Saturday 30 January DAQMAN  DOUBLE BANKER DAY: Daqman has two maximum-stakes bets, one each way, on the Cheltenham card which, despite early pessimism, survives with Doncaster the loser to the weather. DOUBLE LAYS DAY: It’s also a day for a double of lays, as Daqman attempts a pair of Double Whammys, where he lays a favourite and backs the winner. It’s a tough day’s racing but, hold a pistolet to my head, and I’ll be buying money in the opener at Cheltenham and watching the rest. However, I think Bouggler is a huge price to place later on, in front or behind Lie Forrit and Time For Rupert. 12.55 Cheltenham: An expensive purchase for the Paul Nicholls winner-factory, having won last time for Nick Williams, Pistolet Noir is a smart prospect who should reveal his Triumph Hurdle potential here. 1.30 Cheltenham: Five Dream has twice been beaten by Pigeon Island, who himself was seen off by Seven is My Number, but is better off at the weights in this. The form of Doctor Pat’s Newbury win has been let down and the hard race that day could have left it’s mark. Plein Pouvoir has hit form at the right time to continue Venetia Williams’ domination of this event  (three wins and a second in five runnings). 2.05 Cheltenham: Seven is My Number is switched to this from abandoned ‘Donny’ whereas this is the ‘proper target’ for Perce Rock, although Tony McCoy fears he has too much weight. At 5.5 the win, my hungry mouse leapt on a superb 2.2 the place Seven Is My Number on Betdaq this morning: can I really get my money back if he is only placed? 2.35 Cheltenham: Novices (Inchidaly Rock) don’t win this, not with Carruthers around anyway: he’s five out of six in small fields. Compare with Madison Du Berlais’s track record of just two thirds from six Cheltenham starts, and you have the makings of a double whammy. 3.10 Cheltenham: Royal Charm is more than useful and Fiulin is an interesting prospect but hurdles-king Henderson seemingly has another one here. General Miller has already shown that he likes the track, which is half the battle at Cheltenham; the other half of the battle is warrior supreme, Tony McCoy. But McCoy reports in his Telegraph column that ‘General Miller is not a natural jumper, however, and that is his biggest downside.’ Back and play: with the worry-beads. 3.40 Cheltenham: Fair Along is back in fine form at home and loves Cheltenham. Lough Derg looks more hard work for McCoy. But is there a Big Buck’s in the field? If anything is to emulate last year’s winner, it must be young and progressive: Lie Forrit has done no wrong – apart from Aintree – but Mr Thriller and Time For Rupert have both improved since his interrupted sequence. Both are held by Katchit if that one gets today’s trip and that’s got to be the clincher in having a bet: the distance. You can only be sure of Time For Rupert (holds Kayf Aramis) and Lie Forrit, though word has it that Bouggler (19.0) will step up all right.
