TIME TO PLUNGE ON THE PLACE MARKET: Shamrock finds what he thinks is a ‘cast-iron’ place bet at the Irish meeting at Cork today.

TOP JOCKEY FOR 76.0 NATIONAL BET: Shamrock has secured a National-winning rider for his 76.0 Liverpool outsider.

Take a power-packed place bet at Cork today. Powerstation pushes seven horses out of the handicap in the Boole Hurdle (5.55) this evening and paves the way for a cast-iron place bet.

Though Powerstation has every chance of reaching the first three, I’m not thinking of him: no, the Shamrock Award for consistency, and a banker place bet powered by his position in the handicap, goes to Raz De Maree, who’s never been out of the first three in his life.

That’s despite having to face all types of terrain from soft-heavy ground to good-to-firm going. ‘Raz’ has always been within three lengths of the winner.

Powerstation is the first Cheltenham runner to be seen out since and, with 5lb claimed off his back, he can make his presence felt. Even at age 11 – his two years running World Hurdle third to Big Buck’s just a memory or two – he could well be in the frame, though he’s won only one hurdle in the last 30 months.

But I think his concession of more than 24lb to Raz De Maree will be too much. ‘Raz’, who ran a close second at Naas to a Pertemps Hurdle finalist, stablemate Rivage d’Or, has five years on Powerstation.

Another consistent runner in the race is Doctor Deejay for the super-successsful Mullins-Walsh combo, but this is a step up in trip, no doubt widening his horizons with Punchestown in mind.

Unplaced in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham last season, Doctor Deejay bypassed the festival to prep here for Punchestown, where he’s run two seconds in two runs, including runner-up last year to Gimli’s Rock at the big Spring meeting.

Big Game Hunter is another trying a new trip, whereas Vics Canvas, Caim Hill, The Bishop Looney, Clan Tara and Let Yourself Go are all distance winners.

But what inclines me to Raz De Maree is the abundance of stamina he’s shown, on more than one occasion getting outpaced and then picking up the bit again. I believe that, in a strongly-run race, he’ll find a late surge.

GRAND NATIONAL: More power to my elbow: my Aintree Grand National bet, Killyglen, will be ridden by Robbie Power, who won the race on Silver Birch in 2007.

Killyglen was schooled at Navan on Saturday after the racing there and looked well. He is one of the few who will appreciate the sounder surface that is always likely on the fine Aintree terrain. He’s still a huge price on Betdaq, with offers of 76.0 this morning.

We landed the 4/1 double on Thursday in good style which is good news in that we will finish March with a small profit no matter what happens today.

It's particularly encoraging given March has seemingly produced more than it's fair share of bad beat stories - horses when clear and falling in the lead and 92nd minute goals in the football. The storm has been weathered and as things stand we are 10 points up on the month.

Today's bet will actually flip into the April account as we are looking at the football on Saturday and suggest a home win treble on BETDAQ MULTIPLES on Newcastle, Everton and Birmingham - paying around 8/1.

Multiple Betting - BETDAQ HELP PAGE

BETDAQ was the first exchange to introduce MULTIPLE bets to exchange betting. You can view all markets that are multiple ‘enabled’ through a separate multiples portal. Click on the Multiples tab to access these markets.

A Multiple Bet is defined as individual bets which combine two or more selections in a single bet. The overall payout for a win (including the original stake) is equal to the stake multiplied by the product of the various odds.

To make the first choice in your Multiple simply go to the market and make a selection as if you were placing a single bet. There will only be 1 price box available for each selection. This selection will be added to the Multiples tab on the right side of your screen. It may be helpful to imagine this area as your shopping basket.

To add further selections to your Multiple, focus your mouse back on the main screen and select another bet of your choice, note you must leave the market you were in and enter any other market that is offering Multiple Bets. Only one  selection per event can be added to a Multiple bet. For example your first selection could be on a horse race and your second on a soccer match. As you add selections to your Multiple you will see your shopping list grow. BETDAQ can support up to 7 selections in any Multiple Bet.

In order to get a quote of available prices for your Multiple click on the "Get Bet Types" button on the right of your screen. This will allow you to choose from all the possible Muliples that can be made from your chosen selections.  For example if you have made three selections you will be offered the choice of 3 doubles and 1 treble. A full description of all the bets available can be found below.

