Thursday 30 July DAQMAN  50 POINTS PROFIT: Daqman is fractions short of 50 points profit at Goodwood so far, after his first-day jackpot with Drumfire (won 8-1) and his near miss for another big-odds winner yesterday. 14-1 SECOND: His bet, Mata Keranjang (2nd 14-1), came through the pack to win but was just run out of it by Daqman’s saver in the race, Xtension (won 7-2). JACKPOT BETS: He tries another win-50 jackpot today, and lays the favourite in one of the races on terrestrial TV. Borderlescott and Caracciola - at entirely different ends of the racing spectrum, sprinting and stamina -  make this a day for the fans’ armies at Goodwood, representing all that’s good about British racing as a spectator sport. Borderlescott is a consistent punter’s pal and has a helpful high draw for the King George yet the definite pace of the race is all on the other side. Caracciola has belied all the stats by winning the Cesarewitch and the marathon Queen Alexandra but now tries to win his first Group race at the age of 12. 2.10 Goodwood (Summer Vase): If Changing The Guard had had a high stall here, I would have said: ‘Trained Fahey, comes from the ideal prep race, got the draw, look no further.’ However, sod’s law, he hasn’t; he’s in four. But at least we get a price because of it - a huge 19.5 on Betdaq this morning – and he is a hold-up horse. Seven of the last eight winners of this were placed in the race in which Changing Of The Guard was a running on fifth when his stablemate, Firebet, had already got the race. Now Firebet is one hell of a yardstick, having run up to St Leger favourite Harbinger here on Tuesday. Your problem with the high draw is that so many fancied horses are there: Sandor (in 16) has never been out of the frame since his debut; Set The Trend has never been out of the frame, full stop. There’s a strong whisper for Hyades (17); Roman Republic (14) is with Mark Johnston, who farms this race, while Mirrored and Sopranist are from the classiest handicap stables in the land. I’m picking Set The Trend on the grounds that he is unexposed on good ground on turf, having raced mainly on AW and once on turf heavy: 13.0 on Betdaq. We have a couple of decent outsiders, and that’s always worth having a punt to small stakes for big returns. 2.45 Goodwood (King George Stakes): Front-runners Inxile, Jargelle and Rievaulx World are drawn on the stands’ rail, and the main protagonists, all in high stalls, will be hoping that Equiano (in 10) or Fat Boy (15) take them all at a fast enough clip. Ialysos’ gallops companion, Axiom, gave connections a confidence boost when he won yesterday, but he has a penalty for a Group-3 win at Sandown which means that, under the race condtions, he is giving 5lb to the Group-1 winner, Borderlescott. No way. Kingsgate Native still thinks he’s on stallion duty by all accounts so perhaps best that he’s loaded into the stalls first! It would be another major training feat by that man Stoute but he did get within a couple of lengths of Borderlescott last August when carrying a massive weight for a three-year-old. That leaves the 2007 winner of this, Moorhouse Lad, who might have won the Abbaye last backend but for running the race twice, as one of those who failed to pull up after the false start. At 8.5 Kingsgate Native and 12.5 Moorhouse Lad on a user-friendly Betdaq with scarcely an overround, I shall back both, with a saver on back-to-form Borderlescott. Why search the bookies for best odds when they add up to 110% and will tighten all the time while the Daq usually gets closer to a round book the nearer you get to the race. 3.25 Goodwood (Goodwood Cup): One thing you need on your side when you’re punting is a trainer who’s just hit form: Marcus Tregoning must pay to follow in this second half of the season after being brought to his knees by a virus. His day-one win with Finjan this week was almost as emotional as Henry Cecil’s 2007 return to the Oaks-winner’s enclosure at Epsom but the Goodwood Cup is a hard race to win for a young horse: a four-year-old has taken only one of the last eight. Askar Tau, who has been gelded since running fourth to Caracciola in the Cesarewitch, faces a ‘nearly’ horse at Group level in Centennial; he didn’t get as close to Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup as Tungsten Strike did in this race, and a bigger problem may be Schiaparelli, bred for the trip and already a three-time Group-1 winner abroad, though he’s a bit quirky, could do with some rain and it’s a bit late in his career to decide that a middle-distance horse is, in fact, a stayer. Mourilyan got the trip in Dubai but hasn’t won anything decent away from Nad Al Sheba.  4.00 Goodwood (Lillie Langtry Stakes): Suailce, in the colours of the Irish President, tries to steal the Goodwood thunder in Galway Festival week but is living off her Irish Cesarewitch win when she carried only 8st. 1lb.and has since failed at Listed and Group-3 level. Five-year-olds have a good record and Princess Taylor improved her position behind Cassique Lady from fifth to second in two consecutive Listed races. Starfala, who split them at Haydock, finished well in the Group-2 Lancashire Oaks on the same course last time out. The consistent Victoria Montoya is back to her optimum trip. Three-year-olds have won three times in the races six-year history from 20 runners and Lady Artemisia is from the Sariska stable but there’s nothing much in the form book yet, so a bet would be a gamble when the trainer himself admits this is a tough call.
