DAQMAN on Friday

Friday 31 October EIGHT IN A ROW: Daqman yesterday opposed a Paul Nicholls hot-pot, Predateur (2nd 5-4 fav), to land his eighth consecutive winning lay; that makes 11 out of the last 12, with the target always forecast favourites. His banker, well supported as usual from odds against in the morning, was Bakbenscher (won 8-11), and one of his each-way bets, Dazzling Bay (3rd 18-1) was placed at big odds. Daqman is now on 56 winning bets in 18 days, with a 100 in 30 days required to smash his own century-of-wins record, which has been broken five times, as he’s brought the ‘ton’ tumbling to 39 days (twice), 38, 32 and recently 31 days. As ever today, Daqman finds the most significant races of the day: a maiden on the Flat where a horse from a stable in Classic-chasing form is 10.5 on Betdaq, and an Irish hurdle where potential champions clash. The 2009 Derby clock has wound down to the last few ticks of thoroughbred time, and the dream is barely alive. Yet Kris Kin, the 2003 winner, broke his maiden at Doncaster as late as 25th October and, with  nine days left of the current season, a son of Giants Causeway bids to book his Epsom place in a similar event at Newmarket this afternoon. It would normally be insignificant; the two-year-old championships that usually decide the winner have come and gone, but that’s the whole point - Hilbre Point (1.15 Newmarket) to be precise – because, from out of nowhere, the Brian Meehan stable has this month come to the fore of Classic potential by saddling the Racing Post Trophy winner and third, Crowded House and Shanky Biscuit, and Hilbre Point has worked well with both, as well as with another Manton star, Ra Junior. Out of Oaks winner, Lady Carla, the Merseyside-owned Hilbre Point is a son of Giants Causeway, who in his short stud career has got winners of the French Derby (Shamardal) and Newmarket 2,000 Guineas (Footstepsinthesand). Whether he’s good enough to add to the list is doubtful; the stats say that it is long odds on that we’ve already seen the Derby winner and don’t know its name. But, if O’Brien or Stoute had recently saddled first and third in the Racing Post Trophy, and the form had been franked in the Breeders Cup, their maiden gallops companions would be very short prices today and for the last nine days. Hilbre Point is 10.5 on Betdaq this morning as I write. I will be summing up the Classic scene for next year at the end of the season and, about the same time, listing my horses to follow for high honours over jumps. Today decides whether Cork All Star and Jered (2.40 Down Royal) feature on that list. I hate these early head-to-heads: we had one in the race last year when Aitmatov beat Bobs Pride out of sight; I got all excited about Aitmatov but he wasn’t the Champion Hurdle material I thought. Cork All Star has had a prep run on the Flat but Aitmatov, like Iktitaf the the year before, is trained by Noel Meade, so we can assume that Jered is also fit to do himself justice today for the stable’s hat-trick bid. He was favourite over Cork All Star when an easy winner at Punchestown in the Spring but had earlier trailed in fifth with Cork All Star second in the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse. The differences between the two races are that Jered’s defeat at Fairyhouse was on the sort of soft-to-heavy ground we’re going to get at Down Royal today but, on the other hand, he was still an emerging horse then and would have been a challenger but for a mistake at the last. It’s a fascinating contest this afternoon, and if both riders, McCoy and Geraghty, have the gloves off, it could be a bruiser that will go all the way to the bell. I’m going to ‘cheat.’ I shall put both horses in my Daq Multiples (with a couple of hot hurdles hopes at Wetherby), so that I win whichever one delivers the killer punch. A winner by a knockout would be Champion Hurdle material indeed. Before I leave Down Royal, I’m told to have a pound in the last (4.10) on the superbly-named Voler La Vedette (‘to steal the show’), a filly by Kings Theatre out of Steel Grey Lady. Meanwhile, back at Headquarters, Formula (12.05 Newmarket) is a value trade at 9.0 on Betdaq as I write. Early in the season, my man in the long grass saw the Stormin Fever colt ‘laughing all over’ (sic) Richmond Stakes winner Prolific in his homework. Formula has fought back from injury to regain his position on the gallops, working within a length of Horris Hill runner-up Bonnie Charlie. Swiss Diva deserves to be favourite but I can’t go along with the early-doors support for Godolphin’s Emirates Sports; he hasn’t shown enough on the gallops, though is another Derby entrant with something to prove as his career is launched late in the day like Hilbre Point’s. I was also inclined against Emirates Roadshow (12.40), the morning 7-4 favourite, who let his form with Ra Junior down last time, but I’m struggling for one to beat it. Ithinkbest may be good enough but my man says that, on gallops at least, the colt is nothing to shout home about, while Abulharith has been going easily at home with recent winners but layers can’t give him away this morning: he’s still ‘walking’ even though 46.0 as I write. For me, the answer is Jesse James, win and place: his Doncaster debut in a strong maiden was full of promise, despite his having to race alone down the middle of the track. The fillies’ Listed is the best race all day: an absolute cracker of proven form (Pennys Gift) against improvers (Flame Of Ireland, Miss Eze) with, thrown in for good measure, an enigma, Art Princess, trained by Barry Hills. Art Princess is hardly an enigma in the form sense; she looks well exposed but, remember, Barry Hills ‘missed out’ the middle of the season and his horses have just come good again; he has had half a dozen winners from the first four races of this Newmarket meeting in the last decade, and won this Listed last year with Spinning Lucy at 10-1. But is Art Princess good enough? I wouldn’t put you off her, and I shall put Pennys Gift in my small-stakes Multiples, but my instinct always is to go for the improvers: Flame Of Ireland (19.0 at time of writing) and Miss Eze (8.4), a typical Geoff Wragg late-developing filly, could be ‘anything’. I find that catching David Elsworth’s winners is like fielding on the boundary with the sun in your face: they come along without your knowing it, and you’re only aware of them from the roar of the crowd. It was no help going down to the gallops in the Whitsbury days: ‘I like that one,” I would say. The famous ‘Elzie’ burr would drawl back beside me: ‘Do you now?’, leaving me wondering whether I’d just picked out a potential Derby winner or spotted the assistant-trainer’s hack! As an Indian Ridge on soft ground today, Elsworth’s James Pollard (4.05) appeals, particularly with David Probert up.  ‘James’ was never going to be a top-of-the-ground AW horse, surely; the stats tell me that Indian Ridge has had only 100 or so winners from more than 1100 AW runners. I also note that James Pollard was withdrawn from this week’s horses-in-training sales. I think that’s significant, Mr. Elsworth. (‘Do you now?’)

