DAQMAN on MONDAY

Monday 27 July DAQMAN  100 WINNING BETS: Daqman yesterday completed his latest century of winning bets in 43 days. His record is 26 days. DOUBLE WHAMMY: He landed his famous double whammy in the big Irish two-year-old race when he laid Walk On Bye (3rd 11-8) and named the winner, Alfred Nobel (won 5-4). ANOTHER SEQUENCE? Daqman, who completed 13 lays in a row a fortnight ago, is now back on a roll with two out of two. His record sequence is 16. LOOK OUT AT GOODWOOD as Daqman plots a win-win-win trading situation with one of tomorrow’s runners and spots a backers’ treat in store during the week. This is your wake-up call for Goodwood, as they queue up on Betdaq this morning to back Ballydoyle’s Rip Van Winkle in his Sussex Stakes match race with Ghanaati on Wednesday. But even a repeat of last year’s triple gold of Sussex, Nassau and Goodwood Cup wouldn’t be enough for Aidan O’Brien to close down Sir Michael Stoute’s lead in the British Flat-trainers’ table. That treble hadn’t been done since Henry Cecil in 1979, and Henry will provide the week’s tears if he can win a race this week, 30 years on, and another veteran, Clive Brittain, would bring on the dancing if he can follow up his 40-1 Saturday success. But I shall start my week with Stoute. His millions have achieved a return to his owners of £12,000 for every single race his horses have run. Of the other English trainers, Michael Bell is clear second best but with less than half Stoute’s return – just over £5,000 – and then come Gosden, Noseda, Cecil, Hills, and Haggas. The rest nowhere. Richard Hannon is second in the table for prizemoney won but averages little more than £2,000 a race, as you’d expect from a massive 600-odd runners (alongside Stoute’s carefully plotted 200 or so): Hannon’s is a shotgun approach yet he could pin down specific Goodwood pots this week with Monsieur Chevalier and Paco Boy. Not a single punter doubts that this is also Richard Fahey’s year: every backer applauds his season’s staggering level-stakes profit of nigh on 120 points from almost as many runners (570 or so) as Hannon. His Saturday winner, the seven-year-old Knot In Wood, is sure to be among the favourites for the weekend Stewards Cup but, be warned if you are studying the form in advance, that the race consistently goes to horses aged four and five, with Dandy Nicholls having the best record (two winners this century). The big mile handicap on Friday is an absolute backers’ treat if you bet to the draw: again you want an animal aged four or five but the open secret here is that every single winner this century has come from a stall higher than 15. So you need to be very quick off the mark with that click on the mouse because, as a result of the bias, the SP of the winner has dropped over that period from 12-1 to 10-1 and now to 5-1 best; most recently, we’ve had 5-1, 9-2 and 5-2. Clearly, spotting the potential gamble by grabbing early Betdaq value is going to be your best bet. So resist the nonsensical bookies’ list of prices (even ‘best odds’ this morning add up to 147%): wait for the decs and be ready for trading to open on the Daq. Start as you mean to go on with an overnight bet today on Harbinger for tomorrow’s Gordon Stakes; readers of this column should already have taken 12.0 Harbinger on Betdaq for the St Leger. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, of course. You are already in clover with the Leger bet (I see he’s only 7-1 in a place with the bookies) and your gambit should now be to use your ‘overs’ to buy some Harbinger trades tonight for tomorrow’s race to win enough to cover your St Leger stake and more (I think he’ll be very short on the day tomorrow). Then, when you’ve counted your winnings from Tuesday’s race, and watched Harbinger’s Doncaster odds plummet, lay off some of the Leger bet. These two trading steps could create a win-win-win position; at the very least, if Harbinger wins on Tuesday, you should end up with cash in hand plus a ‘free’ bet on the final Classic. Nearly half the successful horses (15) at Glorious Goodwood last year were Irish bred, and the meeting opened with a 25-1 winner. You might as well have gone to Galway instead! Dermot Weld should get his usual Stunning (View) start there today, though Noel Meade has ‘pinched’ Weld’s most successful Galway rider, Nina Carberry, for Fisher Bridge (7.00); I’ll bet each way at 13.8 on Betdaq this morning that the horse has been ‘got up’ especially for the race. At Yarmouth, James Fanshawe has his reputation on the line to get a win out of Alvee (5.00): she cost a staggering 900,000gns as a youngster and has so far earned £703 for an AW third and £202 for a turf-maiden fourth. The filly has been working well for some time now with Alsace Lorraine and Sphere, and looked good over nine furlongs on the Limekilns on Friday morning. She’s stepped up to the kind of trip that should suit, as a half-sister to Alleviate and Allegretto, and I’ll have a bit each way, betting at 5.8 on the Daq that she will at least pass the £1,000-in-winnings mark!
