three starts but the 6yo failed to find that much when push came to shove at Kilbeggan last time when beaten by King’sandqueen’s at Kilbeggan and at the prices the son of Blueprint is passed over here. Though Presenting Nama could only finish a fair third on three starts ‘between the flags’ on mainly easier ground the John Hally trained 5yo seemed to appreciate better ground on his Park debut when only headed well inside the distance to Coronea Lilly in a Galway 2m 2f bumper five weeks ago. Pa King again claims 7lbs here and in what looks a modest contest he can go one better here.
5-10 CLONMEL – 1m 2f apprentice claimer
There are a few on a similar handicap mark here in what looks a relatively open contest for the grade but the vote has to go to David Marnanes consistent four time flat scorer MAAL who has won three of his four flat contests over this trip and Leigh Roches (claims valuable 4lbs) mount can break his three race sequence of seconds (last time over a mile and a half) here where All About Timing rates the danger with the return of cheekpieces.
5-30 SALISBURY – 1m 6f conditions Stakes
The Bin Suroor yard account for two of the runners here and though it is stating the obvious the call must be Frankie Dettori’s choice La De Two who steps up 2 furlongs in trip here having won well in a mile and a half handicap and the in form yard can collect another prize here.
