IRELAND'S EYE
There is a mixed card at Roscommon this evening and there looks a couple of good wagers in both codes with a former dual chase winner looking a good bet on his third start in a novice hurdle while a debutant can land the opener on the flat for Kevin Prendergast.
Yesterday proved just our second losing day of the month with just our saver Berties Dream (5/1) delivering while our nap Sonnium (7/2) could only finish third in the chase at Limerick and Plenty Of Chat (2-15/8) was soundly beaten in third in the Market Rasen opener and in the same contest we had a reverse when our lay Shiwawa succeeded at odds of 7/4.
Experience is usually a benefit against unraced sorts on easy ground in particular on the flat and the twice raced Jim Bolger trained Marfach would appear to hold a definite edge on that score in the opening 7f maiden at Roscommon this evening at 5-40. The American bred stepped up markedly on his debut effort when chasing home the Kevin Prendergast trained favourite Montecchio at Gowran about a fortnight ago in first time cheekpieces but he may have to settle for the runner up berth gain here as the Prendergast team are represented by an interesting debutant in Ejteyaaz – a half brother to a dual winner. Declan McDonaghs mount may prove too strong for the Bolger runner here and represents a stable who are having a fine season to date.
The 2m 4f novice hurdle at Roscommon tonight at 7-10 looks a fascinating contest with five previous hurdle victors taking on a big field which includes two point winners in addition to a point/chase scorer. There are questions marks against many of the penalised leaders in the market with Baily Rock having burst a blood vessel when disappointing at Tipperary last time while Edward O’Gradys Warne succeeded in landing a modest Listowel event over two miles last time in a slowish time but could be open to progression. Another last time out winner was Paul Nolans Run For Charlie who won over the distance on firm last time but he did show that he handles soft ground when taking third in a slowly run Tipperary maiden hurdle over two miles on penultimate effort. The value here could be prove to be the more exposed dual chase and point winner Battle Axe from the Lennon yard with Johnny Cullen on board. The 121 rated chaser will be suited by the distance and ground and though his two efforts over flights in the past were not noteworthy (exited at first in one and probably was not suited by good ground in other) he can make the most of the allowances here and the 9yo may prove too strong for the likely danger in Tarkari who justified favouritism in good style in landing a maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe on soft on his debut and though he was only fourth behind The Fist Of God on good ground subsequently he can provide the main danger to the selection if the step up in trip will suit the Willie Mullins runner.
Another Trump on his third start over hurdles looks the likely winner of the 2m maiden hurdle at Roscommon this evening at 8-10 under Alan Crowe. The 5yo shaped well in taking third on his debut in a big field Punchestown maiden hurdle before proving a little disappointing when filling the same position at Tipperary a month later. However tonights contest does not look that strong and the J P McManus owned runner may prove the answer here and justify favouritism with the form of his yard (Christy Roche) looking the main negative. However the stable have been among the winners of late and this fellow can justify market leadership here at the expense of the unexposed flat winning 4yo mare Lady Nova who won on soft on the flat and has been shaping with some promise without getting into the frame on recent starts.

We are now recording the daily profit and loss of Ireland's Eye to help readers gauge the current form of the service. We will provide the profit / loss on the previous day to a £1 level stake on each selection (eg: a 5 point bet = a £5 stake). In the interests of consistency the profit / loss will be recorded at SP prices, however BETDAQ users can reasonably expect to beat SP in the majority of races.