Once you have chosen your Bet Type, you can enter your stake on the Bet Slip click "Place Bet". This will prompt a Bet Verification screen, verify all the details of your Multiple Bet are correct and click "Confirm Bet". This will open a Bet Receipt that you can keep for your personal records.

Multiple Bet Types Offered:

You can combine up to 7 selections in different events to make a Double, Treble, 4-fold,  5-Fold right up to a 7-fold. In making a selection, you are choosing to back that selection, please note it is not possible to lay a selection as part of a multiple bet. All selections must win for the multiple bet to be settled as a winner.

Commission payable is calculated at 5% of winnings per multiple bet for all customers.

You can combine up to 7 selections in different events to make a Double, Treble, 4-fold,  5-Fold right up to a 7-fold. In the event of one or more of your selections not taking part your bet will be regarded as having one less leg i.e. a treble becomes a double etc.

BIG CLASSICS VALUE STACKED UP ON BETDAQ: Daqman finds horse after horse showing at massive value on the exchange for the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Derby and the Oaks. He takes offers on the 2,000 and Derby, including 32.0 a colt which is only about half that with a bookmaker in the Guineas.

WELL IN FRONT OF PRICEWISE: While Pricewise in the Racing Post is forced to put up an Aidan O’Brien runner at 12-1, Daqman found 16.0 about the same horse on the Daq.

JACKPOT BETS START AGAIN: Daqman’s bets are the first Flat-season jackpot attacks by the man who had 10 winners out of 12 days jackpotting in the run up to Cheltenham.

There’s 2,000 Guineas value on Betdaq going begging. With Dream Ahead a doubtful runner, Frankel has tightened up at the front of the market but several colts are at value offers, compared with bookmaker prices.

Aidan O’Brien’s Roderic O’Connor, generally 10-1 with bookmakers, is 16.0 on the Daq, as I write, which looks good value since Ballydoyle is off to an early start this year.

Dubai Prince’s 21.0 offers compare with a 12-1 Chandler quote and the 14-1 with most layers. Casamento is 22.0 but also as low as 12-1 (including Betfred and William Hill), and Strong Suit is 28.0 alongside 16-1 with Coral and 20-1 generally.

I’m taking some 32.0 William Haggas’s Fury, which is almost double the odds quoted by Coral (16.0) and offers bags of ‘overs’ on the general 20-1.

I put up Fury in my Lucky Seven horses to follow and the market fluctuations now confirm his value for me at the 32.0 with, I suspect, imminent news that Kieren Fallon will ride.

Fallon landed back-to-back wins on Fury at Newbury (firm) and Newmarket (soft) last autumn, in which he beat a total of 38 others, showing signs of greenness in the Newbury race but taking the Newmarket event smoothly.

The trainer declared at the time that he thought he had a Jersey Stakes winner but success over 7f on the soft as a two-year-old in the wide-open spaces of Newmarket suggests to me that the Rowley Mile Classic will be within his scope, with winter development and a sounder surface.

Haggas, along with many others with horses in the front rank of the betting, will make a decision in the next 10 days or so. There is a precedent for the stable to go straight to its Classic target with a maiden winner: Haggas trained Shaamit from winning a modest maiden at Doncaster as a juvenile to go without further trial to Epsom and win the 1996 Derby.

There’s a similar market situation in the 1,000 Guineas, with Hooray doubtful, and the front of the market holding Daq value, with offers translating to a 104% book, alongside 123% best with a bookmaker.

Compare White Moonstone offers of 8.8 with Coral’s 5-1, Misty For Me’s 9.2 with 6-1 in the bigger books (Coral, Boylesport, Tote), and the 19.0 Laughing Lashes as an alternative to the 12-1 with Coral, who also go 7-1 Helleborine (10.0 on the Daq).

The Derby is a long way off and many balloons will be burst in the trials but the same story of value on the Daq currently applies, even at the head of the market, where Frankel is 6.0 but only 3-1 with Boylesport and Paddy Power.

