IRELAND'S EYE
We are spoilt for choice today with a brace of meetings at Perth and Stratford in England and National Hunt enthusiasts are also offered a double helping in Ireland with Kilbeggan and Listowel.
A former decent ex Irish trained decent hurdler can make a winning bow over fences at Stratford whilst we have a long priced selection in a Listowel hunter chase.
Samovar (9/4-2/1) our reserve choice was our only success on a light betting day for us yesterday with another second choice Alpine Glade (7/4-6/5) having to settle for second in the Tramore opener.
The Irish should be on the mark at Perth today where they hold definite claims in several contests but it is the 2-50 event – a 2m 4 ½ handicap chase where we turn to for our best bet on the card. Though Gordon Elliotts 7yo He’s A Hotshot is fairly exposed over fences he looks to be going over a suitable trip here and will definitely appreciate the fast ground and with Jason Maguire in the plate he could beat the Tony Martin trained Dream Champion whilst Michael Hourigans Tubber Gael Holly could be revitalized by the first time blinkers off a lower weight.
Wexford trainer Paul Nolan could be on the mark in the opening 2m 4f maiden hurdle at Kilbeggan at 2-55 with the 6yo Captain Nash. A previous good winner of a Summerhill point last season from the subsequent Paul Nicholls trained hurdle winner The Gossmoor Yank he has shown promise in bumpers and made a pleasing maiden hurdle debut at Tramore six weeks ago. He looks ideally suited by yielding or better ground so any more drying out of the ground will clearly benefit the son of Dushyantor and the trip could be right ‘up his alley’ and he can make a winning impression over timer here under 3lb claimer Alan Cawley with Gerbera looking a likely danger at bigger odds.
Though there is a big field of hopefuls set to face the starter in the 2m 4f hc hurdle at Listowel at 3-15 it may not prove as competitive as first impressions might imply. Though the recent Cork winner Cluain Cearbain is likely to figure off a 6lb higher mark for his distance win and the Charlie Swan trained Ella Watson would have prospects on her fair fifth in a competitive Gowran handicap over the trip last time a tentative vote goes to the more unexposed George Travis. This seven year old son of Supreme Leader is the winner of three points on a testing surface and looks to be on a fair mark here though his recent form is nothing to ‘write home about’. However he has been competing in better events and will be suited by trip/ground here and with Brian Carey taking off a valuable 7lbs he gets the vote to beat Cluain Cearbain and Ella Watson.
Dessie Hughes yard have been in fine form this season and he can add another winner to his tally following the 3-25 at Kilbeggan – a 2m 3f hurdle. His charge here is the formerly frustrating Superior Ben who finally opened his account in comfortable fashion on testing ground at Clonmel over two months ago from admittedly ordinary opposition. However that success could prove a prelude for further glory and the 6yo can land this contest under Rodger Loughran at the expense of the Willie Mullins trained Otay Kawn and recent Ballinrobe scorer Johnny Kilawee.
The ex Gordon Elliott trained Harper Valley has done us a favour in the past and the 5yo could repeat the dose on his chase debut at Stratford at 4-30. Though his style of jumping was far from perfect over the minor obstacles the 140 rated hurdler should carry too many guns for the opposition in this 2m 4f novice under Dominic Elsworth if he takes to this game. The trip should not pose a problem and the ground looks ideal for the son of Val Royal here and he can beat the more experienced pair of Rien A Perdre and Font who have to give the selection 12lbs and 6lbs respectively whilst the claims of the Johnjo O’Neill runner Donaldson should not be overlooked following his sound round of victory when scoring at Towcester a month ago.
Three previous hunter chase winners face the starter in the 3m hunter event on the Listowel card at 4-45 with impressive Cork scorer Greenfield Noel, Westmeath Bachelor and Kennel Hill hoping to add to his recent Downpatrick success. Despite the claims of two of these runners (Westmeath Bachelor overlooked on this occasion) the winner may come from the less exposed and unpenalised runners. Top Twig from the David Christy yard has been in fine winning form ‘between the flags’ this season but the 10yo has always just struggled in this sphere in recent times and though Willie Mullins unexposed Boxer Georg merits respect his easy win in an ordinary Donore contest leaves him with something to do here. A sporting vote goes to the John Gleeson trained Wild Cat Mountain who has landed tow ‘touches’ for the yard in this his first season and showed plenty of ability in landing a most competitive Athlacca winners race recently from reliable yardstick Puddencullinan and with Brian O’Connell taking off a valuable 3lbs he just get the nod over Greenfield Noel and Kennel Hill here.

IRELAND'S EYE
Next week sees the flat extravaganza which is Royal Ascot and starting on Tuesday right through to the weekend we will be pinpointing the main Irish hopes in the Group races and more importantly we will hope to eke out the value wagers in some of the tricky handicaps.
