Thursday 3 December DAQMAN  FOUR WINS FROM THREE IRISH RACES: It sounds a bit of Irish but Daqman had four ‘winners’ in three races running at Fairyhouse yesterday, including landing his seventh lay on the trot. DOUBLE WHAMMY: It happened like this: in the Drinmore Novice Chase, he hit a double whammy, laying the losing paper favourite, Pesoto (pulled up 5-1), and backing the winner, Pandorama (won 9-4), which was available at 5.2 in early trading.    11-2 WINNER: Then Oscar Dan Dan (won 11-2) was one of his two bets in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. He had earlier put Dunguib at the hub of his Daq Multiples but only Alegralil went on to complete a double.    37 WINS IN SIX DAYS: It brought his doubles and trebles score to 14 as his run reached 37 winning bets in six days. Gremlins damaged my column yesterday and some of my usual race-analysis was ‘lost in translation’, including my position on Dunguib: he is going to sail through easy preps but is too short for a six-year-old to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. If you got in early at a price, sit tight and lay off on Betdaq nearer the time. Younger horses will come along. Dunguib is, by the trainer’s own admission, a ‘delicate’ beast: Champion Hurdle talk is the usual Press hype about easy-peazy novice winners. A horse has to be a ‘man’ at Cheltenham: that has yet to be proved in Dunguib’s case. Wincanton will find out the men from the boys today: ‘delicate’ wins nothing on heavy ground with some trappy fences, particularly on that descent to the run-in. You need a tough old bird or a young upstart with ‘no weight’ to stop him, like Master Overseer in the Silver Buck Chase (1.45). He’s got bags of stamina as a four-mile heavy-ground point winner and is 10lb well in despite his penalty. The danger is Terrible Tenant if they let him get away from them; trying to make up ground on a leader when you’re jumping out of sticky mud over trappy fences can hand it to a front-runner. This one has won his races on a sound surface but can act on soft, likes Wincanton and is the ‘wrong’ price, trading 12.0 on the Daq as I write. What you want in the testing conditions today is an Irish point winner: take a bow, Aux Le Bahnn (2.45), who goes well fresh and could have too much guts for Bakbenscher, a poor jumper from a stable out of form - only four wins from the last 50 starters – and Vodka Brook, who is not fluent over hurdles never mind fences! Those familiar with this column know that I take a gamble when I’m on a roll. My reader doesn’t like it if I build up a sequence without taking risks, and we may as well spend the money. So here goes: I’m laying both Bakbenscher, as paper favourite, and Vodka Brook, as new favourite on the Daq, as I write. The chips are down and I’m moving all in on Aux Le Bahnn. Market Rasen is almost a mirror image of Wincanton; the same tight turns and uphill one side; and, though the fences are easier, the run to the line is not. There may not be downhill fences to deal with, it’s flat enough, but the winning-post never seems to come. As a Saddlers Hall, out of a Roselier mare, Bay Cherry (2.25) should have no fears; he’s bred to go round again. Bay Cherry loves the mud, has already seen off Fabalu: ‘beaten run-in’ from that one’s last-race analysis is the writing on the wall on this track. His trainer, Don McCain, could have better luck in the opener but it’s an interesting one: his Al Qeddaaf (12.55), who has schooled exceptionally well, takes on the penalised local Louth horse, Sergeant Pink, but that one has to give a stone to the other main contender, Gwyre. What with it being Al Qeddaaf’s debut, and Sergeant Pink’s giving all that weight, I think that puts Gwyre in the driving seat and I was boggled to see that I could get 6.6 this morning, with a 2.73 saver on Al Qeddaaf. What makes it worth dabbling with the value is that – on all known form – they are all hold-up horses, with the possible exception of Sergeant Pink, sometimes a van runner on the Flat. If they force him to set the pace, the penalty could wipe him out of this. I haven’t been to Leicester lately but I remember you had time to buy your hot dog as they disappeared down the far-side hollow and before they came back into view and, if you’ve ever struggled round the Leicester ring road, you’ll be feeling mighty comfortable, sitting by your PC. I shall be on Cloud Nine (3.05), in fact; here’s another Saddlers Hall, stepped up to a stamina trip, and with his future before him – I love the tautology – as a half brother to The Listener. At Wolverhampton, Sixties Rock (5.45) is a tasty 11.5 on Betdaq, as I write. Has been straightened out by, and is working well for, master horseman, Jeremy Glover. Eddie Ahern booked for first handicap. Class act of the night is Prohibition (6.15), working well and with his problems sorted: Jamie Spencer’s only mount.
