DAQMAN on Tuesday

Tuesday 10 November DAQMAN  THREE OUT OF FIVE:  Daqman had winnings to come from three of the five races he bet in yesterday, including two of the three Betdaq-sponsored races. NOT QUITE DEI’S DAY: His winners were Spinning (won 2-1) and Gramercy (won 6-4), and Opus Dei (2nd 12-1) just got pipped at Wolverhampton. BIG-RACE WARNING: Daqman today has a big-race warning for Saturday, win-and-place bets at 26.0 and 13.5 this afternoon and a back-and-lay at 41.0. There’s also a nap and a lay. Is it my age, or are policemen (and horses) getting younger? In the novices handicap chase at Lingfield today, half the runners are aged four or five; in the handicap chase, more than half are five and six yet have run a total of 42 steeplechases, one of them having jumped fences since he was just turned four. And I warn you now, as the market hots up for Saturday’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, the change there is marked: in the four results up to Cyfor Malta’s year (2002), two winners were aged nine and one eight; since then every one of the six successful have been aged six or seven. The five market leaders for Saturday’s race correspond to that trend, with Chapoturgeon on top actually only five years old. Whereas, a few years ago, we’d say sagely ‘too young’, we are now making him favourite. Jockeys in nappies next? On that note, before we get down to business, congratulations to champion apprentice Freddie Tylicki on his new post with Paul Dixon as stable jockey to master trainer Jeremy Glover (anyone know what he’s riding in next year’s Cambridgeshire?) Today’s gem is Copper Bleu. Yes, I know he’s won races already but today is the big one: his chasing debut for David Pipe at Exeter (3.10). Copper Bleu seemingly hasn’t been rushed into the bigger obstacles but, in fact, has already won a point, a bumper and two hurdles, and knows his way over the sticks at Aintree and Cheltenham. I think we’ll see him there again in bigger roles. Paul Nicholls provides a threat with Take The Breeze, who has been jumping well, and the rain today will be welcome; he missed taking on Emma Lavelle’s Crack Away Jack at Sandown on Saturday, waiting on softer ground. I put Captain Americo up for a race Nicholls won at Worcester last  month with Pride Of Dulcote but that one would be way above Take The Breeze in the Ditcheat pecking order. Winning at Sandown in Saturday, in an open handicap chase, though still only six, was Any Currency who split Pride Of Dulcote and Captain Americo in that Worcester heat. So it was surprising, at first glance, to see Andy Turnell’s Captain Americo trading 10.0 on Betdaq this morning but today’s race is a big drop back in trip and seems to be a sharpener with the future in mind so, with what we know of the two main dangers, no wonder Copper Bleu is being offered so short. In the absence of McCoy (he’s at Lingfield; so now you know), and because he’s easy to back at 13.0, I’m leaving out County Hurdle runner-up Stradbrook but it’s quite a field, isn’t it? I’ll be taking one or two out of this for the future (and trying to suss out the Turnell plot), and I think Copper Bleu will be among them: he’s schooled really well and is ‘expected’ on all the evidence. The names of Findlay and Barber which have helped set Ditcheat alight in recent years launch some novice-chase firepower together with Inchidaly Rock (2.40), who goes well fresh and could be a big improver now he goes chasing, not least because he’s had the breathing op that so often boosts the form of a Nicholls’ nearly-horse. Inchidaly Rock won his opening novice hurdle on this card last year and the novice chase was won by Nicholls with Nevada Royale. It’s a short price the double comes up again. On the face of it, I wouldn’t read too much into Sir Bathwick running in a Bathwick Tyres staying hurdle (2.10) - trainer Pipe warns that his target is veterans’ races in the New Year – but I still think he holds several clues to the race. Clyffe Hanger, High Carol and The Great Alfie have decent enough recent form but Sir Bathwick helps keep the weight down for stablemate Prince Geeno, a youngster reckoned by his trainer to be very well in for his handicap debut. I can see this pair destroying the field in the mud: Sir Bathwick is a natural front-runner, and Prince Geeno’s light weight must be put to good use. I chose to back (and lay in running) Sir Bathwick at a huge 41.0, and have a strong each-way bet on Prince Geeno. As I write, you can get 87% place insurance on your win stake. I’m laying Fighting Chance (3.40), who’s nine now and has yet to win anything outside the point-to-point field, and that was yonks ago; the rain has gone against his chances (twice placed on good ground). There’s a whisper for Hen Knight’s unexposed Red Rattle, and I also have Buailteoir running for me from an in-form yard, whereas the paper favourite’s stable hasn’t had a winner for 142 days. My ‘gem’ for yesterday, War Footing, missed Southwell because of the firm ground and switches back to hurdling (3.30 Lingfield); it was his chasing career I was looking forward to. Sedgefield has a decent race, a class-3 handicap hurdle (2.20): both runnings of the race so far have gone to lightweights; Tension Point last year carried 10st 4lb and the initial winner had even less. Brackenmoss (11.5 on the Daq as I write) goes well fresh and Strobe (26.0), fit after two runs back, is likely to play catch-me on the rain-softened ground; he’s the one with the featherweight.