Today is a quite day for us with just the Tramore flat card to whet our appetite but we do have a decent priced course specialist selection in one of the handicaps.
Yesterday proved another profitable day with a fine double at Tramore with Thelobstercatcher (3-11/4) beating out saver Warhead (3-11/4) in a maiden hurdle and former pointer Banna Beach (10/3) landing the handicap chase though our nap Fruitfull Citizen (7/2) could only finish third at Towcester.
The opener on the Tramore card at 2-15 is an interesting maiden for lady riders over a mile and a half where the Jimmy Mangan trained mare Alpine Glade (Nina Carberry) should go close to following up her course bumper success on the back of some decent efforts over flights of late. However we will take on the Mangan 7yo here with the younger Fahy runner Azana whose fourth to the subsequent Leopardstown winner Johann Zoffany (received 7lbs) in a Naas 10f maiden two weeks ago reads well in the context of a race of this type. Though the dual National Hunt winner is some way behind Alpine Glade on hurdle ratings he could be more suited by the trip here and is given a tentative vote to overturn the favourite here under Katie Walsh.
Though the 2-45 on the Tramore card – a mile and three quarter maiden has only eight runners there are four with definite chances of taking the leading honours. John Oxx’s Samovar should start a short priced favourite here on his efforts to date having failed to win when installed favourite the last twice over a mile but the 3yo may be suited by the step in trip here. However there could be more value in siding with the once raced Weld runner Extreme Impact with Shane Gorey taking off 3lbs possibly able to build on his fairly promising third on heavy ground at Navan nearly two weeks ago. Better ground and a step up in trip could see the son of Rock Of Gibraltar take the spoils from the more exposed Samovar.
There are plenty of possibilities in the 1m 6f handicap at Tramore this afternoon at 4-20 but in an open contest we will side with course and distance scorer Monahullan Prince who boasts a decent track record which is always an asset around this circuit. The Ger Keane trained 8yo has been running quite well on easier ground of late and his fourth behind Dafarabad at Killarney over two miles and one on penultimate start gives the Rory Cleary ridden gelding a decent chance of landing the spoils here. Celtic Soprano could be next best while the veteran Kahuna could also make a bold bid from the front.
ADVICE
3pt win AZANA 2-15 Tramore
2pt win (saver) ALPINE GLADE 2-15 Tramore
3pt win EXTREME IMPACT 2-45 Tramore
2pt win (saver) SAMOVAR 2-45 Tramore
4pt win (nap) MONAHULLAN PRINCE 4-50 Tramore

IRELAND'S EYE
It was a day to forget yesterday with our nap Mizen Raven (5/4 morn-10/11) getting well turned over and the well supported Dafarabad (5-7/2) also finishing runner up and Jurado Express failing to deliver in the hunter chase at Wetherby to give us a rare winnerless day.
We will be on the comeback trail today where our focus of attention will lie on Tramore and Towcester this evening where we hope to collect with an ex pointer/hunter chaser off a low weight in a handicap chase at the latter fixture and a couple of point winners can do the business at Tramore in a hurdle and chase.
Wade Farm Billy is likely to go off a short priced favourite to land the opener on the Towcester card tonight at 6-30 which is a two mile novice hurdle. A reproduction of his Kempton and Wincanton runner up placings should suffice here but he the Moore runner is becoming expensive to follow and though he looks to be going the right way round (has hung when going left handed) we will take him on with the unexposed and appropriately named Give Me A Chance. The Evan Williams 5yo has showed up well enough in a couple of fair bumpers without getting into the money but he may provide the answer here at decent odds on his hurdling bow with Paul Moloney doing the steering.
Willie Murphys yard were on the mark recently and they can add to that winner in the 6-45 at Tramore this evening with the ex winning pointer Thelobstercatcher in a 2m 4f maiden hurdle. The 5yo son of Silver Partriarch just lost out to the useful Realt Dubh in one of his point starts at Dromoland and he has shown a decent level of form in five starts over hurdles to date and he was far from disgraced in taking third to the decent Elyaadi over an extended two miles at Clonmel last time following a somewhat disappointing effort at Thurles. However better ground and a step up in trip should be ‘just the ticket’ here and the in form Niall Madden can guide the grey to success over another former point winner Warhead.
Banna Beach has been slightly disappointing since sent to the track following his win in a Bennettsbridge 4yo maiden point a couple of years ago but he sprang a surprise with an easy win in a Downpatrick two mile and two handicap hurdle three weeks ago. He may have been suited by the sharp contours of that track there and he is set for a similar task at tonights seaside venue and could be on a favourable mark in his fourth start over fences here – is rated 12lbs below his hurdle mark. Though he has shown little over fences his point to point experience should stand to him and the trip/ground look ideal and off 10-2 he could give Niall Madden a double on the card in the 2m handicap chase at 7-45 at Tramore with the exasperating top weight Our Symphony looking likely to make a bold bid from the front looking his most likely danger.
