Two of my regular lays are running at Exeter and Down Royal today and – unaccountably – each is vying for the favourite’s spot. The one at Exeter is Ours, which is probably not the possessive but the word for ‘bear’ (he’s French-bred); he certainly runs like one. Ours (3.40) has been third or fourth in five of his last six races, usually showing the one pace, and invariably blundering away his chances. It’s going to be a right slog round Exeter today for him with top weight on heavy. 1.10 Lingfield (Bet CIS Cup Football – Betdaq Selling Stakes): Lingfield defies a simple answer: on Friday, two rear runners and two front-runners won adjacent races; then, on Saturday, all winners were ‘chased leaders.’ Ah well, a simple answer would mean we’d all want to back the same horse and then there’d be no value. As it is, opinion prevails, and opinion makes the market. Of course, the shape of the race often depends on the pace and my own opinion on this seller started with a question: why is Espy paper favourite when he hasn’t won for not far off two years, and never over this trip? Another lay. What they’re going on is his narrow second at Wolver in December, and he stayed 7f fairly well last time, though out of the frame at Kempton. But he has to come off a likely fast pace here and has a lot on to beat Obe Gold (two out of four on the course) and Equinity, who is holding his form well and stays on the same mark as his win last time. With Obe Gold the bet on Wolver form last month, the pair easily hold Titus Gent (front runner) and Spring Bridge, though Peopleton Brook is also likely to be waited with and get involved in the finish. 2.15 Lingfield (Bet Multiples – Betdaq Handicap): Mick Easterby has a near-50% record on this track (9 out of 20), and Nacho Libre is back to his optimum trip after trying further at Wolver, when easy to back. He’d been favourite when winning at Kempton but there are problems to be overcome today: his jockey reported that he ran flat at Wolver and, 9lb higher than the Kempton winning mark, he’s claimed off now. He’s been placed, but never won, under an apprentice and he’s never raced at Lingfield before. Nacho Libre’s natural tendency to be in front, or near the front, could be thwarted by the presence of at least three more known pacesetters who could get into a ‘war’ with him. He got stuffed in similar circumstances by come-from-behind Sarahs Art when the pair met at Wolver. Rondeau (Jim Crowley) has shown that he needs this extra furlong these days and the hot pace offsets the difficulties of settling behind the leaders from the one stall. They are taking up the offers about Striker Torres this morning but he’s another newcomer to Lingfield and a hat-trick at this low level is a big ‘ask.’ 2.50 Lingfield (betdaq.co.uk Handicap): Stall 5 goes for a hat-trick in this, with Totally Focused, the yard’s last winner three weeks ago, plugging on for Simon Dow while most of the string is out of form. He’s got Sunshine Always breathing down his neck on revised weights for their Kempton one-two. For all we revere Jim Crowley, he left it late that day, giving Sunshine Always too much to do; it was a similar story with his chance in today’s previous race, Rondeau, when well backed last time out (beaten favourite, not reach winner). Come on, Jim, I’ll back you in both races, hoping you can get at least one of them right this time. In this one, I’ll dutch Sunshine Always with Istiqdaam, staking to win around 15 points, whichever one wins. Istiqdaam, for that man Easterby, was the one for money early doors with the bookies this morning, and was best on Betdaq at 8.6 at the time of writing. Istiqdaam came out the ‘moral’ when giving weight to Hereford Boy and Prince Of Thebes at Kempton, being beaten little more than a length, well backed as today. They’re claiming off Istiqdaam, so he’s well in on the weights turnaround, and the race potentially has a similar shape with Prince Of Thebes – made all here from stall 1 last month – drawn in 2, and likely to tow the penalized Hereford Boy (stall 3).

We are now recording the daily profit and loss of DAQMAN to help readers gauge the current form of the service. We will provide the profit / loss on the previous day to a £1 level stake on each selection (eg: a 5 point bet = a £5 stake). In the interests of consistency the profit / loss will be recorded at SP prices, however BETDAQ users can reasonably expect to beat SP in the majority of races. | |
