Monday 6 July DAQMAN  GOING FOR 10 IN A ROW: Daqman, whose record run of lays is 16, tries to extend his latest sequence to 10 at Ripon tonight. DUTCH COURAGE: He has to do a bit of dutching at Musselburgh this afternoon, because the weather is uncertain, with heavy showers forecast. SEVEN OUT OF NINE: Daqman is currently showing around 120 points profit from seven winning days out of nine. While we’re busy placing Sea The Stars in the half of fame, let’s not forget some less heralded heroes who have made up racing’s magic. So, happy birthday Jeff King. And thanks a lot, Le Garcon d’Or. King, 68 today, is a reminder of a professionalism that is too often overlooked in the clamour for champions. King was never champion jockey, but he was to jumps racing what Mick Kinane still is to the Flat: expertly professional and entirely reliable. Jeff King’s style was revered as the best, though he rode alongside Biddlecombe, Carberry, Francome and Mellor, to name but a few, as they say. He is a reminder, as they go odds on about Sea The Stars for every next race, that the greatest of champions is not invincible, since it was King who rode Dormant to defeat Arkle in the 1966 King George. And, if you think McCoy has been around a long time, he still has seven years to go to catch King. Le Garcon d’Or by a long way eclipses Eclipse, though at a different level: while the mighty progenitor of almost all modern thoroughbreds had 18 straight wins, some of them walk-overs and matches, Le Garcon d’Or (‘golden boy’) scored a record 34 in a 12-year career. He was trained by Jack Ormston, a former speedway-star buddy of my trainer, Jack Hardy (two wins at one Cheltenham Festival). Hardy gave me a tip that lasted years: ‘Whenever you see that Jack and I have runners at (certain) different meetings we like, we’re planning a double, so always have a bit each way.’ I say no more. My own tip from long range for the Le Garcon d’Or Handicap at Musselburgh (3.45) today is split your stakes between course-specialists Sandwith and Secret Venue. Secret Venue is a young improver up for a hat-trick on the course but seemingly needs the ground to stay firm, whereas Sandwith – three times a Musselburgh winner – could do with the heavy showers that are forecast. I dutched them at 5.3 ‘Secret’ and 5.9 ‘Sand’ on Betdaq this morning, opposing front-runners Raccoon - he hasn’t won off this high a mark for two years - and Buy On The Red, who’s only win over the minimum came in a ladies’ race when, as you’d expect, not a lot came at him from off the pace. I think the handicapper has finally caught up with Argentine. At Brighton, Orangeleg (3.00), from a yard that excels with runners first time in a handicap, is getting weight all round and, as I write, has place odds that get me most of my win stake back if I go each way. Sadly, there isn’t the quality of racing so far this week to hope to be sure of keeping my winning run going but at least there is a class-3 race at Ripon tonight (8.20). As I’ve said before, catching David Elsworth right is an art I’ve long given up in favour of evening classes in origami but the stats (he has a 50% record on the course) suggest that Devil You Know rates a bit each way at 7.2, as I write. At Windsor, I’m laying morning-favourite Resurge (8.00) and going for a double whammy via State Banquet, a much better animal than the bare form suggests. Resurge carries a penalty for running away with a race in which the favourite never really got involved. State Banquet ran up to Antinori first time back before that one was placed in a decent handicap at York. I can’t see Darryl Holland letting Resurge get away from him as the apprentices in second and third did on the course a week ago, particularly as Resurge has the steadier of 10 stone.
