Tuesday 7 July
DAQMAN
NOW IT’S 150 POINTS PROFIT: Daqman has now amassed a profit of 150 points in two weeks and 61 winning bets in 23 days. His profit for July alone is already more than 60 points.
EIGHT DAYS OUT OF 10: Yesterday’s eighth successful day out of 10 included wins with Secret Venue (won 5-1) and gambled-on Orangeleg (won 11-4). TEN LAYS IN A ROW: Yet again his lay scored a valuable 10 points, the latest morning favourite to bite the dust being Resurge (2nd 9-4). That takes him to 41 out of 47 for the Flat season so far. TODAY Daqman previews the July Meeting, which starts tomorrow, has a banker at Wolverhampton and has found another favourite to lay at Uttoxeter tonight.
Mark Johnston’s Northern yard is poised to join the millionaire-stables’ club this week with a huge assault on the Newmarket July Meeting, which starts tomorrow. He has 34 entries.
Six trainers are already past the million prizemoney mark but there’s a long way to go to match last year’s tally of get-rich yards. If that is to be reached, then there’s room on top for seven more.
But some who scaled the heights in 2008 are well behind schedule this time around: we’ve seen only limited recent revivals from Brian Meehan and Saeed Bin Suroor, while Michael Jarvis and Jeremy Noseda, in particular, are lagging well behind their 2008 goldmines, though by peanuts in comparison with Aidan O’Brien, who must trawl another £2million to top last year’s total.
Ballydoyle needs a summer as hot as Barry Hills’ amazing run since the spring which has already taken him past last year’s money for the entire season.
But, apart from Yeats and a glut of three-year-old colts in the place queue behind Sea The Stars, Aidan O’Brien doesn’t have much ammunition until the two-year-olds hit stride: Frozen Fire, Beethoven and Emperor Claudius carry this week’s Ballydoyle hopes.
Jarvis pulled Dhushan out the other day because of the firm ground and the recent rain has been welcomed; he also has All The Aces in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes and Red Dune in Saturday’s feature, the Bunbury Cup.
Noseda will be hoping that once-raced-this-season Flying Spirit can return to form against Scenic Blast and J J The Jet Plane in Friday’s July Cup.
Mick Channon has only a 9% overall strike rate but my man in the long grass saw his Bahrain Trophy bound Too Much Trouble (Tony Culhane) impressing in his work, 10f around the loop of the Summer Gallop - readily taking the measure of Canwinn by three lengths – the other day. Too Much Trouble looks a nice sort who stays well and caught the eye running on late at Ascot.
John Gosden gave some of his Newmarket and Goodwood prospects a serious blow-out up the all weather and Rainbow View looked finally back to herself for tomorrow’s Falmouth Stakes.
Saturday morning saw her working 7f with Buckingham Palace Stakes fifth, Race Forever; she moved through impressively with her lad taking a tight hold until letting her open up comfortably by five or six lengths.
Rain provides further confidence and I shall be looking to get something early on her in my ‘book’ for the race, as there are a lot of obvious ones in form and she could open up all wrong. Take out Soviet Song and three-year-olds are six out of eight in the Falmouth, with only Rainbow View and Penny’s Gift to represent them tomorrow.
I want a good early price, guys? I hope you are all keen on Heaven Sent, Spacious and Eva’s Request. And don’t forget my one is 11lb behind Goldikova on official ratings. Thanks, I knew you’d see it my way.
I’m tipping Richard Fahey as the second Northern trainer to hit the magic six zeroes; he’s well represented this week but has a fair way to go, whereas Mark Johnston is only a few pounds short.
Swerving two decent entries at the meeting is Johnston’s Step At A Time – well regarded but has had a few problems - in favour of an easier task at Pontefract today (3.00): I took a bit of 11.5 each way in an eight-horse race, expecting some support later though maybe not enough for a bet and lay. We’ll see.
The South sends to Pontefract in force, despite the quiet day today, though only Johnston and Fahey face each other in the feature race, the class-3 King Richard 111 Handicap. The southern raider here is a jockey: Jamie Spencer has five booked rides, including last year’s winner of this, Dickie Le Davoir.
The going could end up on the soft side of good; there’s been rain overnight and more is forecast: ‘Dickie’ won’t mind that; he’s 8lb lower than last year and has a fair draw in eight, though something with solid form inside him would be a worry.
I can’t have Mark Of Meydan in the ‘coffin box’ stall one, from which he’s already been beaten here; Red Cape has tried three times and failed on this stiff track.
They’ve rushed in for Eton Rifles this morning but stall 12 looks a bit of a liability unless he gets his ground for certain; then they could look for better going on that side and turn everything around.
Mark Johnston’s Opus Maximus, who drops down a class and a furlong and likes soft ground, is very close to Eton Rifles in the handicap and much better drawn; I think the stiff six will suit: 21.0 on Betdaq this morning says it’s worth a try.
Fahey’s Charlie Tokyo (4.00) hasn’t had his ground since trying a class-2 Heritage Handicap at York; he was out of form last season but ought to come back sooner or later, dropped 22lb since then and down in the depths of class 4 today.
Red Cadeaux (4.45 Wolverhampton) looks in great form at home since his win and should be hard to beat under the penalty; still unexposed.
If the Racing Post’s ratings are only a fair guide, then you have to oppose Any Given Day (7.50) at odds on – 1.97 as I write – at Uttoxeter tonight: if their future ratings don’t take account of the boy’s claim, and if he’s worth every pound of it, then the more experienced Persian Warrior is 17lb clear of the favourite.
Any Given Day has to give up to two stone to 15 contenders, including some dark horses like the Pitmans’ Danetime Partner (8.6 on the Daq as I write), trained by Ian Williams, who can’t put a hoof wrong at the moment, while the favourite’s stable is currently out of form.
He could be ‘anything’ of course as a young novice but, with 10 successful lays in a row, I’m ready to take risks at odds on, with ratings and ‘dark’ runners on my side.

We are now recording the daily profit and loss of DAQMAN to help readers gauge the current form of the service. We will provide the profit / loss on the previous day to a £1 level stake on each selection (eg: a 5 point bet = a £5 stake). In the interests of consistency the profit / loss will be recorded at SP prices, however BETDAQ users can reasonably expect to beat SP in the majority of races.
Monday's Return was: PROFIT 27.88 points