DAQMAN on Thursday

Thursday 30 October Daqman held the layers to ransom yesterday with winners which included Worth A King’s (won 15-2). He named just two races for quality across five cards, and had the winner of both: Jedi (won 10-3) and Forpadytheplasterer (won 9-10), adding Orbitor (won 5-2) and winners in his Daq Multiples. To lay or not to lay? Daqman decides between two disappointing horses, Custody and Predateur, as he guards his precious 78% strike rate with four lays left to the 200. Which is the fancied AW raider trading 27.0 on Betdaq this  morning? Which is the ‘most exciting hurdles prospect’ on which he goes banker at Stratford? Read all about it. What do you do when you have a horse that’s impossible to deal with, for one reason or another? In the case of Donavitum, you cut ‘him’ down to size and ‘it’, as a gelding, becomes one of the world’s champion two-year-olds.  Such a transformation is very rare if not unique, but Sir Michael Stoute must have looked on wistfully as Donativum won at Santa Anita on Saturday night, recalling his own decision to call for the ‘cut’ in the (nut)case of Custody. Stoute maintains an astonishing 45% win-and-place strike rate (slightly down on last year’s 47%, in fact) despite the Custodys of this world and, indeed, has managed to get him placed three times, quirks and all. I don’t recall another trainer being so close to his horses since Ryan Price; Stoute admits to 99% total dedication (he, or was it I, purposely left one per cent to accommodate his love of cricket). And it’s the unkindest cut of all to have the son of an Oaks winner (Shahtoush) entered for the Derby and this is what happens: punters having caught a cold with him at 4-6 favourite in a little race at Pontefract, opposed him at Newcastle – out to 2-1 though still favourite – and he hung away from the whip, head held high, and ‘got stuffed’ again. Incredibly, and somewhat ironically, Custody has on his CV a second to the Racing Post Trophy winner, Crowded House, now regarded as the top juvenile colt because Donativum is excluded on the basis of what is missing from his make-up! Today, for the Cartier/Racing Post Awards voting, neither Crowded House nor Donativum is considered in the top four two-year-olds on their points-for-performance basis; to point up the absurdity of these ‘awards’, I only need to tell you that Ravens Pass is third best three-year-old colt, 22 points behind Henrythenavigator though he’s now overtaken that one by beating him in the QE2 and the Breeders Cup. Back to Custody (2.10 Lingfield): he ran up to Crowded House on his only appearance on a man-made surface and behaved well enough that day at Kempton in September: will you remember that as he lines up this afternoon? Or do you want to be released from custody? Between the ex-colt and final ignominy today is a visor, and that’s another high percentage of Sir Michael Stoute’s: his skill with the first-time application of  ‘blinds’ . I’ve laid 196 horses, most of them favourite, in the past year (come November 5th) and been right 153 times. I need four more correct (i.e. losers) to claim a better-than-78% record after 200 bets. I was going to lay Custody today. At 4-6, yes. At 2-1, maybe. But, you know what, I think they’ll all desert him just when he feels at home on the surface and with the visor working, and he’ll start at 3-1 or more and run well in an event won twice from three runners by Sir Michael. We’ve all had Custody pie in our faces. With this ‘horse’, it’s a case of how much egg there is in it! My first choice for the race is Ajjaadd; slowly away and ran far too green on the debut, he has improved the colloquial ‘ton’ at home and drew clear of Tuesday’s Godolphin winner Al Mamoom in a work-out on Saturday morning. I have Custody to thank for getting 3.5 about Ajjaadd (with Custody 3.95). At these prices, you can dutch or you can back Ajjaad with a saver on Custody and watch a most interesting race. Godolphin also has Suba (1.40) in with a big shout: green first time and with conditions against her more recently, she should now pay her way though I see that My Verse is stronger in the market as I write. From a family that has done well for Godolphin, Suba is half-sister to top-class miler Dubawi and her ‘grandma’ (by Dancing Brave) was half-sister to Derby winner High Rise. Similarly, Jarvis should know what he’s got with My Verse, whose dam was half-sister to the stable’s Irish Derby runner-up Morshdi. The two fillies’ Listed races are well placed in the calendar for breeder and punter alike, a late hand-out of black type and two seemingly open betting contests: but, in fact, three-year-olds have won both races every time they’ve been run. That reduces the runners by 40% and presents the backer this morning with 43% and 59% underround ‘books’, translating the trades available as I write. In other words, you can back all the three-year-olds and make a handsome profit. But stats anoraks and born losers beware: sometime there will be a blip and an older horse will prevail, so try to build an error factor into your bets. For my part, I’ve checked out the ratings and, in the first Listed event, only Shabiba (2.40) is already on a par with the older horses: I’ll buy that 7.8 I see on Betdaq. The second Listed ‘leg’ is set up for Armure (3.10), three out of three on Polytrack and dropping back from a Group-2 attempt on Turf. Shaded Edge (4.10) looks plotted to win the boys’ race for William Carson, grandson of Laughing Willie. He’s now dropped below his winning rating here last season after three late-summer runs. Tim Easterby is down from the North for his first visit to Great Leighs with Top Bid (7.20) dropped 15lb by the handicapper for a quiet season and Dazzling Bay (8.20) 16lb below his old winning rating, although both runs back can be ignored for extremes of going (one firm, the other heavy). At 27.0 and 15.5 respectively on Betdaq as I write. Bakbenscher (4.20 Stratford) is described by Alan King as perhaps his most exciting hurdles prospect and, with West End King’s stable out of form, he’s my banker. Kia Kaha (1.50) is a half-brother to Missed That, a smart novice-chaser who set up a sequence for Willie Mullins in 2005-6. Kia Kaha goes well fresh and is my choice in a head to head with Paul Nicholls’ Predateur. Predateur was unreliable last season; that was put down to breathing problems and he’s had the op but I wouldn’t want to see him in a fight first time back if I were Nicholls, and Kia Kaha showed battling qualities when he won a good Cheltenham novice hurdle last season. Kia Kaha is trading 6.5 on Betdaq this morning with Predateur a short-priced favourite. The script writes itself: here we go for a Double Whammy. * Sales update on your old favourite horses. Would you believe it! The 2007 Lincoln winner Very Wise was sold to Roger Teal for only 800gns.

