IRELAND'S EYE
Its Day 2 of the Killarney meeting and Northern Ireland houses an all National Hunt meeting where a relatively well weighted bottom weight holds definite prospects in a handicap hurdle. In Killarney a low weighted 8yo could oblige at odds of around 12/1 (you can expect odds of around 16.0 on the DAQ) in a handicap chase.
It was a fairly quiet day for us yesterday with just Royal County Star (4/6-4/7) tasting glory at Killarney while we managed to get the hotpot On Borrowed Wings (4/5) turned over in the finale at the same venue.
However we had to settle for the runner up berths with out 2 Newton Abbot selections Ring For Time (13/8-5/4) and Eastern Surprise 15/8-13/8.
Trainer Jessica Harrington does well with her runners at Downpatrick and she could ‘get the ball rolling’ in the first contest of the day at the Co. Down venue at 2-40 with the lightly raced 8yo Glaczer Flyer. The Galway bumper winner has shown a fair level of form over hurdles to date over mainly 2m 4f on varying grounds and a reproduction of his placed efforts in Killarney behind Junior Boss and Trimbellina at Kilbeggan (subsequent comfortable handicap hurdle winner) should suffice in this 2m 2f maiden hurdle to give Barry Geraghty his first win back from injury. The likeliest danger to the selection could be the twice raced Harry Rogers trained Flamingo Rainbow whose debut fourth to Fier Destrier would give him sound claims here. The O’Hanlon trained 4yo mare Inquisitive Look is another who shows definite signs that a maiden is within her capabilities.
Former champion Irish trainer Noel Meade may not be having his best season but the Meath handler could be smiling after the 4-10 at Downpatrick as his twice raced 5yo Byeforthepresent looked the answer to the 2m 6f maiden hurdle. The Presenting gelding stayed on nicely to take fourth in a fair Gowran 2m 4f maiden hurdle on his debut on yielding ground behind Cranky Corner over two months ago and subsequently filled the same position in a bumper over the same trip at the same venue on faster ground. He can give rider Barry Geraghty a double on the day and his main dangers could come from the Charlie Swan trained Something Fishy who shapes as if he is ideally suited by better ground and stayed on to finish sixth in admittedly a slowly run Listowel contest on his hurdles debut while another unexposed type is the Paul Nolan trained Quo Video on his third start over jumps and now steps up six furlongs in distance.
The 2m 6f handicap hurdle at Downpatrick at 4-40 sees an unpromising bunch assemble with precious little recent form to boast of among the 15 original entries.
However one who does boast recent form and course form at that is the Ray McGlinchey trained 8yo McSwynes Bay who has been placed twice on the track and his most recent effort when losing out to Our Monty in an extended 2m 7f novice chase reads well in the context of this contest. Shane Jackson takes the mount on the maiden who showed little ‘between the flags’ on his return to hurdles and off 10-11 he could prove the answer here from top weight Sir Ejay from the in form Charlie Swan yard under Lenny Flynn (claims 3lbs) who is another maiden but holds definite prospects on his recent second placing in a Kilbeggan 3m hc hurdle and is now just 3lbs higher at the weights. The ‘Shark’ O’Hanlon is trebly represented here and the former pointer Gougane near the top of the handicap is probably his best chance for success while the long distance Cork raider Paradise Ally is another to consider off a lower weight though he has little in hand of Sir Ejay on their Kilbeggan running.
Only four runners but the lack of numbers in the opening 11f handicap at Killarney this evening at 6-00 does not make it any easier to solve. John Oxxs top weight Dabirana looks set to go off favourite on the strength of her third in a Listed Fairyhouse contest over a mile and a furlong 268 days ago on soft to heavy. Dermot Welds Casual will appreciate the ground but was most unconvincing on faster ground at Naas last time and has questions to answer in first time blinkers. The solution could be in siding with the Aidan O’Brien runner Francisco Goya – the only colt in the field and though he has not raced on ground worse than good to yielding the improving 3yo who usually races prominently and easily dismissed the Weld filly Blue Ridge Lane at Naas over 10f last time. With the very useful Joseph O’Brien taking off 7lbs here he could make it a ‘pillar to post’ success over the fillies.
The 2m 1f hc chase at Killarney this evening at 8-00 will not take that much winning with several of the leaders in the market readily opposable on ground/form reasons. A sporting vote goes to the Willie Austin trained Real Overdrive – a two time winner on varying grounds and a winner of his only chase on heavy at Fairyhouse over two miles in March of this year. Though the 8yo is now 7lbs higher at the weights the Adrian Leigh ridden gelding could spring a minor surprise at the expense of another outsider Perpetuum who has only had 3 pops over fences to date and has shown a liking for soft ground. Likely favourite Alabamo Banjo will appreciate underfoot conditions but the majority of his best efforts have been when racing right handed.
Five previous chase winners line up for the 2m 6f novice event at Killarney at 8-30 with Tipperary winner Sonnium heading the betting. Along with Tony Martins dual chase winner Aggies Lad this fellow could have issues with the current going (officially yielding to soft) and it may be best to look elsewhere for the winner. The vote falls on the Dessie Hughes German bred Noble Prize who scored well over 3 miles at Limerick last time on good ground despite the fact that the 7yo has not scored on a soft surface. However he did finish third to Jaamid on his chase debut on soft at Fairyhouse over an inadequate 2m 1f and the Roger Loughran ridden gelding gets the nod over three time point winner Toby Jug who is another who would not appreciate the ground this deep but boasts the experience and recent form to go close.
