I’m told that Moghaayer, by Sinndar, is the classy one. But I’m going mainly to the Midlands where, at Southwell and Wolverhampton, Betdaq provides much of the racing as well as the value betting. 12.20 Southwell (Bet Grand Slam Darts – Betdaq Handicap Div 1): All bar three of the stables represented here are out of form, having saddled 75 runners in total without a winner in the last fortnight. That includes Mocha Java’s yard: he’s taken over as favourite on the strength of two wins from three runs here and could force, or help to force, the pace so would probably become shorter in running than the 6.0 offers I saw. Stables in form send out Castano, Kinigi and Rockfield Lodge. Kinigi, a course winner three times, is with one of the leading Fibresand yards. 12.50 Southwell (Bet Grand Slam Darts – Betdaq Handicap Div 2): Tri Chara would normally take them along but has a low draw, and I’m having a bet and lay on Naomh Geileis (9.2 as I write): Johnston’s horses often attempt to outrun the pack, and this one is trying to find her trip, dropped back in distance after taking too keen a hold over further. Hypnotic did the ‘scalded cat’ act last time out but that was probably because he was fired up by first-time blinkers, which are left off today. Charlie Delta (Kinigi’s stable) has been placed five times from six runs here – one win – and his last-time success has been boosted by the runner-up; he’s held his form well in the past. Straight Face won a claimer on his latest start so gets no penalty for this handicap; he’s done that trick before; he’s a Southwell winner, and he’s a 7f specialist (seven wins). 1.20 Southwell (Bet International Rugby – Betdaq Claiming Stakes): Top-rated on the official figures Carbon Hoofprint and three-wins-out-of-six Lordship (a 20.0 bet and lay as I write) sometimes like to be out in front. The last time Flores Sea came here, he was backed to repeat an all-the-way win on the course in March but was slowly away. Paper favourite Lindoro scored in much better company six weeks ago. Autumn Blades and Dabbers Ridge, both 7f specialists, are also dropped from class-3 and class-4 races. Dabbers Ridge seems to have ‘gone’ since his days with Barry Hills, but Autumn Blades represents a stable which is three out of four in claimers here this year. 1.50 Southwell (Bet Multiples – Betdaq Maiden Auction): An intriguing contest, with Vegas Palace odds on this morning because she has acted well on the course but Brigadoon was seen in a much better maiden at Newmarket, showing up well though unfancied at 100-1. Brigadoon will need all of this trip and I fancy he’ll try to make all the running, and might just have that bit of class to get clear of his field. Trainer Willie Jarvis is two out of three with his juvenile runners on this course in the last five years; I’m choosey if he is! 4.20 Wolverhampton (Bet Premier League Football – Betdaq Handicap): While Richard Fahey’s team finally seems to have dropped its hands, Richard Hannon’s is still punching its weight: but can Getcarter repeat his late-summer flurry of wins after six weeks off? Labisa had an even longer break before pulling too hard on her reappearance here; she’s drawn wide and will have it all to do to catch Liberty Trail, a front-runner with a handy stalls ‘pozzy:’ 21.0 on Betdaq this morning screams back-and-lay. Nora Mae has a racing weight but is drawn on the wide outside and Emeebee, a good third at Newmarket, won his only start on today’s course: if only his stable was in better form (no wins in 98 days) but this is their only runner and they have one of the best strike rates at the track. 5.50 Wolverhampton (Bet Asian Handicaps – Betdaq Nursery): The Flat season ended with a stunning sequence of winners from Godolphin, including a cascade of two-year-old successes, among them Nafura’s over CD. The half-sister to Dubai Destination has been penalised 9lb for that, and that’s all going to If I Were A Boy, who was runner-up that day. But I don’t think it’s enough for the four-and-half lengths that separated them. Anaya’s got ‘seconditis’ and I shall be laying her, but House Red looked a different animal when winning after his gelding operation, and Sounds Of Thunder could welcome the step up in trip. 6.50 Wolverhampton (Betdaq on 0870 178 1221 Median Auction Maiden): Oriental Cavalier (on 70) is 2lb clear of Mile High Lad, with the rest nowhere, on official (base) figures but, when Racing Post Ratings adds in the speed figures – and whatever other ingredients for their future ratings – Kool Katie moves past ‘Cavalier’ as the main danger to (clear top now) Mile High Lad. But those future ratings obviously don’t include trainer-form data: Geraldine Rees hasn’t had a winner since Sea The Stars was a maiden. Well, not that bad, but the poor girl is out ‘cold’ in that awful Post table, which must have some trainers gnashing their false teeth and leaving their breakfast on the plate. Also in the list is Southcombe - no wins in 600 days almost goes back to Sea The Stars as a yearling - Sowersby (321) and McWilliams (286); they make the Rees figures (a mere 104 days without winning) less cringeworthy. It suggests that we might be betting in a seven-horse race, not the original 13 declared, and that’s what a professional likes to hear: even with a short-priced favourite, the ‘book’ of offers is no longer overround; any bets are in the punter’s favour. I’d have to stick with Oriental Cavalier, with Graham Gibbons a huge 185 points in profit to a level stake on this course. Somebody’s been getting value!