Four firms, including Power and Bluesquare are 12-1 Picture Editor, yet a massive 37.0 is available on the exchange which, as for the 2,000 Guineas, is significantly bigger about Roderic O’Connor for Epsom (16.0 about a colt generally quoted 10-1 with bookmakers).

The huge offers about Picture Editor are worth taking, since connections today confirmed that he will be campaigned for the Derby with the Dante Stakes en route.

Getting a ‘live one’ is the first requirement of an ante-post bet. Remember, you are not trying to pick the winner at this stage: you are trying to pick the horse or horses most likely to shed value (because they are ‘live’, could win their trials or will be well touted) and leave you quids in with the ‘overs’ in your pocket.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t spend the ‘overs’. You can. That’s the whole point. If you are right in what you back now, in terms of their reducing in price in the future, you will arrive on the day with an underround book and, theoretically, be able to back every horse in the race and win.

White Mooonstone is the stand-out for the Oaks, trading at 16.0, though William Hill go half that at 7-1. Rainbow Springs at 30.0 is also double, if you’re looking at Betfred (14-1).

Meanwhile, on the Grand National front, I can get 14.0 What A Friend, 15.5 Backstage and 16.0 Oscar Time, where you can find only 10-1 quotes in a place for each, though they are generally 11-1 and 12-1 (twice), respectively.

Niche Market is 12-1 on Betfred but offered 19.0 on the Daq, Big Fella Thanks 12-1 in several places but 17.5. Long-time-favourite Ballabriggs remains generally 14-1 but 21.0 on Betdaq and, if you want to back Quinz, be quick about it and grab the 32.0 on the Daq, massively bigger than Coral’s 12-1 and the 14-1 and 16-1 in most places.

With the Premier League taking a break due to the International friendlies this week, tonight’s best action can be found at the Pirelli Stadium, where Burton Albion take on North Westerner’s Macclesfield in League Two.

Albion sit precariously in 22nd place, although they do have four games in hand over both teams below them. They’ll be keen to beat Macclesfield tonight and begin to put some distance between them and the relegation zone.

The two team’s previous three meetings have all been tight, with Macclesfield edging an early season encounter 2-1. A brace from Hamza Bencherif did the damage that afternoon and extended Macclesfied’s unbeaten run against Burton to three matches.

However, the Silkmen will be low on confidence after a 4-0 thrashing at home by Stevenage last weekend. As a consequence they’ve been pushed out to 3.4 on Betdaq, with the Brewers favourite at around 2.28.

Albion’s status as favourites is questionable, as they have hit a run of five games without a win. They’ll be desperate not to make it six, but the clever money could be backing the draw. Punters can currently get around 3.55 on the ‘Daq’ for the points to be shared.  It’s worth noting that in all three encounters both sides have scored, and I expect this trend to continue.

BOLGER CAN PUT 1,000 GUINEAS TO THE SWORD: Shamrock anticipates a springer in the market for the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas next week when a filly whose name translates as ‘sword of light’ has her final trial for Jim Bolger.

BOOST FOR CHAMPION CHANCE: On the jumps front, Paul Townend, holding on to a slender lead in the Irish jockeys’ title, is now fully expected to be back for the Irish Grand National meeting at Fairyhouse on April 24.

Is it three, two, WON for Jim Bolger’s Scribonia sisters in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas? He runs the third full sister of the matings of Galileo and Scribonia in his favourite trial at The Curragh on Sunday.

The filly in question is Claiomh Solais (‘sword of light’ to English readers) and the designated race is an EBF maiden which gentleman Jim has won twice in the last three years, firstly with Angels Story, subsequent winner of the Ulster Oaks, and then with Fergus McIver, who then ran up to Fame And Glory in the Ballysax, was second in the Gowran Park Classic Trial and third in the Derrinstown before finishing fifth in the Irish 2,000.

So are we only likely to get another yardstick or another nearly horse? No, the potential is there for better in the shape of Claiomh Solais, a full sister to Cuis Ghaire, runner-up in the 2009 Newmarket 1,000 Guineas and to Gile Na Greine third in the 2010 renewal.

Like Angels Story and Fergus McIver, Claiomh Solais failed to break the maiden before Sunday’s race, in Claiomh’s case because she came up against a Dermot Weld ‘plot’.

