IRELAND'S EYE
Worcester hope to put the abandonment of their previous meeting last week behind this evening and there looks to be good hopes of an Irish success in the opener at decent odds while there is a decent chance of a minor upset in the main race of the day at the Newmarket July meeting. Meanwhile in Ireland a couple of promising sorts can put us in profit in a couple of maidens.
Disappointment last night when the trojan efforts of the Uttoxeter executive failed while our two selections at Roscommon could only finish second with Hopeful Venture (13/2-4/1) just touched off in a handicap hurdle while What’s News (11/2) could not cope with an outsider in another handicap.
One of the features of the afternoon is the Cherry Hinton Stakes at headquarters at 2-35 and it throws up a fascinating clash between the winner of the Albany Stakes over todays trip of 6f and 4 of the runners who failed to make an impact on the American flying machine Jealous Again in the Queen Mary over the minimum trip two days later. The time of the latter contest not surprisingly proved very fast and though Ed Dunlops Albany Stakes winner Habaayib looked quite decent in disposing of the favourite Lillie Langtry in a fair time the suspicion is that the Queen Mary form may prove superior this afternoon with the extra furlong looking likely to suit the fillies who finished second, third and fourth there namely Misheer, Ceedwell and Capercaillie whilst eight placed Crown would appear to have too much to do to overturn the form against the placed fillies. The vote here goes to the Clive Brittain trained Misheer who though beaten five lengths by the winner was nevertheless around two lengths ahead of the previously unbeaten Ceedwell and Capercaillie and she should confirm the form with that pair in the hands of Neil Callan. The best bet at longer odds could prove to be the snug Salisbury winner Swan Wings representing the Andrew Balding/William Buick combination in a race which boasts a good winning record for last time out maiden victors.
The stats on the opening 2m maiden hurdle at Worcester look decidedly non favourite friendly with no market leader registering in the past 7 years and the 6-10 event looks likely to continue that trend this evening. The ultra consistent Grasscutter has an unhappy knack of finishing second and he is far from certain to ‘buck that trend’ here while Nicky Hendersons Seraphim Knight is making his hurdle debut on the back of some fair efforts in bumpers. Nigel Twiston Davies 4yo Civil Servant will need to improve in the jumping department on his third start over hurdles while the ex John Kiely trained King Cannavaro could improve for his second start for the Evan Williams yard in first time cheekpieces. However it is the Irish trained Commons Glory on her third start over hurdles who gets the nod to score for John McConnell as her fair eight placing in a decent Tipperary maiden has subsequently thrown up two subsequent good winners in the interim. With a 7lb claimer on board and getting all the allowances the lightly raced Bellewstown bumper winner can land the odds at generous odds from hurdle debutant World Time from the in form Tim Vaughan yard – a winner over 11f on the flat and rated 71 who finished within nine lengths of Tartan Bearer on one occasion and Ian Wiliams unexposed Danetime Panther who would have definite prospects on his third start over hurdles on the evidence of his hurdle debut in a decent Newbury novice last December.
Andrew Oliver looks to have decent prospects of landing the 7f fillies maiden at Naas tonight at 7-30 with his consistent Cilium. The daughter of War Chant has twice gone down fighting over a mile on her starts to date and she was a 50/1 chance when keeping on well to finish second to the warm favourite Dance Pass on good to yielding at this venue on her debut with one of tonights rivals Simla Sunset less than a length behind in third. Although she could only finish third to Final Approach (favourite for 8-00 contest here tonight) at the Curragh subsequently on soft where she was only headed late in finishing a close third the drop back in trip here and the experience gained should see the Chris Hayes ridden filly finally open her account. Whilst the form runners Mean Lae (just beaten over 6 1/2f at Limerick on faster ground) and the twice raced Simla Sunset hold obvious claims the debutant Good To Follow (one of two representatives from the Edward Lynam yard) who is related to several decent winners who could pose the main danger.
Tony McCoy and Tom Dascombe are likely to start favourites to land the 2m 4f novice hurdle at Worcester at 7-40 with Hope Road who has been mixing hurdles and chasing of late and the 5yo scored decisively over course and distance over a month ago. Nevertheless we will take on the ‘jolly’ here with the progressive mare Ring For Time who was equally impressive in landing a Stratford handicap hurdle over 2m 6f last time and gets 7lbs from the market leader here. The William Kennedy ridden 6yo can oblige here at the expense of Hopes Road whilst the ex Irish Cailin Na Ri would have prospects on her second to Quell The Storm at Newton Abbot in early May. The Twiston Davies trained Billie Magern has proved costly to follow over hurdles but cannot be totally dismissed under 5lb claimer Tom Molloy.
Blue Ridge Lane was our selection to land a Curragh 10f handicap 11 days ago and the 3yo was far from disgraced in finishing a fair third to the more experienced Johann Zoffany. That was her third time in filling that position and the manner of her staying on effort there offers encouragement that she can finally get her head in front in a mile and two maiden at Naas tonight at 8-30 under Pat Smullen as she seems suited by the trip and some ease in the ground. Her main danger could come in the shape of the twice raced David Myerscough trained Signore Momento who was just touched off by the 72 rated Captain Henry over nine furlongs on faster ground at Ballinrobe over three weeks ago.
