IRELAND'S EYE
It’s the second day of Galway Festival and we have are high hopes of an English victory in the feature event at a lucrative price (14.0 on BETDAQ) while we also are siding with a couple of decent priced selections in the opening couple of National Hunt contests.
Day 1 of Galway and it was success as we registered three winners with pride of place going to one of our bets of the day Mosstown (11s morn and 13.8 on the DAQ-7/1) while the short priced ‘good thing’ Stunning View (4/7-4/9) also obliged and our saver No One Tells Me (7-9/2) delivered the first leg of a double for that yard. However our other top choice Gratified (9/2-4/1) was just ‘nailed’ inside the distance whilst our final choice Honorary Title (14-10/1) ran well when taking third in the bumper.
TOTE PLACEPOT RACES 1 TO 6 MAIDEN HURDLE 2m
An open maiden hurdle with several bumper winners leading the betting. Henry De Bromheads Another Mexican scored easily in a Tramore bumper on fast ground before running a fair runner up at Killarney over 2m 4f on yielding but the 6yo is untried on soft ground. One who should act on the surface is the Willie Mullins trained easy Roscommon bumper winner For The Staff but that was a weak contest while Dermot Welds dual bumper winner Teach Nua has shown his best form on good and faster ground. Tipperary bumper winner Bantry Common is another who could be suited by a sounder surface and is making his hurdle debut here. One who looks worth consideration is the Arthur Moore trained 2m 4f Gowran winner Theatre Festival on the evidence of a fairly promising fifth in a Down Royal maiden hurdle on penultimate start. However the lightly raced 7yo may have to settle for the minor honours if the Jim Culloty trained Qualviro can recapture the form he showed in two hurdles at both Leopardstown and Fairyhouse from the optimum up to two miles and four on mainly a soft surface as the French bred was not beaten that far behind a couple of fair sorts in Voler La Vedette and The Last Derby. Jessica Harrington enjoyed a double here yesterday and her consistent Glaczer Flyer again has prospects of reaching the frame here under Barry Geraghty.
CARA DIAMONDS CHASE 2m 6f
With the ground officially described as soft this open looking chase could be narrowed down to a handful of hopefuls. The one that appeals the most is the Joe Crowley trained Pako Jack who scored at the third time of asking when landing a Kilbeggan novice chase over this trip 11 days ago on good ground. Though the 5yo winning form has mainly been achieved on better ground he does boasts winning hurdle form on heavy and was placed on soft on the flat at this fixture in 2007. Another last time out chase winner id the Dessie Hughes trained The Rall who won over 3m 1f at Wexford but the 7yo could be suited by better ground and a sterner test of stamina. Liam McAteer who opened his account here yesterday is represented by the 9yo Tasman who is a course and distance winner over fences on good but he also boasts winning form on heavy and though he is making his seasonal debut here the Davy Russell ridden gelding enters calculations. Charlie Swans On The Other Hand and Flemross are two who would be better served by better ground and also have penalties to burden.
TOTE JACKPOT HANDICAP 2m
Dermot Welds record in this particular handicap is far from impressive in the last decade but the leading trainer at the fixture looks to have good claims with his 4yo Almolahek here off what looks a reasonable mark. Though still a maiden after 8 attempts and stepping up in trip the son of Red Ransom should be suited by the prevailing ground having finished third in a Down Royal maiden hurdle on heavy in February behind Chevalier County and his last run on the flat saw him take a fair seventh in a Leopardstown 10f handicap off a 6lb higher mark. There are several course specialists in the field who hold chances including the unbeaten (in 3) course and distance winner My Valley who has been out of form of late and the long absent Diego Garcia who won this race in 2006 but the main danger to the selection could come from another maiden in the shape of the Dessie Hughes trained Mohtarres. Though untried at the trip and on ground this testing the Paul Towend ridden 6yo was only just touched off in a Bellewstown handicap over 1m 6f over three weeks ago on yielding ground and is now 4lb higher in the weights.
TOTE GALWAY MILE EBF HANDICAP 1m 1/2f
The feature event of the evening where luck in running tends to play a big part. There are quite a few in form runners in the line up and on Curragh running in late June there should not be much to separate the winner of that mile handicap between the winner Marias Dream, Rock And Roll Kid and fourth placed Castle Bar Sling but the first two are not particularly well drawn here and the winner has since been turned over by another progressive sort in bottom weight Rose Hip from the Joseph Murphy yard. However the last named is herself not aided by the low draw and though Kevin Prendergasts Dedo has got a favourable draw he has been creeping up the handicap for some fine placed efforts and the 4yo may just be found out by the stiff 8 1/2f here. However the two against the field could prove to be the sole English challenger Wigwam Willie from the in form Kevin Ryan yard and the first time blinkered Belle’s Ridge from the Tim Doyle yard. The former is a six time winner on the North of England tracks and the Willie Supple ridden 7yo will be ideally suited by testing conditions and comes here on the back of a gritty success over 10f at Ripon on good to soft. Tim Doyles Belle’s Ridge three wins have been achieved over slightly further than tonights trip and he will be staying on when the rest have ‘cried enough’ and with a decent draw Billy Lee’s mount must enter calculations.

On an afternoon which could see Dermot Weld in the winners enclosure on more than one occasion his runner here Brushed Aside looks difficult to oppose on the promise she showed when taking a staying on fourth placing behind Rahya Cass in a Curragh 6f maiden 17 days ago. Though she had the Aidan O’Brien trained favourite there Devoted To You one placing and half a length in front there it looks unlikely that O’Briens charge who had the benefit of a run will confirm those placings here with the extra furlong looking likely to suit the likely short priced Weld market leader here. Although Tommy Stacks Sammuramat has been somewhat disappointing to date the twice raced daughter of Dansili could have placed prospects on her debut effort where she only finished some 6 lengths behind the subsequent good winner Famous.

Arguably the trickiest contest of the day and it is not with an air of over confidence that we submit three against the field to make a profit on the DAQ. Senators Alibi, Guitar Man and Munsters Call are our tentative trio against the field. The former is now an 11 year old but he could go around here blindfolded as he has scored five times at the venue and three times over course and distance. He showed that he is not a back number with a staying on second in a Curragh handicap over the distance on penultimate start and with a favourable draw he could go close under Wayne lordan. Guitar Man who scored well in a Sligo 10f hc on latest probably needs further but the Paul Nolan runner is in form and though there are some reservations on the ground he could prove capable of a big run off an 8lbs higher mark. Munsters Call is making his seasonal debut but the Gillian Lee trained 5yo will be suited by testing ground and is drawn well.

Weld followers will be confident he can complete the three timer here with the short priced favourite and once raced Qassaar. However he is making his seasonal debut and his debut effort in finishing a fair fourth on softish ground at Leopardstown over this trip last October reads reasonably well in the context of a race of this nature we will take on the short priced ‘jolly’ with the twice arced filly Morethanafeeling. The William Durkan trained daughter of Verglas has shaped well at big odds on both starts to date on good ground and her most recent fifth in a Roscommon maiden has thrown up a couple of subsequent scorers and with a favourable draw she rates the value bet.

We are now recording the daily profit and loss of Ireland's Eye to help readers gauge the current form of the service. We will provide the profit / loss on the previous day to a £1 level stake on each selection (eg: a 5 point bet = a £5 stake). In the interests of consistency the profit / loss will be recorded at SP prices, however BETDAQ users can reasonably expect to beat SP in the majority of races.
