IRELAND'S EYE
All eyes will be on Pandorama today as he makes his chase debut at Punchestown opening day of its two day fixture and the exciting 6yo should be capable of using this as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. On an interesting card we hope to get amongst the winners with a decent priced ex point winner in the opening maiden hurdle on the Punchestown card while Nina Carberry can bring home another former pointer in the closing bumper.
Garryowen Star (8/1) and Keredari (4/1) proved our sole placed selections yesterday though we did recommend narrow Galway novice chase winner China Rock (11-5/2) whilst If Per Chance (7-6/1) also finished in the frame in a competitive Leopardstown handicap.
Racing opens at Punchestown with a two mile maiden hurdle where five of the runners carry a penalty against mainly unexposed types. The Hurl made a promising return to action following a ‘break’ in a similar contest over this track over two miles and four les than a fortnight ago but the ‘Mouse’ Morris trained 6yo does not look value at the forecast prices with the ‘bounce’ factor a possible danger though the drop in trip could prove beneficial. Second favourite Hazeymm’s debut run when finishing a fine second to On The Way Out at Gowran would make him an automatic choice but he has not really built on that performance and the Edward O’Grady trained 6yo was held when exiting at the last at Listowel last time. The vote goes to Park debutant Billie Beg from the Dessie Hughes yard despite the fact that he came down on the second of his point starts earlier this year. However the son of Muroto created a good impression when slamming the subsequent dual point scorer Theresathingwrong in a Dungourney point last December. He looks to have the necessary pace to score over shorter trips and the Roger Loughran ridden 6yo can belie his lack of experience here and score at the expense of the Paul Nolan trained Gypsy Scholar who scored in a Towcester bumper and the 99 rated hurdler ran well in taking second to yesterdays chase winner China Rock when last seen over a year ago in a Listowel 2m 4f maiden hurdle.
Former pointer Psycho from the Tony Martin yard is clear top rated in the 2m hurdle at Punchestown at 1-55 today and though the 8yo has been rather luckless during his hurdle career in the main he should collect this contest under Ruby Walsh. Although he has only scored twice during his career the Dr Massini gelding and been somewhat below par on his last couple of starts on good ground following a narrow second in the Pierse hc Hurdle where the weights going up on the morning of the race probably did him no favours. With ground to suit here he could hold ‘too many guns’ in receipt of weight from many of his chief rivals . One that could run well despite having to give 6lbs to the selection is the progressive Deal Done from the Dessie Hughes stable – a comfortable winner at Navan on heavy over this trip before running a close second to Head Of The Posse over the course and four furlongs further when last seen in February. Noel Meade introduces an interesting newcomer in the ex French flat and hurdle winner Rahan De Marcigny and with the stable in form the 4yo under Tony McCoy merits close attention.
The closing 2m bumper for four year olds at Punchestown at 4-25 will see the Willie Mullins trained Vertige Dore go off a short priced favourite on the back of a decent second to subsequent snug bumper winner Lucky William at Listowel on his debut over this trip. Although the Kingsalsa gelding should go close to rewarding his supporters who made him a short priced favourite on that occasion he may have to play second best to the Noel Meade trained Perfect Smile who ran well in taking fourth in a competitive contest over course/distance here on similar ground at the Festival in late March on his Park debut. However he had looked a decent sort on his only start ‘between the flags’ and had a maiden point ‘in the bag’ when toppling two from home here in February. With the Meade stable now in full swing he can give Nina Carberry yet another bumper winner where another pointer Al Ferof merits consideration as the Liz Doyle trained son of Dom Alco scored well on his point debut at Athlacca where he was quietly supported before beating the market leader in good style.
2-25 Punchestown – 2m 4f maiden hurdle
Johnny Harringtons HUGO DE VINDECY created a good impression when beating a useful yardstick in Cranky Corner in a Fairyhouse bumper on debut and was far from disgraced in taking third to the useful Sweeps Hill a month later at Leopardstown in a similar contest. Though the 5yo has to give weight away he can land this contest on hurdles debut at the expense of Oliver McKiernas once raced Whodoyouthink who ran well for a long way over the track/trip in a bumper some seven months ago.