Alan McInally's weekend preview

The early evening kick off at White Hart Lane is a simply fantastic fixture and I for one believe the almost mystical powers of Harry Redknapp will prevent league leaders Liverpool from leaving with the three points.  The incredible fightback of his new side at Arsenal will put a huge injection of confidence into the whole club and that combined with the stuttering nature of Liverpool make me want to lay the Scousers on the "Daq".  The current 2.14 is simply too short for a side who are riding their luck and grinding out results at present and Spurs may well be celebrating a victory if their talented side can put it all together.

The second leg of my three for the weekend is a supremely confident tip of Middlebrough to add to the current woes of West Ham at The Riverside.  Gareth Southgate's men could not come into the game on the back of a better result after disposing of dangerous Man City on Wednesday night while the same cannot be said of the Hammers.  Gianfranco Zola is finding life tough in the Premier League and his side have lost four on the bounce in an alarming slide.  The long journey to a cold North East is not the place where things will turn around and at 11/10 on Betdaq I expect the layers to be paying out.

By all accounts Sunderland were horrible at Stoke on Wednesday and that does not bode well for their visit to Stamford Bridge where mediocre sides are destroyed with regularity.  Chelsea will be heartbroken to have lost their long unbeaten record at home last week but were quickly back on track when hammering upstart Hull in midweek.  This could very quickly get out of hand for Roy Keane's side if they do not apply themselves early on and the pressure will be intense with Chelsea certain to dominate possession.  I expect Phil Scolari to have his team fully geared up for the game and the chances of a rout are a real possibility.  Asian Handicap players on Betdaq can gorge themselves on the current line of -1.5/2 at around 5/6 if they don't want to wade into the 1.23 straight match odds price.

