Sunday 6 December DAQMAN  52 WINNING BETS IN 9 DAYS: Daqman named both Sandown Saturday big-race winners, Somersby (won 7-2) and Twist Magic (won 9-4), as he landed six more winning bets to take his total to 52 in nine days. 12 LAYS UP OUT OF 14: He opposed Overstrand (unplaced 5-2 favourite), his 12th successful lay out of 13, but then suffered a blow to the day’s profits when a second lay, Cross Kennon, won eased out to 5-1. ‘I staked for a lay at around 9-4 so that SP hit the account,’ says Daqman. 16-1 AND 12-1 PLACES: The losing lay was harder to bear, as he tipped the runner-up, King Of Castile (2nd 16-1), and also had Silk Affair (3rd 12-1). Daqman’s form figures for individual bets on Friday and Saturday were: 10111001132211120020, counting in the lays. Don’t Push It, A.P.! Tony McCoy, writing in his Daily Telegraph column, declares: “The ground is fine and many of the opposition are old and exposed.” He’s referring to the feature chase at Warwick, which is somewhat overshadowed by better betting contests at Kelso and Punchestown today but is intriguing nevertheless. I fancy Our Vic (1.40) to ‘do a Twist Magic’ and run them into the ground, on the ground. He only just weakened out of it behind Tranquil Sea at Cheltenham. I can see My Will and Miko De Beauchene getting too far behind: in fact, all the opposition are hold-up, rear runners, and Don’t Push It – like Our Vic, a son of Old Vic – will have to find something special, with A.P. digging deep. That’s my ‘visual’, how I see the shape of the race, and that’s the only way to bet. But they’re trappy cards everywhere and my five-wins-a-day average is surely in danger: I’ll give it five races, though, and hope the ‘visuals’ haven’t been impaired by the champagne of the last few days. 2.05 Punchestown (John Durkan Memorial):  Aran Concerto goes particularly well fresh: Barker got close to him at Fairyhouse in the Spring but that was on good ground and, on heavy over 20 furlongs, ‘Concerto’ should come out on top. In Compliance, winner of this two years ago, used to hold his form well but has had his problems and may ‘bounce’, with his recent win his first run for more than a year. All three of them have to face improvers in J’y Vole and Joncol. In favour of J’y Vole is his price – he’s not the rank outsider that the betting suggests – with Joncol firm favourite this morning. On the other hand, J’y Vole now has it to prove, with his best CV entry defeat of the disappointing Big Zeb, whereas Joncol confirmed his ability with a good run back, second to Tranquil Sea, over an inadequate trip: he gets even further than today’s journey. You takes your choice: plenty of built-in risk in J’y Vole’s price but plenty of confirmed ability in Joncol’s reappearance. 2.20 Kelso (Scottish Borders National):  Last year’s winner, Rambling Minster, went to Sandown yesterday (pulled up) instead of bidding for a repeat; he would have had to give 13lb from top-weight here. Instead, the Reveleys rely on Bold Ransom, who hasn’t been out of the first four for nearly two years; he’s always looked a dour stayer and, being by a Roselier mare, this 4m is probably right up his street. But he’s also been left high in the handicap, alongside Morgan Be, another who’s finished in the first four in every race during 2008 and 2009, and was second in the Eider Chase marathon. The handicapper clearly knows this pair well. Jaunty Journey, a Welsh National entry, as is half-sister Jaunty Flight, comes from a yard renowned for stayers and whose runners are raising their game for the big occasion right now. L’Aventure is a former Welsh National winner and more rain would bring in Becher Chase third, Royal Rosa. Though Lucky Nellerie is a proven stayer, Graham Lee partners stablemate Poker De Sivola, but he’s never won beyond 20 furlongs and two-mile specialist Justwhateverulike is hard to fancy for the same reason. Lee probably opts for ‘Poker’, since Lucky Nellerie likes to make the running; he looks the bet and lay of the race, but I can’t see him lasting out on the ground. I’m a great fan of the Smiths and Garleton could improve for the trip but the blot on the handicap is surely Royal Mackintosh; even if they have improved, his 13lb pull with Bold Ransom and 12lb with Morgan Be are eyecatching and, as a heavy-ground horse, and a grandson of Oats, he should come into this in the closing stages.
