Sunday 31 January DAQMAN  DOUBLE OF LAYS UP: Daqman landed two out of two lays at Cheltenham yesterday when he opposed Doctor Pat (unplaced 5-2) and Madison Du Berlais (unplaced 3-1). There’s another one today. BETDAQ-SPONSORED KEMPTON CARD: Today Daqman concentrates on the six Betdaq-sponsored races at Kempton, finding some big-odds back-and-lay bets this morning. With all races bar the last slow by 30 seconds and more, and starting prices at 100-1, 16-1 and 14-1, I’m inclined not to trust yesterday’s Cheltenham results for festival purposes. What winners in March that we haven’t seen already must present themselves for inspection in the next three weeks, and there will be many a novice short of match practice because of the bad weather. That’s why Ms Knight is being a wise old Hen scratching out a race for Somersby (3.05) at Hereford today. Somersby should win at unbackable odds – famous last words – so I’ll concentrate on the Kempton Betdaq card: 2.25 Kempton (Bet Multiples – Betdaq Auction Maiden): The usual Kempton problem of the wide draws having to tuck in is hardly needed in our calculations in small fields today; until the last that is. All bar Dominium in the opener have experience, but his stable currently has a 50% win-and-place strike-rate, he’s a US-bred dirt colt against modest opposition, and the jockey, Luke Morris, shows a profit of 85 points at the track to a one-point level stake. However, The Strig has improved with every race and Blue Zephyr wasn’t given a hard time on his recent return from injury. 2.55 Kempton (Betdaq Poker Handicap): Betdaq backers reckon there are three picture cards here; the rest can be stacked, despite John Jenkins (Papageno) good form. Texas Queen took a long time to hit the mark and will have to improve on her Wolver maiden win to hold ‘em here. Boogie Waltzer is on a hat-trick mission, with William Carson’s claim negating the rise in rating. But, though I don’t usually follow the bridesmaid – second the last twice, missing out on the big bouquet – R Woody has done enough for me: he has the form round here, beaten little more than two lengths, trying to give 12lb to the prolific Wanchai Whisper – would have received only a pound today had he run -  and he was pipped in the last stride at Lingfield last time out. 3.25 Kempton (Try Betdaq For An Exchange Claimer): Six times a distance winner, Stonecrabstomorrow is effective at this level but Divinsky is six times a course winner. But that’s not the biggest difference between the two: Divinsky’s recent runs have been in handicaps at higher grades and this represents a drop in class. Misaro has also won here but tends to race too freely, while Irish Music is one of those bridesmaids and looks a bit short at 4.0, as I write. Divinsky ran well here on Thursday and I reckon he’s piping hot and can make most of the running today. 3.55 Kempton (betdaq.co.uk. Stakes): This is class 2, and a pity there are so few runners: the front three in the market have all won at this level but, strangely, most of the winning form in each case is over 7f. The tactical answer when a horse has shown stamina over further is to set him alight and play catch me; but it’s anybody’s guess which of the three will try that. One thing you would say on all known form: it won’t be Aeroplane. Yet, though there is no known pace on for this renowned hold-up horse, he is favourite, as I write. Lay. Punters who go only on what they read will answer that Elna Bright was a long way behind Aeroplane here in December and a long way in front of Fathsta at Lingfield 17 days ago, suggesting that Aeroplane has an easy landing in the winner’s enclosure today. But over the six, and with Jim Crowley in the saddle, I would fancy Fathsta, a dual course-and-distance scorer, to race in the van and make his ability to find a bit of speed count against the bridle horse Aeroplane and the 7f-1m horse, Elna Bright. 4.25 Kempton (betdaq.co.uk. Handicap): David Elsworth scored a one-two in a maiden here on Thursday, the day after Mark Johnston slammed in a treble, and Willie Jarvis has hit four winners in a row to make it six from nine so far for the first month of 2010. Hot or what! Cuthbert (3.8 as I write) has made all twice over this trip in little more than three weeks and, as a Johnston horse which has led at some stage of two of his three maidens, Egyptology (5.3) joins him as potential back-and-lays. Highland Quaich and Khanivorous need to step up on their maiden wins but both those were here at Kempton. Blue Lyric and Cuthbert are the only scorers a grade higher, in class 4; again, if course form means anything, Blue Lyric catches that pacemaker. 4.55 Kempton (Bet In Running – Betdaq Apprentice Handicap): Toby Atkinson had the wrong instructions on Erinjay’s debut but the trainer got it right – and so did Toby – when tucking him in behind the leaders and pressing the button a furlong out over CD six weeks ago. It’s a bit of a worry that we haven’t seen him since, but his sire, Bachelor Duke, didn’t have much racing. Very Well Red looks the obvious back-and-lay at 12.5; he led in the final two furlongs, well away despite a wide draw, over CD earlier in the month, and seems almost certain to ‘go for it’ from the rail stall (13) today, offers surely shortening considerably in running. Batchworth Blaise still seems high in the handicap, though Eric Wheeler had a winner the other day and, while Prince Rossi goes well fresh, he could have been better drawn for one who likes to make the running. But Billy Cray will know he has to get him across and, if he does, the 23.0 will be the back-and-lay of the month so far; you must have a nibble early on and hold on to the hungry mouse for a killing if he’s still in front at the business end. Aflaam and Ocean Legend were successful last time out but, at this level, it’s hard to find horses with the physical constitution and mental aptitude to put back-to-back wins together. Alqaahir is the one coming back to peak, and he has a good draw.
