DAQMAN - Saturday 4 September EVERY ONE’S A WINNER! Daqman went to town yesterday with a superb sequence of winning bets: two lays out of two, a one-horse gamble and Daq Multiples all showed a profit. Four winning bets in a row.
91% LAYS SEQUENCE WITH 10 OUT OF 11: Daqman made it 10 out of 11 (91%) in his latest sequence by landing a double of lays, one win (Winnie Dixie 3rd 11-4) and one place (Goodwood Starlight 7th of 8 at 9-1).
17-2 GAMBLE COMES OFF: He then landed his sole single bet of the day with the gambled-on Ottoman Empire (won 7-2 from 17-2).
DAQ MULTIPLES DOUBLE UP: His first Daq Multiples of the week pulled off a double through Social Rhythm (won 15-8) and Paphos (won 7-4).
36 POINTS PROFIT ON THE DAY: His 36 points profit on the day added to Thursday’s winning lay and 7-1 winner to bring his two-day total to 44 points.
It may be that the only man Aidan O’Brien has to beat today is himself. We usually weigh up a Champion Stakes between the best of the generations, and Ballydoyle’s whispering leprechaun has the best of both the older horses and the three-year-olds that line up at Leopardstown today, Rip Van Winkle and Cape Blanco.
He also has the stand-out in the Haydock Sprint, Starspangledbanner, and, with Godolphin’s top two-year-old, Signs In The Sand, lining up at Kempton, I feel some confident Daq Multiples coming on.
2.15 Kempton (Sirenia Stakes) This is a two-horse race (Hooray and The Paddyman) on official figures but the top rating has won only once in the four renewals since the 2006 changeover from turf to Polytrack, when it became the first juvenile Group race to be run in Britain on an artificial surface.
Mainly on home reputation and his Mill Reef entry, Signs In The Sand has taken over the market lead: as a first foal, the breeding is tenuous in assessing whether this turf winner on soft can make the switch to AW.
Fifth Commandment (nine runs) looks exposed but Reckless Reward has the requisite four to six runs which the stats say makes up a Sirenia winner, and has already scored two from two on Polytrack. As the
Norfolk winner from the front, he has to prove he gets this extra furlong but 10.0 on Betdaq gives you a back-and-lay bet at huge odds for the size of the field.
Hooray is a filly giving weight – her Lowther penalty - to the colts from a wide draw: her Cherry Hinton third has been let down by the winner, Memory, and her Lowther has been dimmed by Margot Did’s defeat at Salisbury.
The Paddyman needs to have found something at home during his absence since runner-up in the Richmond Stakes in July. Otherwise, Signs In The Sand is seen challenging Reckless Reward at the business end.
2.30 Haydock (Be Friendly Handicap) Since 2003, every winner had previously been first or second in a class-2 handicap. Test for that and you lose five of these.
On soft-ground preference, out goes Desert Phantom, while Golden Destiny and Archers Road are suffering from the same problem - high ratings because of excellent seasons in 2009 – and Anglezarke is best caught fresh.
With Pavershooz out because it’s so firm, Strike Up The Band should take them along and is a back-and-lay bet, offered at 11.0 this morning. Stablemate Courageous is the course whisper and the 8.0 is expected to go.
3.05 Haydock (Old Borough Cup) This is the first real test for Kansai Spirit, who only seven weeks ago was breaking his maiden. There was a transformation at Newbury last month – which marked him down for the Autumn Cup – when he came clear and could have won a proverbial street.
It’s the right time of year for Recession Proof and the game Lady Éclair won’t go down without a fight but this is a race crying out for an improver and, in Kansai Spirit, you’ve got one.
3.35 Haydock (Haydock Sprint Cup) The Choisir colt Starspangledbanner is back to 6f here, after disappointing over the minimum in the Nunthorpe, when Sole Power produced one of several shock results at the York meeting. Both last year’s winner and this year’s third in the Cheveley Park, Serious Attitude and Lady Of The Desert respectively, must be on the short list.
Lady Of The Desert (13.5 on Betdaq this morning) ran a terrific race to be fifth, within a length and a quarter of the promoted winner Special Duty, in the French 1,000 Guineas. Serious Attitude was hopelessly drawn on the wrong side in both Golden Jubilee and July Cup: trading 50.00 as I write.
Borderlescott was back to form at Goodwood but hasn’t won over 6f since the 2006 Stewards’ Cup on the same track. Kingsgate Native has yet to recapture his winning Group-1 form of 2007-8.
Prime Defender, deputising for Equiano, was less than three lengths off the Nunthorpe winner, and a little over four lengths behind in the Golden Jubilee, and has been well backed this week. But his stable is missing strike.
Though last year’s winner, Regal Parade, gamely took the Prix Maurice De Gheest a month ago, beating the French 1,000 Guineas third, Joanna, sprinters aged three and four have the best record in this and he would prefer some cut in the ground.
Jersey Stakes winner Rainfall would probably be more at home over 7f and 1m, and indeed has the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes at Ascot and Sun Chariot Stakes among future targets.
3.45 Leopardstown (Irish Champion Stakes) Sea Lord’s progress to win this would rank alongside the rise and rise of Harbinger. It’s unlikely that he can cope with this class but deserves his place against the Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco and the Ballydoyle hot-pot, stablemate Rip Van Winkle.
There’s only half a length between ‘Winkle’ and Twice Over on International form but it was hardly the mugging in the twinkle of an eye that they’re claiming, rather that Johnny Murtagh timed his run to perfection at York and now has both Sea Lord and Twice Over to set this one up for him, too.
With such a powerful pace, he is more likely to face a threat from his own camp, with Cape Blanco bringing his King George second to Harbinger as well as his Irish Derby victory to bear on the outcome.
The 8.0 on Betdaq is tremendous value to those shrewd punters who have the same idea about the shape of the race and note that Ladbrokes – in the know at Ballydoyle – go shortest of the bookies at only 5-1.
I’ve got to treat myself to that, as I would any ‘gift’ offers, but I’ll cover my retreat (I’ll accept that euphemism – Ed) in my Daq Multiples, embodying the full might of Ballydoyle in mixed bets.