DAQMAN on Wednesday

Wednesday 29 October There are literally hundreds of runners on five racecards today but Daqman has the answer: look for races with potential class horses hidden among them. He’s turned up two events that regularly produce top-quality animals for the future and finds value on Betdaq in both of them.   Daqman is currently on 47 winning bets in 16 days, nearly halfway through his ninth sequence of 100 wins and on target for his fastest century. And he has a week to go with four bets left to complete a year which will have seen him lay 200 horses at a strike rate of 77%. Watch this space. On days of dross and big fields, there is one question that must be asked before you steer your cursor to Back or Lay: where, if at all, is there a class horse waiting to happen, the gem hidden among the glass beads. Just one or two of today’s 468 declared runners will make the grade to quality racing. What you find may not be big odds today but, if it really is a horse of the future, you may have to take a similar short price in races to come but against far stronger opposition. Racing is a class war; perhaps that’s why these islands were on top of the game for so long.  Your best bet as a punter is to find class and back it; spot the ordinary and the inferior and lay it. First find your race. Look at past results and see if any events throw up quality future winners. Today’s answer to that question must be the Beginners Chase at Punchestown; in its short history, every one of its winners has gone on to contest Grade-1 chases, notably Schindlers Hunt and Wild Passion. Before they emerged in this race, they had already won both big-field bumpers and hurdles or top-grade novice heats. Arthur Moore has three tries at finding himself a chasing prospect: Major Sensation had high-level handicap hurdles form; Hidden Agent looks as though he needs further; Stewarts House has to improve a lot. None has won on ground this holding. The Accordion gelding Clarified and Fond Of A Drop, who is out of a Deep Run mare, both like it heavy and could improve on their hurdles ratings but well ahead of them on that score is Forpadydeplasterer (3.15), who beat Cork All Star in a Grade-1 novice hurdle. The danger – and another with great promise for the future – is Ruby Walsh’s mount, Your Sum Man: he has all the credentials, as a big-field hurdles and bumper winner, and winner of a Listed hurdle on today’s course on heavy ground. I shall follow both my selections, barring jumping accidents; but in today’s race, the value is with Your Sum Man, at 6.4 on Betdaq as I write. Next stop for gem-hunting is the Oath Maiden at Nottingham which has turned up two horses with wide-ranging top CVs in the last five years: the Derby fourth Doctor Fremantle and the Scottish Champion Hurdle winner, Border Castle. Advisor (1.40) is the one I expect to take out of the race: the big Linamix grey has been brought on steadily and his recent work has been impressive. The heavy ground puts me off a high-stakes bet but at least he’s not favourite as I write. The market leader, Dome Rocket, holds Sixties Swinger on Goodwood form but main danger on this ground may be the Pivotal colt, Jedi, who will enjoy the greater test of stamina. I’ll dutch the two big stables of Bell and Stoute against the favourite. Another horse we’re likely to hear more about is Affluent (2.40); she’s maybe even a ‘gem’ as she’s half-sister to smart sprinter Deportivo but at today’s price in the conditions can only be part of my fun bets on Daq Multiples, which would also include Cara’s Request (3.40). I’ll add to them Alan King’s hot pair, Tuanku (1.20) and Levera (2.50) at Huntingdon. At Great Leighs, Worth A King’s (3.30) had the three requisite maidens and then had Ryan Moore up for a handicap hit, but not for long: he unseated the champion leaving the stalls. Here he is now a stone and more better off at the weights. Orbitor (4.30) is one of those big gross Bell horses needing a lot of time but has started to come good of late and ran a blinder at Nottingham; today’s trip should bring about plenty of improvement. I shall complete my Daq Multiples hot-pots with Film Set (7.50) at Kempton: ran well at Pontefract on the debut but it was quite a surprise to see him win next time out at Newbury as he got very worked up in the paddock. In the race itself, he had it easy up front but stayed on well. He has continued to work nicely since; he has relaxed a lot for racecourse experience and should be too good for today’s field off his current mark. Interesting news from the sales: Stuart Williams has picked up Slugger O’Toole for 85,000gns. Consistent in premier handicaps this season, and I’m told that Williams labelled the Victoria Cup as an ideal target for his new purchase. Ajigolo is another moving stables: the shrewd Noel Wilson was keen to secure the Piccolo gelding, seeing off Dandy Nicholls to pick up a Group winner for only 25,000gns. Look out for him in the big sprints next Flat season but, more immediately, get ready for King O’The Gypsies for the Howard Johnson team: they snapped him up for 120,000gns, seeing off determined bids from Venetia Williams, David Pipe and Jonjo O’Neill along the way. Howard Johnson’s yard really means business: Derby fifth Washington Irving is another on its way there - for 300,000gns -  as is Cambridgeshire seventh Caravel (160,000gns). There’s clearly no sign of the credit crunch squeezing Graham Wylie. Nor for that matter the David Pipe connections who went to 310,000gns to secure Master Of Arts with Dubai underbidders. Class animals all, which is where I came in.

