IRELAND'S EYE
It’s a big day in Ireland today with several Cheltenham aspirants on trial on an excellent card which houses four top class Grade 1’s while in England Fontwell and Musselburgh have some lesser quality jumps action but no less interesting for all that nevertheless. We will buck the trend and go with an outsider in the P J Moriarty novice chase while there could be plenty of value in siding with a winning pointer in the hunter chase on the Leopardstown card.
Due to a technical hitch yesterday our selections failed to appear.
Though our nap went down yesterday we did manage to register another double from 4 selections with former point winner Wayward Prince (10/11-4/5) coming home clear in the closing novice hurdle at Doncaster from our saver South Leinster (15/2-7) while we also landed our first hunter chase of the season when Robbers Glen (7/2-11/4) landed his fourth success in this sphere when scoring at Wetherby. In addition The Dew At Midnight (9/2) just went down narrowly in a handicap chase at Naas while saver I See A Star (6/1) filled third berth behind Robbers Glen.
The Grade 1 P J Moriarty novice chase at Leopardstown today at 2-40 invariably throws up a potentially decent sort and Willie Mullins has landed the last two runnings of this 2m 5f event with the useful mare J’y Vole and Cooline last year the Irish champion trainer can make it a hat trick here with Citizen Vic.
Though the 7yo looks the stable second choice as Ruby Walsh has opted for Cousin Vinny here the bumper and hurdle scorer put up a decent performance when making all to land a competitive Punchestown novice over 2m 4f eighteen days from Corskeagh Royale (looked winner on Wednesday at Down Royal till falling at second last) a race which has thrown up a subsequent winners in Presenting Massey and though this fellow does tend to go from the front he could spring a mild surprise under Paul Townend.
Dangers abound in plenty and the main danger could be Jessica Harringtons Roberto Goldback who has finally got his act together over fences and he followed up his defeat of Cousin Vinny at Navan over 2m 5f with an emphatic success over course and distance over a fortnight ago in a Grade 2 from another Mullins trained runner in Apt Approach. The 8yo accounted for another likely contender here in Weapon’s Amnesty (gave 2lbs) in a Grade 2 hurdle over this course and two miles and four and he in company with Zaarito look major contenders for the prize.
Former Irish trained pointer French Ties flattered to deceive before just failing to land back to back wins in staying handicap hurdles at Taunton five days ago and though the 9yo is clearly in form the combination of top weight and three runs in fairly quick succession over demanding trips could prove the undoing of Jennie Candish’s charge in the 3m 3f hc hurdle at Fontwell at 4-20. It could pay instead to side with the Leech trained runner My Skipper who shaped reasonably well on his first run for almost three months when finishing runner up in a Hereford 2m 4f hc hurdle over two months ago. The Paul Moloney ridden bumper and hurdle scorer at up to 2m 7f looks on a fair mark and the Old Vic gelding handles soft ground and he can land this contest at the expense of Montana Gold from the Tim Vaughan yard who could prove to be on a decent mark here.
3-00 MUSSELBURGH – 2m 4f novice chase
Nicky Henderson has a strong representation in this Class 3 novice and The Polomoche looks the most likely of his pair but he may have to play ‘second fiddle’ to the ex Irish pointer DOOR BOY who has made a bright start to his chasing career.
3-45 LEOPARDSTOWN – 3m Grade 1 Chase
Feature event of the day but not an easy one to solve with reservations about most of the runners but we will side with Nicky Richards useful grey MONEY TRIX who can land a big Irish prize here at the expense of obvious danger Cooldine who is take to show his true running here.
4-20 LEOPARDSTOWN – 3m hunter chase
AGUS A VIC lays claim to be the top rated Irish hunter chaser and Pat Martins 9yo could prove hard to beat here in his quest to land the three timer in this contest and he can dismiss the rejuvenated ex Pipe inmate Kilty Storm and Denis Hickeys Ballistraw.
