DAQMAN on Wednesday

Wednesday 29 July DAQMAN  JACKPOT BET UP AT 15.5: Daqman launched Goodwood with a Betdaq-value coup in the very first race of the big meeting yesterday! He nominated Drumfire (won 8-1) at 15.5 for a jackpot bet to win 50 points. LEGER HARBINGER AT 12.0: His 12.0 St Leger bet, Harbinger (won 11-4), scored in the Gordon Stakes to give Daqman a fabulous can’t-lose bet-and-lay for the final Classic at Doncaster.   16-1 DOUBLE UP: Then he completed a double of more than 16-1 (first leg Drumfire) when Monsieur Chevalier (won 10-11) charged home in the Molecomb. It was his 15th winning bet in the last five days. I’ve never been a fan of modern jockeys, with the exception of master horseman Mick Kinane, who has been riding like an immortal again. You can rely on Kinane to ‘do a Lester’ and get it right nearly all the time. Such near-flawless jockeyship isn’t only race-riding; it’s the intelligence of a Gerrard or a Berbatov, being in the right place at the right time and injecting pace only when it’s needed. Nowhere is this skill and cool needed more than in God’s country on the gorgeous but tricky and undulating track at Goodwood. But I have to admit that Ryan Moore and Jimmy Fortune are doing that thing right now. They’re on top of their game. In fact, you should be able to rely on jockeys to get the best out of a horse - it’s the right of every punter – and, if the stats are on their side, and the horseflesh beneath them has got what it takes, then look no further, as in the opening Goodwood Stakes (2.10) and the big-betting Heritage Handicap (4.0). The main event, the Sussex Stakes, is spoiled for me at my breakfast distance from the race because it’s still guesswork whether Rip Van Winkle will run. Don’t forget to take the high road on the Sussex Downs again: five of the six races up to middle distances - the exception was Harbinger’s -  were won from stalls nine to 20 yesterday. And don’t forget to lay Harbinger at the 4-1 for the St Leger. Our plan for a win-win-win situation is almost there, with the Gordon Stakes success yesterday, the ‘overs’ for Doncaster (we took 12.0) and now the lay on him as favourite: I hope that, among those bets, you are arbed to the teeth! 2.10 Goodwood (Goodwood Stakes): Baddam is only a pound higher than when winning this last year, with Som Tala (favourite then) and Kasban behind, and he’ll probably go close again under power-rider Richard Hughes, since five of the last seven winners have carried 9st 1lb and more. These stats are simply pointing up the quality of the top-weights: those down the handicap are, literally, beneath them and the top-notchers also have the top-notch jockeys. As well as Hughes, there’s Frankie Dettori on Som Tala, and Ryan Moore – riding really well right now – on Woolfall Treasure but sitting on the form horse, as well as being favoured by the stats, is Jimmy Fortune on Swingkeel. A line through Judgthemoment makes Swingkeel cast-iron each-way. The man who launched Baddam and Som Tala on their staying careers, Mick Channon, has the best outsider: the yard has long held the view that Aaim To Prosper is a Cesarewitch type: forget his run at Kempton when ill prepared, and judge him on his turf success in a visor last time out. It remains to be seen whether the visor works again but he’s continued working smartly at home and my man in the long grass insists that ‘Prosper’ – 22.0 on Betdaq as I write – will be hard to keep out of the frame. 2.45 Goodwood (Vintage Stakes): The stats here say that there are really only seven horses to consider, since exposed animals with more than three runs don’t win it; so it’s a must event for each-way backers. Clive Cox (Xtension) is hoping that six-lengths proximity to Canford Cliffs in the Coventry is good enough for this - last year’s winner, Orizaba, was only fifth in the same Royal Ascot race – and Andrew Balding’s Barathea colt, Dreamspeed, is his only real challenger in the market this morning. Paul Cole must come into it, though. His Leicester maiden winner, Ishtar Gate, was beating subsequent scorers and Mata Keranjang (11.0 this morning) represents Group-2 form, since the colt just in front of him at Deauville earlier this month won the Prix Robert Papin on Sunday. 3.25 Goodwood (Sussex Stakes): Even in a single-figure select field, being in the top three stalls is an advantage, and his draw in two, plus his drop in trip and his slight setback, make Rip Van Winkle a favourite to oppose. But the way the money was stacking up behind Ghanaati on the Daq at around 10.30, he won’t be favourite at the ‘off’. Of only 18 fillies and mares have contested the Sussex Stakes, just three have won, and those behind her in the Guineas and Coronation Stakes don’t cover her with glory, but she gets a lethal 11lb from Paco Boy, and three-year-olds have taken 23 of the last 34 renewals. Like Ghanaati and Paco Boy, nine of the last 10 achieved a top two finish at Royal Ascot but the St. James’s Palace Stakes produces most Sussex winners: Lord Shanakill was third in it before winning his first Group 1 last time out at Chantilly; Rip Van Winkle has yet to win a Group 1, after coming fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby and second in the Eclipse, all to Sea The Stars. Two further negatives are that he must surely be feeling those hard races, and I don’t like horses with no clear campaign: he’s just ‘chancing’ every big one that comes along now, and it’s not easy to switch a horse’s training from a mile to a mile and half, then back to a mile and a quarter, and now a mile again. I say these things, win or lose today. 4.00 Goodwood (Heritage Handicap): Too Much Trouble and Braveheart Move have been going well at home but the gold star from the gallops is awarded to Highland Glen after coming out better than Harbinger in his latest work. Harbinger is not the best of home workers but ‘Glen’ has also caught the eye in the same groups as Tartan Bearer (King George second) and Class Is Class (third to Gordon Stakes runner-up Firebet). The 7.8 this morning is made by the strong support for Braveheart Move. We thank him very much, and give him due respect as the saver. LEICESTER: Nbhan (7.10) has impressed in his work with Bullet Man and Curtain Call. He’s been steadily improving but has really turned the corner in the last two weeks: I took place insurance on my 5.6 win bet.
