Wednesday 2 December I Dunguib has put new professional Brian O’Connell on the jockeys’ map and no flaws there: he’s handled the Presenting gelding like a pro. 1.20 Fairyhouse (the Drinmore): When they’re all in a heap, look for something else: that’s what I was told when I first started betting, and you certainly have that problem here with only a couple of pounds between Mr Warbucks and Whatuthink on Thurles form and the same between Whatuthink and Alpha Ridge on Gowran running. On form, I can’t have front-runner Pesoto over this trip, and there’s nothing in the breeding to give me any encouragement for the paper favourite. Lay. Though I was carried away by Jessica Harrington’s enthusiasm before his defeat at Navan, I can’t – gun to my head – seriously support Roberta Goldback against Noel Meade’s ‘army’. His ‘army’ is just the two – Jered and Pandorama – but they are tank and artillery: both are winners on heavy ground over the trip and both were Grade-1 hurdle winners. That’s where the similarity ends, since the one – Pandorama – likes to go with the pace, and t’other, Jered, is a hold-up horse. What more do you want? It was Noel Meade who upset the applecart when Go Native turned over Binocular and Solwhit in the Fighting Fifth, and he seems to have too much firepower for this Drinmore field. 1.50 Fairyhouse (the Hatton’s Grace): The last great winner of the Royal Bond was Hardy Eustace, and here he is, appropriately, in the Hattons Grace today. ’Hardy’ has won two Cheltenham Champion Hurdles – Hattons Grace won three in a row – and, with the news of Harchibald’s retirement, he’s a last reminder of some great Irish hurdlers of recent years. That man Meade has the 2007 winner of this, Aitmatov, in form again but he was only fourth to Catch Me – Hardy Eustace third – last year, and Oscar Dan Dan looks a more likely threat to Edward O’Grady’s favourite; he might have stopped Aitmatov’s win back, but for falling when challenging at Navan. Both Catch Me and ‘Oscar’, then, have recent falls to overcome but, at their age, they are mentally sound and I can’t see it affecting them. OTHER MEETINGS: The Howard-Johnson team is red hot right now and one of theirs we’ve all been waiting for is Fortysecond Street (2.45), by Flemensfirth out of an Old Vic mare. He’s schooled exceptionally well at home for this beginners’ chase and, with any lucky, won’t have to face a bog, with the going currently good to soft. Place bet of the day is Cecily (8.50 Kempton) at 8.2 the win on Betdaq this morning; only once out of the first four in 10 outings; you could earn 17.5 for every 10 a place, at the time of writing. Cecily was given too much to do last time out, is expected to be better suited by today’s 6f, and is working smartly at home. | |