DAQMAN on TUESDAY

Tuesday 28 October With 45 winning bets in the last 15 days, Daqman is well on his way to a ninth century and wants 1,000 wins for this column by the end of the year. Feature of his current form was Saturdays three hot lays and three big-race winners at Santa Anita, and today’s racing is down a dozen levels. But he finds outsiders on offer at 15.0 (twice), 14.0 and 11.5, and a mixed bag of shorter trades for some Daq Multiples. Daqman also heralds a ‘serious racehorse’ to mark down for next Flat season and pencils in a likely ‘coup’ hurdler or two for the winter. Gallops reports tell you what wins the ‘races’ at home but not necessarily what wins on the racetrack. Apart from the obvious for a debutant – he runs ‘green’– there is the little matter of the one that ‘doesn’t do a tap’ in his work but comes alive at the races. So it was that chalk and cheese from the same yard, that of John Oxx, met at Leopardstown yesterday: Vitruvian Man, already with impressive form and working well on the gallops, and Rayeni, a good enough winner but the ‘quiet one’ at home. Add racecourse form and good homework together and you get a hot favourite (11-10 Vitruvian Man) who was the choice of the stable jockey, Mick Kinane. Mine, too. The way the race was run suggests that Mick was also sold on gallops form, since he tried to make all with obvious confidence in his ‘Man.’ The result: Rayeni cruised past him and only had to be pushed out to win a trial which has thrown up a Derby winner and a Guineas winner in the last five years. It was the second time in Ireland’s two-year-old ‘classics’ that Oxx has saddled the one-two this year; he also did it in the Beresford. And he has a measure of the best via the Aga Khan’s Arazan, the Futurity winner who was also third in the National Stakes. My conclusion is that Rayeni, who has horses of the calibre of Sinndar and Rainbow Quest in his pedigree, going back to Dancing Brave on the dam’s side, is a serious racehorse for 2009 for the same owner-breeder, the Aga Khan. That race apart, I’ve shown this Flat season that gallops reports throw up enough winners, despite short prices, and they will be back next Spring. A trickle of newcomers remain but who is going to make demands of a debutant two-year-old at this late stage? That’s what Betdaq layers feel about the unraced Palacefield (3.10 Yarmouth), promising at home in a group of juveniles which includes Racing Post trophy runner, Gibb River, and gambled-on Newbury winner, Monitor Closely, but trading 15.0 as I write. Working well but will he act on the ground? Choral Service (by Pivotal but 14.0) and Hidden Brief (by Barathea but 11.5) are the most likely in this field to enjoy a surface which may get even softer if the wintry showers materialize. Several potential place possibilities there, then – all three of them well drawn – or would you rather take a short price about Desert Creek (1.40), who shaped like a winner waiting to happen at Windsor, and whose stable has won this race three times in the last decade? I warn you there is an improver in the race at 15.0: Halfway House has been gaining in confidence on the track as he works better and better with winners at home. Saeed bin Suroor is represented in both races and 14 of his 19 runners have reached the frame in the past fortnight: Yirga (1.40) is an each-way price but Al Marmoom (3.10) is expected to start favourite. I’ll juggle in those juvenile events with win and place, and small-stakes Multiples on the favourites. That includes the nursery where I fancy the half-sister to Red Clubs called Dance Club (2.10) who has had the requisite three runs before this lowly handicap and is at home on the soft. Finding anything today which is targeted is virtually impossible though it reads in the Racing Post as though Charlie Egerton is keen to return Dr Livingstone (4.10) to the winner’s enclosure after what he regards a ‘bad ride’ last time. Dr Livingstone is reunited with his winning jockey, Steve Drowne, whose sole mount of the day he is; the race has cut up from what you see in the morning paper, and there will probably be more defectors across the cards due to the bad weather, so I can’t really pin down value at the front of the markets from this distance.   Another who ‘wants’ a race seems to be Micky Hammond in the stayers’ handicap at Catterick: he’s lined up Aston Lad (3.30) in almost identical circumstances – rating and recent form – to when the combination won it two years ago. The racing is so poor today, and the ground so dodgy, that using a sales catalogue will do you just as well as a form book. Which is my link to telling you about one or two hot deals. Another shrewd bit of business has fallen to Tony “Harvey” Martin, the man who turns Mick Channon handicappers into hurdles coups: he’s secured Siberian Tiger for 50,000gns. Proven at Listed level over 10f on the Flat, he could be one of those big-handicap scorers for Martin. Nick Gifford has also found a handsome one: the former Ken Ivory owned and Richard Hannon trained Border Owl. A strapping sort, he won nicely at Windsor earlier in the season and has already been schooled. A plus for Gifford who paid 25,000gns for this very athletic mover. Invasions of UK jumping by Gordon Elliot have become commonplace; looks like he’s picked a bargain in staying handicapper Eddie Dowling out of Mick Channon’s for 3,500gns. Wait for his three runs over 2m, then spot the switch to a 3m handicap hurdle, and get on. Superious will most likely be on his way to P. F. A. Nicholls at Ditcheat after Anthony Bromley bagged him for 50,000gns; this handsome individual looks a strong hurdling type. Watch for a ‘Positive’ in one of those Saturday Nicholls’ columns. Monday 27 October DAQMAN FIRST, THE REST NOWHERE: After three big-race winners on Saturday, he brought his weekend profit to over 100 points when he named Knowhere (won 8-1) as best outsider in the first major chase of the jumps season at Aintree yesterday and just missed a big Longchamp pay-out with Allegretto (e.w. 2nd 10-1). He had 33 winning bets last week, putting him in line for another attack on his fastest-100 record, currently standing at 31 days. His winners in the week included 16-1, 10-1, 8-1 (twice), 5-1, 4-1 (four times) and 7-2, and he had places at 33-1, 25-1 and 10-1. SEVEN LAYS UP IN A ROW: Yesterday, Charles Street (2nd evens fav) was Daqman’s seventh successive winning lay, and his score in the week was 10 out of 11, which is a record for the column. His record for winning banker bets is also 10 out of 11, if you include one each-way banker. A late link in the form chain for next year’s Classics will be forged at Leopardstown today in a race won in the last five years by a Weld-trained Irish Derby winner (Grey Swallow) and an O’Brien-trained Newmarket 2,000 Guineas winner (Footstepsinthesand). Meanwhile, John Gosden has confirmed in the trade Press – you read it here first – that England is likely to shun his stunning Breeders Cup star, Donativum, and he may have to think in terms of a career in America. Donativum has now beaten the Champagne Stakes winner, Westphalia, and the Racing Post trophy winner, Crowded House, and is our rightful champion two-year-old. But the first snub happened this morning. How can the Racing Post today put Crowded House at the head of their “Top European 2YO Colts” on 121 and leave Donativum trailing on 113? By excluding the Santa Anita result, of course, and by assuming enough improvement in Crowded House since his defeat by Donativum in the Timeform Million to put him in the ratings range of past Racing Post Trophy winners. It has taken years to get our authorities to think global, and to admit late entry. On the matter of admitting Donativum, they will no doubt trot out the usual answer, that to allow geldings would damage the breeding pattern and alter the face of English racing. We are asked to swallow that after their introduction of banded racing and short handicaps, their misguided ripping apart of Kempton Park, and their willingness to cut the Tote adrift, even though it provides the only alternative bets to the exchanges now that bookmakers are redundant except as entertainment on the racecourse. There is no way that owners would dream of losing breeding potential in normal circumstances - gelding (on the Flat) is done only when it is essential - and for a champion to emerge from among geldings would be as rare as it is now. Meanwhile, Weld and O’Brien clash again in that Leopardstown test today but Betdaq backers seem to think that John Oxx has the answer to them, though not with paper-favourite, Rayeni. They side with Vitruvian Man, and my information is that they are right. A Curragh maiden winner, Vitruvian Man (1.25), ridden by Mick Kinane, is related to two Derby winners, being by Montjeu out of a Peintre Celebre mare, and was all the rage down to 7-4 in early exchanges. Certainly, Oxx, who has a 50% record with youngsters at Leopardstown this season, has shown a wealth in depth of 2008 juveniles– including the Futurity winner, Arazan -  and Vitruvian Man is the choice of stable-jockey Mick Kinane. Vitruvian Man slammed his maiden feld nearly five lengths and the third that day then came out and won a 15-runner race with authority. Ralph Beckett is the new name on my personal-trophy rostrum: my young trainer of the year after Look Here’s Oaks and the game Breeders Cup performance of Muhannak. Red Rumour (3.30 Leicester), his only runner today, scored well on the soft at Sandown after being gelded but is 15.0 on Betdaq following his flop at Great Leighs. But it’s a race full of in-and-out form: John Gosden has also ‘done a Donativum’ with the likely favourite, Charm School, but the ‘op’ hasn’t worked so far and an eyeshield is added to the aids today. I think experience is required for juveniles on this soft terrain, and I’m looking to dutch Master Rooney and Swiss Diva (4.00): ‘Rooney’ ran too freely at the slower pace over 7f but his Nottingham second at today’s trip, with cut in the ground, has worked out well. Swiss Diva was a decent third at Newmarket on her return after a break and, as a Pivotal, should relish the conditions; she has a 5lb fillies’ allowance to help her beat the colts. Of the two-year-olds at Lingfield, It’s A Man’s World (2.20) has improved since the debut. I shall take out some place insurance on the win stake, because the yard has been missing strike with its juveniles: nine wins but 37 minor placings. Compare that with Gosden’s 28 juvenile wins and 29 places! His Oasis Dream filly Party Frock (3.50) could have the honour of being an appropriate next winner in the stable’s annals following the champagne day with Ravens Pass and Donativum. Ghanaati (3.10 Kempton) completes a quartet of two-year-olds which I shall Daq Multiple today: well bred, well drawn, well regarded and another getting the fillies’ allowance after a decent debut. Has been working impressively.