Course form at Tramore usually gives an edge and there must be a good chance that Phillip Rothwells durable and consistent Wicklow Lad can land his second course success in the 8-15 – a 2m 6f novice chase. The 5yo does have to prove his stamina over the trip having gained his teo latest wins over two miles but he looks to be in the form of his life and the opposition here do not look that tough. Though he has scored on extremes of ground he is arguably best on the prevailing good ground and he could prove too strong for the Christy Roche trained Tooman Lane who will be suited by the step up in trip and he could build on his initial starts over the major obstacles.
Formerly with Eugene O’Sullivan the former Bartlemy point winner Fruitfull Citizen is finally getting her act together ‘between the flags’ in England with the 8yo landing four in recent times. Indeed the daughter of Anshan has even made the breakthrough in the hunter chase sphere recently with a clear cut success over 3m ½ at Towcster in admittedly a grief strewn contest. However it was a fast time and it can pay dividends to follow in form mares and with Lucy Jones taking off 7lbs in tonight course and distance handicap chase at 8-30 the progressive mare is running off a feather weight of 9-7 and she could put that concession to good use to dispose of her main rival – another recent course and distance scorer in Chorizo in receipt of 21lbs for the Goldsworthy yard.

ED CHAMBERLIN'S WEEKEND BETTING PREVIEW
The football season comes to an end tomorrow with the FA Cup Final and it would be nice to end the campaign with a profitable last game. Well, goals have been in short supply in recent finals and there is no reason to think that tomorrow’s clash between Chelsea and Everton will be any different. In fact, half of the last 14 finals have seen no more than one goal scored in regular time, with 11 featuring two goals or less.
Looking at the two sides closely and the argument for supporting a low scoring game gathers pace. Everton have faced Big Four opposition 14 times in Premier League and FA Cup competition since 2008, and their 3-1 defeat at the Emirates last year is the only time there have been more than two goals. Interestingly, eight of those 14 matches saw one or fewer goals, as have all three of the Toffees’ encounters with Chelsea in the past 18 months. Since the start of 2008, Chelsea have met top-eight, non-Big Four opposition 10 times and eight of those encounters finished with two or fewer goals, and half with no more than one. Of course, these two sides also met in a two-legged Carling Cup semi-final in 2008, where only a ninetieth minute own-goal by Joleyn Lescott at Stamford Bridge preventing two further ‘under’ matches.
Therefore, I’ll be backing under 2.5 goals on the Daq at as close to 1.7 as I can get and I’m also going to have a crack at both sides to go in goalless at the break at around the 2.45 mark. That’s been the score in seven of the last 15 finals which suggests the price should be closer to evens.
The outright result looks really tricky to call and it will take a braver man than me to smash into Chelsea to win in 90 minutes at a best priced 1.8 on Betdaq. Since the 1992/93 cup final (the last to go to a replay) the higher ranked side has kept 12 clean sheets in 15 finals, winning-to-nil on 10 of these occasions. Therefore, there is an argument to suggest that if you fancy Chelsea to win, then back them to do so 1-0 (around 7.0) and 2-0 (around 8.0). However, my only bet in that market will be a small bet on no goalscorer in the game at a whopping 10.0 on the Daq.
The Derby is just over a week away and Epsom held its annual ‘Breakfast with the Stars’ at the course yesterday. John Oxx, John Gosden, Willie Haggas, Mick Channon and Michael Bell were just some of the trainers on hand to give out the latest news on their Classic hopefuls, while Aidan O’Brien and Jim Bolger both spoke to Clare Balding via telephone link up.
I wasn’t there but from a betting perspective, the only things to report to you are that Jim Bolger will run his Oh Goodness Me in next Friday’s Oaks and she’ll certainly start shorter than the 34.0 available on the Daq today. I expect her to be nearer half that price which means if you back her now, you’ll be able to lay her back at a much shorter price this time next week and have a free bet.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s action and the main race of day comes from Haydock in the shape of the Timeform Jury Stakes run at 3.05pm. Now, the one that immediately shines out like a beacon is the Sir Michael Stoute trained Main Aim. The four-year-old went into plenty of notebooks when bolting up in a handicap at Newbury last time and looks sure to go close now stepping into Group 3 company. Asset, Arabian Gleam and Beacon Lodge are all respected, but I confidently expect Main Aim to take this on his way to the Group One Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot next month.
