DAQMAN on Tuesday

Tuesday 1 December DAQMAN  NOW IT’S 28 WINS IN FOUR DAYS: Daqman is on a roll, heading for his fastest century of winning bets after nine more yesterday. SIX DOUBLES UP: He landed six doubles out of six yesterday – but didn’t add the four trebles and the accumulator – bringing his total declared Daq Multiples score to 12 (five trebles and seven doubles) since Friday. TWO NAPS OUT OF TWO: His nap won for the second day running, and his profit in the four days is around 60 points.   400 LAYS TODAY: Today’s two lays takes Daqman to 400 since the column began, with 309 so far successful, currently four in a row. I haven’t been on a century hunt like this since last year, when I concentrated on winning as many bets as possible and three times managed to grab a ‘ton’ within 30 days: I’m now on course for one in little more than a fortnight; in fact, around 14.3 days at the current rate, give or take five minutes. I’ve done many other betting exercises this year: a couple of weeks ago, it was in back-and-lay (there are a couple of good ones today), and I’ve just done one on place betting: well, I kept on getting big-odds horses into places, so turned my attention to it. Result: in four declared place bets since, we’ve had two in the frame at 8-1 and one at 10-1 for a level-stakes profit. I set up my win-50 jackpots when the timing wasn’t right: but Coe (2nd 8-1) came very close on Saturday, and I shall wait for an opportune moment before another one. You and I have got to use all these Betdaq possibilities as if selecting the right weapon from our arsenal at the right time. It’s the same with my lays: I try not to force them, even when I’m on a run. You have to have very specific reasons for opposing a favourite. Betting all depends on what material you’ve got, and how you handle it; exploit the ‘play’ that’s winning for you at the time but be quick to change when it’s not bringing a return. What is galling for me is that any value seldom shows up in the results. If my form studies and my information are right, the horses I tip in the morning are going to be well backed: so I have to suffer the indignity of seeing naps registered against me as 4-6 winners (Comhla Ri Coig and Working Title at the weekend), while at the same time laughing little apples at the odds against (the value) I got – and I hope you did, too – in morning Betdaq exchanges. I haven’t exploited the bounce factor for a single one of my 398 lays, so I hope today’s deviation doesn’t stop the run. Ray Mond (12.40) ran away with his rider on a sound surface at Warwick after two years’ absence. He had a hard race that day and will surely remember it this afternoon in the bog that will be Hereford. The worry is that his new trainer, Sean Curran, has made a big difference to this animal, but his choice of jockey doesn’t say so. It says: ‘Ray Mond is up 7lb and we need to negate every ounce of that with a 7lb claimer.’ The claimer of choice, young Freeman has had only six NH rides since he switched to jumps a fortnight ago, and he’s been mostly on 33-1 and 100-1 shots. But he’s taken his two chances for Curran really well, winning on Prince Pippin at Folkestone and then third on the same animal at Newbury. It’s an interesting situation, for which I will declare a half-stakes lay. But you are in the handy position of taking an early price (he’s easy to back at around 3-1) and watching Ray Mond hare off in front. If he repeats his running style, he’ll stay there until you’ve had time to lay off at considerably reduced odds. Back-and-lay beauty. Recif De Thaix (2.10) must go in my Daq Multiples: he blew up badly on his return but has come on leaps and bounds for the run and did a fine piece of homework with Fistral Beach, whose effort at Newbury suggested the ‘form’ is good. Watch your trigger-finger: similarly named ‘Procas’ is not my cup of ‘Thaix.’ We were right to follow the Greatrex yard yesterday and there are good each-way offers about Smooth Classic (3.40), runner-up to Tataniano in an Irish point. The Nicholls favourite, Elevenses, is a slow-maturing type, who’s really at the front of the market because of the stable he comes from, and is easy to back this morning. So the danger to the Greatrex progress may be Another Kate, with form that’s been franked. I’ll have my second half-stakes lay on Elevenses. That will bring my total number of lays to 400. I needed another runner in the beginners’ chase at Southwell: I like to include strong novices in my multiples and bet against them at big each-way offers in fields of eight or nine. With only seven starters, Mobaasher (12.50) carries all my hopes: being told that he’s ‘schooled exceptionally’ helps. You could try a battle of wits with the layers in the 1.20: it’s a fascinating contest. Chamirey was forecast at odds on in the Racing Post but there was no way backers would bite on tight offers this morning, since ‘Kingy’ has managed only five wins from his last 50 starters, with no fewer than 15 placed. Missing strike or what! The race is a live one for you because Tony McCoy is on a front-runner, Lord Generous: the partnership made all and won by 11 lengths and 38 lengths at Warwick. You can get a ‘Generous’ 3.0 plus this morning and lay the odds when McCoy boots clear. Unless she steps up, Alora Money looks a bit outclassed despite her name - which roughly translates as ‘now for some cash’ – but she does stay. King fans will tell you that Chamirey has had experience in France and that the trainer’s had three winners from four runners in novice hurdles at Southwell in the last five seasons, so will be hoping his fortunes are at a turning point here. There’s another King contender, the staying type Saltagioo, at the front of the market for the maiden hurdle, in which Kinsya (1.50) has schooled really well. Saltagioo is a multiple Flat winner and can belie the stable form but Kinsya looked a bit of value at 8.4 this morning: Mark Tompkins yard has had three placed from the last four runners and won with its only Southwell starter in recent years. Owen Glendower (3.20) is very useful, making all the right impressions at home, and getting 7lb from the penalized Oliver Sherwood winner, Double Expresso. At Lingfield, New Christmas (1.30) – 5.5 on the Daq, as I write - has come on ‘massively’ for his last run, according to my work-watcher, and will enjoy the step up to a mile. I’ve got myself a solid each-way in a nine-runner race after all.