Sunday 26 October TEN WINNING BETS: Daqman made Breeders Cup night his own with six winning bets – reaching 10 for the day - including Mukannak (won 10-1), Ravens Pass (won 8-1) and Conduit (won 7-2). FIVE LAYS OUT OF FIVE: He dared to lay the hot favourite, Curlin (0 6-4 fav), in the Classic finale, giving him five straight lays up on a day to remember. HE LAID THE CHAMPION: He got the Classic spot on when he laid the American champion, named Ravens Pass to win and Tiago (3rd 25-1) to finish fast into a place. Double Whammy! HE LAID THE SOLDIER: He earlier laid both UK sprint challenger, Fleeting Spirit (0 5-1 jt fav) and then Soldier Of Fortune (0 2-1 fav) in Conduit’s big Turf success. Double Whammy! HE LAID AGAINST PRICEWISE: At Doncaster, he laid the Pricewise tip in the big sprint (Cheveton 0 6-1 fav) and his nap hand of lays was completed by Welsh Emperor (2nd 6-1). His afternoon bets included Culcabook (3rd 33-1). BETS RECORD: His 40 winnings bets in the last 12 days yet again puts him in line for a record century of wins; he’s already hit 100 in 31 days, 32 days, 38 days and 39 days (twice). He wants 1,000 winners by the end of the year (current score 846). LAYS RECORD: He achieved his target of 150 lays out of 200 for 75% in one year (ends November 5): his score is already 152 out of 195 at 78% with time to spare. No excuses for banging on again about John Gosden, as he’s trumped the array of Aidan O’Brien sparklers with a fine end-of-season crescendo of crackers since Ascot in September. And he had the balls to reach for the sky before his old home crowd at Santa Anita last night. Unfortunately, Donativum doesn’t have them! In the sense of courage he does; in the sense of anatomical requirements for a place in the Classics, he doesn’t. All those who searched in vain for Guineas and Derby odds after his Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf win had missed the racecard description “ro g Cadeaux Genereux – Miss Universe”: Donativum is a grey gelding. We’ve seen geldings go on to turf triumphs later in life but I cannot recall a two-year-old hammering at the door of this last bastion of the old pattern doctrine: keep the geldings out. No, let ‘him’ in! You’re talking about the animal that has already beaten runaway Racing Post Trophy winner, Crowded House. Because of the system, we must sit back and read accolades about ‘House’ when the best ‘horse’ is passed over. As a bet for last night’s Juvenile after the Racing Post success of Crowded House, Donativum was the best value I’ve seen this year: bookmakers and exchanges didn’t cotton on for some time but, if you didn’t get on at bigger odds or trades then, the 11-2 SP was still Donativum dream-land. And don’t worry, ‘blind’ bookies and layers are still around. If you don’t believe me, they’re still making Rip Van Winkle Guineas favourite. I’d bet Donativum would beat him without a winkle! Today you have a typical tricky set of choices for the time of year: what will win the Prix Royal Oak at the end of a long Flat season; and what will win the Old Roan Chase at the start of the big Jumps venues? The answers have to be: the improver, the fresh horse or the horse that goes well fresh. You won’t find a fresh horse at Longchamp at the front of the market: Yeats looked jaded when beaten in the French Gold Cup by Bannaby, who had a hard race that day and, like Le Miracle last year, will struggle to win again so soon. Veracity won the Jockey Club Cup only eight days ago. It’s a tougher race for Allegretto (2.50 Longchamp) than when she won last year but only if the others perform at peak, whereas she is comparatively fresh again with only four runs in her season and is value at around 7-1. The danger for me is Getaway: all the rage at one time for the Arc, interest waned and I think it was realized that - after three wins over long distances – today was more of a target, though he ran on well behind Zarkava. In the Old Roan Chase, there is a big improver – Oslot – and one that goes well fresh, Monets Garden. Voy Por Ustedes usually starts his season in the runner-up spot and his stablemate, Alan King’s hurdles champion, Katchit, failed to score first time up. If Monet’s Garden (3.15 Aintree) is to beat Voy Por Ustedes, it has to be today in receipt of 8lb., and Paul Nicholls says this is not a target race like Galway; Oslot is not as straight as he was then. Also on a good mark, but equally not getting any younger, is Knowhere, another who goes well fresh and from a stable that’s made a flying start. Barry Geraghty is three out of nine from his English rides this jumps season and, though Nicky Henderson is in such fine form, I can get 8.0 on Betdaq about Geraghty’s mount, Mr Gardner (1.00), in the opener because of the cramped trades about On Raglan Road. With ‘Choc’ Thornton needed for ‘Voy’, Wayne Hutchinson gets an Alan King Wincanton duo which both go well fresh, Midnight Sail (1.15) and Russian Invader. Midnight Sail looked decent in his bumpers and is a tough type who should have no trouble scoring this winter;  ‘Kingy’ is reportedly ‘looking forward’ to this one’s hurdles debut today. I’m told to have a pound on Lydlinch (2.55), making his handicap debut and upped to a trip for the first time.  Related to the stayer Over The Last and the prolific 20-furlong winner, Stray Shot (12 wins from 19 starts), Lydlinch is 25.0 on Betdaq, as I write. It’s favourite Charles Street’s third run in a week but he’s hardly had a race yet, so is hard to oppose for that reason; however, it’s raining at Wincanton as I write and that might slow him down; all his wins have been on good ground, yet all in poor time, the last two around 28 seconds slow. I’m on such a roll of lays, I can afford to show my Gosdens and have a go!

