Saturday 7 November DAQMAN  DAQMAN ON 13 LAYS IN A ROW: Daqman dared to oppose Sir Michael Stoute and Paul Nicholls and made it 13 consecutive winning lays when two more morning favourites bit the dust yesterday. HOW TO HAVE ‘FREE’ BREEDERS CUP BETS: He deliberately targeted a 20-point lays profit to give him free bets on the big evening meeting at Santa Anita. His overall profit on the 13-up sequence is now 120 points. MAN OF IRON AMONG HIS WINNERS: So it was all bonus from Betdaq when two of his Breeders Cup bets obliged, Man Of Iron (won 13-2) and Informed Decision (won 3-1). Precariously perched on lucky 13, I’m putting it to the punters and laying the hot horse of the night, and it’s Zensational! He’s a dirt-track drag-racer, just setting it up for Godolphin. I’m also laying a European star contender but I’ve spent more than I would earn. After all, it’s the greatest night of the year. In England, it’s the dull old, drab old November Handicap, but no bonfire of his vanity, please, for Frederik Tylicki. He’s sensational. 3.15 Doncaster (November Handicap): Tylicki can crown himself boys’ champion on the lightly raced Stormy Weather (12.0 on Betdaq this morning). If you fillet the field, removing all the older horses and leaving the bare bones of a contest between those aged three and four - that’s how it’s been in seven of the last eight years – and dismiss the low draw (only two winners in the last decade below stall 13), you are left only with Charm School, Merchant Of Dubai, Kings Destiny, First Avenue, Helvelius and Conquisto. Merchant Of Dubai, a huge 29.0 on Betdaq, comes to this after twice humping welter burdens, then meeting Tastahil at levels in a Group-3. Kings Destiny will make them all know they’ve been at the races, and the likely fast pace will suit Hevelius but he’s back up to 90 after a good run back last time on his first start since July, which suggests this has been a target. Charm School has kept good company (as has Conquisto), and John Gosden has won the race three times. With 22 winners in 14 days, Godolphin (Friston Forest is ‘flying’ at home) have to be feared but for me it’s a race for the lightly-raced stayers in Merchant Of Dubai and Stormy Weather, both with runs in the last fortnight. If I back Merchant Of Dubai, I must have a pound on stablemate Ella, also running here after a light season. 3.25 Wincanton (Badger Ales Trophy): Since the turn of the century, horses of double-figure age have failed to score eight years in a row, and there’s been just one winner carrying more than 11st 3lb (The Tother One would have to do a Royal Auclair). But be warned that only four stables have won it since back into the 1990s; Pipe, Nicholls and Bowen are the three with runners today, after sharing the prize for more than a decade, interrupted just once by the absent Mr Hobbs. The Package has had a run back to get the freshness out of him, and is up in chasing trip, even further than his best run over hurdles (beaten two lengths by Made In Japan, conceding more than stone). Exmoor Ranger might have won the Jewson but for falling three out; if his fencing has been sorted, he is well handicapped here. 6.45 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup Turf Juvenile): Be warned of an ‘explosion’. That’s how Interactif’s jockey, Kent Desormeaux, describes his mount, who will love the fast surface. For the away team, John Gosden is looking to Grand Criterium runner-up Pounced to ‘do a Donativum’, his winner of this last year: on a line through Buzzword, Pounced would have been involved in the finish of the Dewhurst. 7.23 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup Turf Sprint): Some horses just don’t like crowds, the hustle and bustle; they get unnerved, put off their stride.  The morning favourite here, California Flag, was only 10th in this last year and, in fact, has been unplaced four times in fields of 12 or more.Three wins out of six, including the Duty Free at Newbury last time, give the Fallon-ridden Strike The Deal a chance but his form since his first season in a double-figure field is 00043044000. Who else does that remind you of? Lord Shanakill. Remember how he was always the bridesmaid in fields bigger than 10 starters (with form figures 33020)? They just don’t know how to win, but I know a filly that does: Diamondrella has won seven in a row on turf. She’s won on firm; she’s won on soft; she’s won on dirt. There’s no stopping her. A high draw is essential round the tight bend and also with that bonus start over the others is last year’s winner, Desert Code. Desert Code and Diamondrella will be taken along by flying starter Canadian Ballet, with California Flag trying to get across to grab that lead: lay both front-runners. 