IRELAND'S EYE
After a day off on Saturday we had technical problems yesterday but we hope to return in triumphant fashion today where a mixed card at Roscommon where we can let ourself go with an improving chaser in a competitive novice whilst a four year old mare is taken to land a less than competitive mares novice chase.
Saver Williams Wishes (7/2-3/1) kept our run of winners going on Friday when landing the opening maiden hurdle at Worcester where our well supported nap Keoghs Bar (3-9/4) faded badly in the closing stages.
Aidan O’Briens Purple Heart is bidding to open at the fourth time of asking in the opening 7f maiden at Roscommon at 3-15 and though today will be the first time that the son of Sadler’s Wells will encounter fast ground he has been somewhat disappointing in the main and at the current odds Johnny Murtaghs mount is overlooked on this occasion. With John Oxxs yard still looking for their first 2yo winner their representative Keredari is passed over and we will concentrate on the once raced runners to land the spoils on this occasion. Andrew Olivers My Point Exactly probably boasts the best form on the strength of his promising third in a Curragh maiden over this trip on starkly contrasting ground over a fortnight ago with the fourth finisher Jan Vermeer scoring in the interim. Though he started as one of the complete outsiders there he should start at much shorter odds on this occasion and another who fills the same profile is the Kevin Prendergast trained Munaawer. This fellow started at fancy odds on debut in a decent Curragh Leopardstown maiden over this trip over three weeks ago where he was far from disgraced in finishing a fair fifth to the useful Chabal who only gave best to the highly promising Kingsfort subsequently in the Group 1 National Stakes. Another who should improve for his initial effort is Dermot Welds Palm Ridge who kept on to take a reasonable fourth placing in an average Gowran 7f maiden over three months ago.
The Grade 3 two mile novice chase at Roscommon at 5-15 this afternoon may only have 7 runners but it looks a fascinating contest which sees five of the younger/progressive grade take on the admirable near veteran Emmpat – fresh from maintaining his 100% chase record when accounting for warm favourite Archie Boy at Listowel. Though the 11yo will certainly relish the ground he could find it tough to match strides with some potentially decent sorts and chief amongst these are Let Yourself Go and Fisher Bridge. The former won his sole point on fast ground at Ballybunion two years ago and though Adrian Maguires lightly raced 7yo has landed a bumper, hurdle and two chases to that tally in the interim on mainly soft and heavy ground the son of Zaffaran has always shaped as if better ground would see him in a better light. Having landed a Ballinrobe novice on his second start having disappointed on better ground on chase debut when his stable were not quite ‘on song’ he put up a decent performance when lowering the colours of hitherto unbeaten Montero (gave 9lbs) on demanding ground at Galway over 2m 1f where he put in a fine round of jumping. Well back in third on that occasion was Wins Now who has subsequently landed a Ballinrobe novice event last week. However the selection who has the 3lb claims of Shane Hassett to draw upon meets a potent danger in the guise of the Noel Meade trained Fisher Bridge who is rated a stone superior to him over hurdles and the Paul Carberry ridden 6yo put up a nice performance when snugly accounting for his main market rival Streets Of Gold on chase debut over 2m 4f at Kilbeggan over two weeks ago on soft to heavy. His best form has been achieved with some ease in the ground however while the ground will hold no fears for the Paul Flynn trained unbeaten dual chase scorer Kalleshan while another who cannot be left out of calculations is the likely front runner and dual hurdle winner Norther Bay who will appreciate the good to firm ground and Eoin Griffins 6yo can improve for his initial effort at Ffos Las behind Archie Boy who was conquered by Emmpat last time.
A three mile mares novice chase at Roscommon at 5-45 and this is certainly a contest which at face value will not take that much winning. Leader in the betting is he only subsequent Park scorer Conker Nails but with a rating of 89 William Codds 8yo hardly looks bombproof and her three efforts to date over fences have not been that jaw dropping. The one that our vote falls on is the unexposed 4yo Your Night Out from the William Durkan yard who has achieved a hurdle rating on par with Conker Nails on her four efforts to date over flights and her fair sixth placing to recent winner No Stopping Sarah on her handicap hurdle debut at Ballinrobe over three months ago should see her go close here on her chase debut whilst the 56 rated flat maiden has been running consistently on the flat more recently. Though the trip could be on the sharp side the Mark Molloy trained Kingston Queen could rate a small saver here as the 6yo who won her maiden point in decent style on testing ground at Belclare last year should not be inconvenienced by better ground as a daughter of Moscow Society and has the benefit of a run over fences in addition to her point experience.