DAQMAN on Saturday

Saturday 25 October Daring Daqman is taking them all on today as he bids for a five-timer of lays to take his score way past a fabulous 150 at a 77% strike rate. HE’S LAYING THE CHAMPION: Daqman defies the form book and opposes the American champion in the world’s biggest race at Santa Anita tonight and also lays the year’s fastest 5f sprinter. HE’S LAYING THE FAVOURITE: Daqman declares against another favourite, in the Breeders Cup Turf. He says this one can’t win on the ground. HE’S LAYING PRICEWISE: Daqman takes on two favourites at Doncaster, including the Pricewise selection in the big sprint. Then tips a colt in the Racing Post Trophy that’s never raced on turf. Daqman analyses the entire day’s racing from the 1.05 opener at Aintree to the Breeders Cup Classic at 11.45. Read all about it! Imagine Kate Moss lining up to ride alongside the top jocks at Royal Ascot led in through a fanfare of trumpeting outriders to a presentation by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It could only happen in America. For Kate Moss, read Chantal Sutherland, the Vogue and make-up model and second top Canadian jockey, and for Ascot read Santa Anita tonight. The rest depends on her mount, Mine That Bird, in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, which would be the Pro-Ride of the new surface so far One man used to the razzle-dazzle American style at the home of the legendary Sea Biscuit is John Gosden, who started training there and won the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Mile at Hollywood Park. Gosden’s Ravens Pass (11.45) would take the biscuit if he could capture the Classic finale tonight, and he has every chance, with firm ground the aid to getting the 10 furlongs. I believe he can do it, that they only learned how to ride him in the QE11: the ‘Raven’ would surely have won the Sussex Stakes had he been closer to the pace and used his reserves of power for a late swoop. We’d all been thinking his big-time seconds were a stamina fault but they just hadn’t cottoned on to his style and he’d raced too far out of his ground. When they did, he turned round the Sussex form on Henrythenavigator in that QE11, yet is the longer price for tonight, trading 10.0 on Betdaq as I write against an 8.2 offer for ‘Henry’. Buddy, spare a dime for a rank outsider, Tiago (27.0), who more than once has shown a storming late run on tonight’s track. Curlin this year eclipsed the earnings record of the great Cigar but has not been the same since taken off steroids and his turf form doesn’t equate to this. Lay. The opener would go to Sixties Icon (6.10) on form but the surface could suit Ralph Beckett’s Dundalk AW Listed winner, Muhannak, a big improver but 14.5 on Betdaq as I write. This is the race to get stuck into European challengers; America doesn’t have top-class stayers. But they do have sprinters to head an old-time cavalry charge. In fact, the Turf sprint could be a record-breaker: Jeremy Noseda’s Fleeting Spirit (6.50) is officially the fastest animal of the year in any race at 5f. But I’m laying her; she is unlikely to last out 6f-plus against the make-all monster, aptly named California Flag, who scorched the Santa Anita green to beat the best of today’s rivals a month ago. Here comes the judge! Soldier Of Fortune (11.00) couldn’t cope with the fast ground at Longchamp and it will be faster than Arc day in the Breeders Cup Mile: lay him. Red Rocks has won the race before but, for me, this looks set up for Conduit, stamina-packed as a Leger winner but with a turn of foot on firm as he showed at Royal Ascot. English racing today also starts with John Gosden. I warned you earlier in the week that, though only an AW winner, Red Spider (3.35) could be the surprise packet in the Racing Post Trophy and I told you to get on as soon as Betdaq reopened. Double figures have gone but you could still get 9.8 this morning. Not a single winner at Doncaster yesterday was drawn below eight and, in the sprint, four of the first five home came from stall 13 or higher. I am, therefore, laying the morning favourite, Cheveton (2.25) from the five stall, who is 9lb higher than his last win. Cheveton is the Pricewise selection for the race, which will make him even shorter than he should be. I have a cavalry of 21 others in the field helping me to get him. Voice Coach (4.10) could boost my stake on Conduit: they have been working together and Voice Coach is lightly raced and stepping up to a trip he’s been needing. Welsh Emperor (4.45) was a lay at 3.7 this morning with his customary easy lead unlikely to happen here and the ground drying out against him. I predict an avalanche of cash for Sirocco Breeze (4.45), trading far too big at 4.7 and ‘the word’ from the long grass this morning. Welsh Emperor would then drift to backable odds. Monitor Closely (1.10) is a short price but layers be warned that he not only sets the standard for the race but has ‘won’ this on the gallops: he really impressed on Tuesday morning when stretching away from 100-rated Don’t Panic with Racing Post Trophy runner Gibb River further behind. Steam Cuisine (3.20) may not have the current form figures to attempt a repeat over the straight 7f but she certainly has the current form on the gallops: her recent work has really caught the eye and 11.8 on Betdaq this morning was tempting win and place. Rippling Ring (1.05 Aintree) didn’t get up the hill at Cheltenham and I’m marking him down as an Aintree horse, today and at next April’s festival. One for your Daq Multiples but have a place on last year’s winner, Culcabock, who has been lined up for this again (with his yard among the winners) but is 25.0 on Betdaq as I write. American Trology (3.15), a very useful performer on the Flat in France, has been well schooled and is also Multiples material but the Paul Nicholls’ banker, and my Saturday nap, is at Chepstow, a course the trainer farms with his novices. Big Fella Thanks (2.20) has the 4m National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham next March as his target and I shall follow him from day one today, with maximum stakes. I hear that Mr Pointment is in the Pertemps qualifier ahead of next month’s Becher Chase just to keep the weight down for Forest Pennant (2.50), which is why Mr Pointment offers are getting ever higher as I write (11.0). Any more and he’ll be worth a pound!