Elsewhere on the Haydock card, I expect Fullandby at a decent price to take a hand in the opener at 2.05pm, while I’m also keen on Amerigo off top weight in the last at 4.45pm. Michael Jarvis has opted to run the selection in handicap company rather than a Listed event and that decision should pay off. The drying ground will suit and it’s tough to find anything good enough to beat him.
Look out for the Richard Hannon trained newcomer Fremont in Goodwood’s 3.55pm tomorrow. The stable’s juveniles are just about to hit top form and this fellow is expected to go pretty close at the first time of asking. The same yard are also responsible for Sequillo in the 4.10pm contest at that same rack this afternoon. I’m prepared to give him another chance today and reckon he my go close at a decent price. He’s currently trading at around the 21.0 mark.
Best of luck!

IRELAND'S EYE
A brace of winners yesterday at Huntingdon and Tipperary courtesy of Dead Or Alive (9/2-7/2) and The Wandering Man (9/4-7/4) kept our fine run going and today we have a couple of likely winners in a couple of the BETDAQ sponsored races earlier on the Southwell card.
In addition we could have an Irish trained winner at Cartmel and we have a couple of value bets in a handicap chase and maiden hurdle at Punchestown this evening.
A 2m 6s mares maiden hurdle at 2-50 at Cartmel looks likely to be an Irish benefit with the four leaders in the market representing Irish yards. Although James Lambes recent Killarney third Quivvy Bridge is entitles to go off favourite here under ‘Choc’ Thornton she could be vulnerable to an improving pointer in the shape of the Gavin Cromwell trained three time point winner Eastern Surprise. The 6yo has won on varying grounds and she made a decent return to action at Loughanmore when finishing runner up in a competitive mares race and the Denis O’Regan ridden mare could prove the more progressive and land the spoils at the expense of the market leader.
Zabenz looks impossible to oppose in the 3m 2f hunter chase at Cartmel at 4-35 for the Philip Hobbs yard with the trainers daughter in the plate despite his less than perfect jumping record of late and in the past. However the 12yo looks ‘head and shoulders’ above the opposition and though the price will be restrictive he can account for Waynesworld who has indicated that return to form is imminent on his recent effort.
The Conyngham Cup at 5-10 is typically an open handicap chase for qualified riders and tonights opener over 3m 1f at Punchestown is a typically tough renewal with several in form runners in the line up.
Kieran Purcells dual point winner has proved a goos servant to us in landing a couple of hunter chases in the interim and though the unexposed 6yo has to shoulder 11-13 here he does have the useful claim of Joe Burns and he could make it a hat trick of successes and follow up his Down Royal win on a surface which he seems to thrive on. However there are plenty of live dangers with Rockers Field (could do with more testing ground) and recent clear cut winner Goinforporter leading the list of possibles for the top prize but the two who could prove the main threats could be the Christy Roche trained Ah Ya Boy Ya who shapes as if he is crying out for a step up in trip and the bottom weight and former point winner Lion Valley (if he gets into the race) from the Seamus Braddish yard who will be suited by a stamina test.
Total Excitement looks likely to start favourite for the 2 mile maiden hurdle at 7-15 at Punchestown on the strength of his fifth placing behind Cousin Vinny at Leopardstown but Tommy Coopers 7yo has never been the easiest to predict.
There could be better value here in siding with the Seamus Fahy runner Get It Sorted who has been running quite well in a couple of decent course bumpers on final couple of starts under his seven pound claimer and he gets a tentative vote to make a winning impression over hurdles. Others to enter calculations are the Mouse Morris trained Elysian Road who hinted at promise last time at his venue over 2 furlongs further and the good Loughanmore point winner Mark Me Up from the Rothwell yard.
Cannon Fire has proved the bridesmaid on seven occasions from eleven starts over fences and the Evan Williams trained 8yo should go close to opening his account in the 3m 2f BETDAQ novice chase at Southwell. However it could pay richer dividends to side with the former point and hurdle winner Dunkelly Castle on his chase debut and though the 5yo has not been that fluent over hurdles it is often the case that horses treat the larger obstacles with greater respect. Norma Twomeys charge with Mark Grant on board is given the vote to beat the luckless Cannon Fire whilst a return to form for another point winner Black Anshan cannot be ruled out.
The Tim Vaughan trained ex pointer Tigu made a good impression when landing a less competitive handicap at Fakenham last time and off a 7lb higher mark the 8yo will be expected to go close in the 2m 5 1/2f hc chase at 7-30 at Southwell – another BETDAQ sponsored event. However the ‘Dickie’ Johnson ridden gelding is opposed here with the Johnjo O’Neill trained Charmahal who scored his only success in a Ballinrobe bumper for Willie Lanigan in 2006. However though he has not added to that success he has been running sound races in better class events over fences and in receipt of 7lbs from the favourite here he could give Tony McCoy another win on his seasonal debut at a trip and ground which should suit.