8.10 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup AW Sprint): Bob Baffert,who’s won the last two runnings of this, and had a lot of other Breeders Cup winners besides, insists that Zensational is the best he’s ever trained. But this colt is the original bet and lay: he could be 10 lengths clear and long odds on with the winning post in sight but this is not a front-runners track and there are some mighty tough hold-up horses: the Godolphin course winner Gayego won the best trial with a devastating finish. There’s another reason why Zensational might not last out: that reason is called Fatal Bullet; he’s another flying fox with the farmer after him! Two bet and lays in one race? Gayego, then! 8.49 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup AW Juvenile): Baffert gain: he’s won it with Vindication and Midshipman in the last seven years; now he’s ‘Lookin At Lucky number three.’ But dual US Grade-1 winners over 7f-plus have left this race behind in doing so: six out of six have failed. So, is it over to Aidan? With both Dewhurst winner Beethoven and Phoenix scorer Alfred Nobel in the field, Ballydoyle must have a great chance but the pair have had 17 races between them and they, too, could be feeling the effects of a long season (both have been on the go nearly six months). So, all in all, there could be turn-up here, and that may come from Radiohead: 18.5 on the Daq, as I write. His dam’s side is US bred, he’s got the pedigree for the trip and he has the speed - and the ability to conserve it in a race - which saw him a fast-finishing third in the Nunthorpe after winning the Norfolk at Royal Ascot. 9.28 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup Turf Mile): It’s Goldikova at the double but last year’s third, Whatsthescript, hasn’t done much for the form since, and was beaten by Cowboy Cal, when third in the Oak Tree Mile. Gladiatorus needs all his own way in front but, heh, that’s Cowboy Cal’s game, too. And Karelian’s. And Courageous Cat’s. So it looks all set up for the European jockeys to make a late swoop with one from Delegator, Goldikova and the winner, Zacinto, who will love the fast track. I shall lay Goldikova on the grounds that she’s another who has had a long season – she started on May 17 – and that the scorching pace (which she’s likely to get here) was her undoing in the Foret. 10.12 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup Dirt Mile): Just to confuse you, the Dirt Mile is run here on Pro-Ride; if it was on dirt, I’d look no further than Midshipman. Mastercraftsman is not the fastest starter in the world, and they’ll be taking the legs off him and boxing him in early (he’s in trap one). But he may still have the class as a Guineas winner, and the experience of Dundalk may help, as it did Man Of Iron. 10.57 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup Turf): You wait and wait for it, and three No.6 buses arrive together: Dar Re Mi is just about my favourite horse of the season; Sir Michael Stoute, the world’s best trainer of older horses, runs two. And there are only seven runners. Conduit has won the King George since taking this last year, while the banished Spanish Moon (he’s barred from running in England because of bad behaviour in the stalls) has come two photo verdicts away from six in a row. Dar Re Mi? Don’t even mention it. I turned away to count my chickens after the Vermeille but they hatched an objection and threw her out. Another ‘cert’ for you bet-and-lay fans is Precious Passion, who will be halfway to Las Vegas by the time the others find their stride. You have to bet in the race on the day, and that’s likely to be the story of it: a runaway pacemaker on a very fast surface. Dar Re Mi and Conduit are likely to have left this behind with hard races in the Arc, which Spanish Moon wisely swerved. But can he catch Precious Passion? 11.45 Santa Anita (Breeders Cup AW Classic): Rip Van Winkle, the horse with corns, has never won in a double-figure field; Zenyatta, the filly with as many wins as I have had lays (and I mean my 13 in a row) has never run against colts and never over this far. So I’ll turn to the world’s greatest anorak, the speed-figure king Andy Beyer, who currently rates Quality Road the fastest horse in the world. At 13.0, I’ve got value, as well as quality. That’s what this column’s all about, I hope.