DAQMAN on Friday

Friday 24 October Daqman’s done it again! He landed five winning bets yesterday to bring his score to 16 this week for four consecutive days of profit, totting up to 77 points. THREE IN A ROW: He laid two morning favourites at Great Leighs last night, Majuba and Mazaris, and both were beaten. He’s now on three in a row. DOUBLE WHAMMY: As well as a 10-point lay on Mazaris, only third at 6-4 favourite, Daqman picked the winner of the race, Pink Ivory (won 4-1). First Point (won 4-1) at Ludlow was his fourth 4-1 winner in a week in which he has also scored at 16-1 and 5-1. THREE IN A ROW: The Daqman banker yesterday, Headline Act (won 10-11), was his third on the trot, following The Tother One (won 8-11) and On Our Way (won 11-8). His record is 9 out of 10. With 130 runners at Doncaster and a new synthetic racing surface at Santa Anita, the main meetings at home and abroad look like layers’ benefits. But be warned that, although there are 124 losers to be had on Town Moor today, winners at the corresponding meeting with similar big fields last year started 7-2, 4-1, 9-2, 6-1 and 7-1 and only one outsider. So, though getting an edge is difficult, following the Betdaq market is the most obvious option. What also makes life easier is that, when trades start at 4-1 or more, there are wider margins for bet and lay, lay and bet. So I shall lay the Stoute two-year-olds, Dream Win and Leocorno, the paper favourites in the opening two-year-old maidens, but save my stake with a bet if the market comes for either one of them or there are appropriate fluctuations giving me a few points to play with. Stoute has had a poor season with his two-year-olds: he’s had only 13 winners, less than half last season’s total; his last 16 juvenile runners have been beaten, including three hot favourites. He’s had Ryan Moore up on 11 of those 13 winners. Though Richard Mullen, today’s pilot, rides few horses for him, he has a good percentage for the yard; but not on two-year-olds. Winning with John Gosden has been considerably easier than robbing a bank this week and Jesse James (1.50) might be the answer to the opener; he refused to go into the stalls at Newmarket but has no such problem at home and works with winners. Gosden is twice represented in the next but he’s up against Michael Jarvis, who has a five-from-12 record with juveniles at Doncaster and had the first-race winner last year: Ballet Dancer (2.20) is the subject of good reports. The same stable’s Hunterview (2.55) is expected to improve for the longer trip. Three-year-olds have won the 4.05 four times in the last five years and there’s a pretty convincing reason why they missed a year: they didn’t have any runners that time. Wells Lyrical is the obvious choice but this is the race for outsiders: the recent winners have been 12-1, 20-1 and 33-1, with only one favourite. As I’m just having small each-way bets at ‘Donny’ today, I’ll add another one, Sleepy Hollow (4.05) who has conditions in his favour for a stable in form. At Fakenham, High Profit (4.25) is one I’ve been watching for, first time in a handicap: trainer Charlie Mann’s win-and-place strike-rate is currently 62%. Nicky Henderson’s is even better with 67% and I reckon his raid should yield something from Scots Dragoon (3.50) and Midsummer Magic (5.25). At Wolverhampton tonight, I’m taking on Recession Proof (7.50) in the nursery; up a grade as well as being hiked 7lb, and I don’t think Holly Hall claiming 7lb is the answer. Jamie Spencer has deserted Recession Proof to get on Aladdin’s Lamp. As well as that obvious hint, there’s first time in a handicap for Adios Juan, whose trainer has won three of the five nurseries he’s targeted this season, and there’s Luca Cumani with First Queen; he’s on a 41% strike rate with two-year-old runners on the track. Heart Shaped (9.15) is just built for the Santa Anita straight; fifth in the Cheveley Park for Aidan O’Brien and needs all of tonight’s mile: 15.0 on Betdaq. Visit (10.35) at 12.0 this morning was a real value trade, since she was closing down Halfway To Heaven (4.8 favourite as I write) in the Falmouth. She’s a relative of a winner of this race, Banks Hill, and Visit’s trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, won it with Islington (the UK is three out of five since that win in 2003). ’Stoutie’ is where I came in today: his losers at Doncaster as well as his winner at Santa Anita will all pay out on Betdaq.
