IRELAND'S EYE
All Ireland Hurling Final day usually means a quiet day in the Emerald Isle and it is left to Dundalk on the AW to provide the days racing action. On the other side of the channel there is just one meeting on the flat at York whilst Worcester and Fontwell are the ports of call for the National Hunt followers. We will spread our bets over three meets today in our quest for some value on the DAQ where a once raced colt can land a maiden on the polytrack at Dundalk and a former ex Irish older gelding can land a hc chase on his debut in this sphere at Fontwell.
Saver Cape Blanco (6/1) put up an excellent front running performance in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and in the process gave us our only winner on the day with our selection Rip Van Winkle (4/5-8/11) just getting up for second. However we did record a ‘near miss’ when saver Sindiyma (8/1) was short headed in a Leopardstown handicap while earlier in the day at the same fixture Spacious (3-11/4) had to give best narrowly to an Aidan O’Brien trained winner in a Group 1 with saver Music Show (5/2-2/1) back in third. In addition nap Rebel Dancer (4-7/2) took third prize in a Stratford hc hurdle while earlier on that card Rebel Hunter (5/2-13/8) finished a modest second in a novice chase.
Generally speaking it does not make punting sense in rowing in with an 11yo on his belated chasing debut but it could pay dividends to ‘buck the trend’ in this afternoons 2m 2f hc at Fonwell at 2-10 with the Evan Williams trained Blue Express. This son of Woodpas racked up a hat trick of handicap hurdles from todays trip up to 2m 4f over two years ago on mainly good and faster ground for Caroline Hutchinson and though yet to get off the mark for his current yard he has shown enough off his current mark (93) over hurdles on his last couple of starts on fast ground to indicate that he will prove competitive here under 3lb claimer Donie Fahy with Michael Blakes consistent ten year old Sir Bumble – a dual chase winner over two miles and six who was just touched off an identical mark to todays last time at Newton Abbot over a longer trip.
Paul Deegan and Pat Smullen looks to have good prospects of landing the 7f maiden at Dundalk today at 3-15 with the once raced Red Shaheen. This fellow started at odds of 50/1 on his debut in a decent Galway maiden over this trip at the Festival but the son of Zafeen ran well in finishing two lengths behind Robin Hood when taking fourth on slightly easier ground. That run should have sharpened up the 2yo and he can open his account here from admittedly a wide draw at the probable expense of likely ‘jolly’ Warning Flag who kept on well to go down narrowly in a mile Cork maiden despite swishing his tail in the closing stages.
Lawney Hill is enjoying a fine season and she can add to her seasonal tally by landing the Worcester feature this afternoon (4-40) – an extended 2m 4f hc chase with the former three time point winner Mad Jack Duncan. Lightly raced in bumpers and hurdles where showing just limited ability the change to the larger obstacles has seen steady progression from the 8yo and he has already bagged a novice and handicap from three attempts at 2m 5f and over two furlongs further last time at this track in just his second handicap. Though he was hit with a 9lb penalty for that comfortable win and drops back in trip here Aidan Colemans mount can continue in winning vein here where another in form yard in Nigel Twiston Davies looks to provide the main threat. Bermuda Pointe is well held by the selection on his seasonal debut at Uttoxeter but the Sam Twiston Davies (claims 3lbs) has since won fairly well if narrowly over 2m 1f at Newton Abbot and though he may not have the same progression as the Hill runner he could pose a danger nevertheless.
4-10 WORCESTER – 2m novice chase
Though BLACKTOFT was beaten in a 2 horse contest last time there was no disgrace in going under by over a length to the useful Cootehill and Evan Williams 7yo who scored on his only visit here in the past in a CD novice hurdle can return to winning ways here and give and he can give 7lbs away to Hi Tide who showed promise on his chase debut at Huntingdon.
5-55 DUNDALK – 2m handicap
An interesting contest with several National Hunt racers in the lien up and it is one of those JIGALO (a CD winner here in March off a 9lb lower mark and Joanna Morgans 9yo can beat The Buck and dual course winner Striking Force under Pat Smullen.
