Thursday 4 December Arrayan ‘wouldn’t need to be a superstar to figure’ in the opener at Wincanton, says the Racing Post spotlight analysis; but past results of the race and the reputation of today’s filly favourite suggest he will have to be just that to win. Two of the three most recent winners, Twist Magic and Ashkazar, have taken high rank (Imperial Cup winner Ashkazar is currently one of the favourites for a big hurdle coming up soon at Ascot). The hot-pot today, Paul Nicholls’ Pepite De Soleil, is already as short as 16-1 with bookmakers for the Triumph Hurdle (23.0 on Betdaq) and already a hurdles winner at Auteuil, whereas Arrayan has been restricted to the French Flat. There will be plenty of professionals ‘buying money’ at long odds-on today for ‘Pepite’ to release Sam Thomas from his riding nightmare, and I make her a banker in my Daq Multiples. For those Francophobes who have finally got used to the word ‘petite’, please concentrate the mind: the filly is called ‘Pepite’, which is a Belgian name not a French adjective. You’ll certainly need to concentrate the mind on the rest of the day at Wincanton, which is hard work for the punter as well as being frosty early, cold all day, and with heavy rain forecast, though the worst you and I will suffer with Betdaq up is mild caffeine deprivation if the tea-bags run out. Those who are doubting Thomas have shunned him in the Beginners’ Chase: his odds-on-forecast mount, Lightning Strike, has been overtaken as market leader in Betdaq trades by support for Tarotino and is better than evens as I write. Maybe that will tempt you to go for Thomas but Tarotino has experience over fences and, though Lightning Strike was a classy hurdler, the bigger question mark for me today is his trainer not his jockey: Venetia Williams is going through what racing people kindly call a ‘quiet spell’ with only one win from 31 runners in the last fortnight. Ms Williams has a similar chance with Ping Pong Siviola (3.50) but Mighty Moose was all the rage this morning and has moved into the hot seat in another favourites flip-flop. I think you have a two-horse race here; one of this pair will ping it as there’d be a bit of a ‘pong’ if the prize went to one of Bawn Boy, Celtic Son or Ede’iff, who all pulled up last time out and, on their best form, would prefer a sounder surface. Charlie Mann currently has a 50% win-and-place strike-rate and Poseidon’s Secret (2.20) was value each way at 20.0 on Betdaq this morning: he made all in his last two-mile hurdle on the soft and is regarded as tough enough to have been sent to Pardubicke. Taken together, course-and-distance winners Maori Legend and Wizard Of Edge (2.50) look a powerful dutching combination, getting nearly a stone and more from the other fancied runners on this testing terrain: stakes of 6pts and 4pts respectively on Betdaq this morning would get me close to 20pts profit whichever one won. At Leicester, Dominic Elsworth, involved in a double for Oliver Sherwood on Tuesday, can start the day with a win on Mvuto (1.10) whose able trainer, Lucy Wadham, has found a field full of sorry maidens and platers for the filly’s first hurdle. Elsworth takes over for Sherwood on Pacco (2.10) but there are four or five sound chances here; in fact, there are seven young bloods in it, apart from old warhorses like Master Papa, who’s been off a long time but always went well fresh. All right, Bill - don’t keep texting me – I’ll mention the Marketwatch ‘tip’ (at least one punter is happy about the new Racing Post website): Bill had Heavenly Chorus (won 8-1) yesterday from among their early top three ‘best backed’. Today, early doors, they mainly concerned Sandown at the weekend but Augustus John (7.50) and One Cool Mission (8.20), both at Great Leighs, were highest of the day’s runners; they are at 18.5 and 9.4 on Betdaq as I write, and it’s certainly intriguing that an evening meeting should figure in morning punts. But ‘Mission’ will have to go a bit to stop Timeless Dream; she’s one for the Daq Multiples after working well recently following a break since her second at Redcar when well supported. | |