Dermot put blinkers on his Medicean filly Sapphire at The Curragh earlier this month on ground she loved and said ‘go!’ She did, beating Claiomh Solais and Aidan O’Brien’s colt Quest For Peace but in a roughhouse race.

Claiomh Solais took over two out but was soon being pressed on the soft terrain by Sapphire and Quest For Peace (also unhappy in the ground) but that pair collided.. twice. Sunday will see the second and third in ‘collision’ again, in that they clash in the Curragh maiden.

O’Brien has already had a 1,000 Guineas trial winner with Empower at Leopardstown, Bolger having failed in that race with a similar ‘plot’ to Dermot’s: but blinkers failed to inspire his Hurricane Havoc (she clearly needed further).

Claiomh Solais could be Bolger’s last chance of a Classic filly, since another of his fillies, Radharcnafarraige, was only 12th behind Empower that day and Banimpire was put in her place by Lolly For Dolly in the Park Express Stakes.

Of Claiomh’s illustrious sisters, Cuis Ghaire went to the Guineas without a run that season, whereas Gile Na Greine was second on the AW track at Dundalk before her close third to Special Duty. You could argue that Claiomh Solais has already bettered them in her prep.

She is also entered in the Curragh 1,000 Guineas, and both the English and Irish Oaks. Quest For Peace, incidentally, is in the Epsom Derby.

Last autumn he ran third on the debut to Irish 2,000 entry Cocozza and Manieree, who was fourth in the Empowering trial. Wild Wind, O’Brien’s runner-up to Empowering in the same trial, is in the Newmarket and Curragh 1,000s and in the Irish Oaks.

It’s all beginning to take shape but who can so far follow the Pattern, and knit one and one together and make a Guineas pearl, is a better puzzle-solver than I am at this stage.

TRAINER TO FOLLOW AT THE MEETING’ Trainers are creatures of habit. Year on year, they do the same thing, try to win the same races, aim too high (you know who I mean) or aim very low (watch out for sequence horses from Sir Mark Prescott again). It’s the same under both Rules, jumps and Flat.

Recent examples from each discipline: Ferdy Murphy seemed to have ‘lost it’; he could be discounted; his was the first horse you would oppose. Until Cheltenham. Then, as ever, he came back with a vengeance. All was revealed.

Ferdy famously produced Divers to win the Listed novices’ handicap on the opening day; hit the woodwork as Kalahari King missed his target by only a length, run out of the Ryanair by a real McCoy ride on Albertas Run; then, on Gold Cup day, De Boitron made the frame in the Grand Annual.

And, as always, when a stable has laid its stall out for the big occasion, Murphy also had a winner at one of the smaller venues, Lord Villez scoring under Graham Lee at Carlisle the same weekend.

Recent example number two: Tommy Stack. Just 12 runners in the Irish jumps season; very quiet after Christmas and on everybody’s cold list, and made no show at Cheltenham. But, you can set your clock by it, Tommy’s string comes alive on the opening days of the Irish Flat season at The Curragh.

Sure enough, in a race in which the trainer was two out of two, Blue Dahlia slammed a field of 15 others first run back since September. Then Tommy went in again, putting the blinds on Lolly For Dolly for the first time on her first appearance since last June. Result: Dolly landed the lolly at 5-2.

Take a look at the previous year’s result and, surprise surprise, Lolly For Dolly won her first two starts, including a Group 3 second time up. Assess trainer’s habits and relate them to the horse’s ability. Like this…

‘GOT UP TO WIN’ Trainers who know their stuff but have a horse which will be overtaken when the ‘real racing’ starts - when they have to face strong opposition with all the yards then fit - have only one option: they must get that horse ready to win first time.

This is particularly vital when the animal is a ‘glass’ horse, prone to injury, needing regular medication, won’t let himself down on a firm surface but taxed too much by a hard race on the soft..

All those things and more mean not only that the horse will be ‘got up’ first time but that, in subsequent races, if any, he or she is likely to be a false price, being unable to reproduce the one-off form.

‘GOES WELL FRESH’ There are also horses which can’t stand much racing, or who are ‘thinkers’, remembering for a long time the ‘pain barrier’ they have to go through in a race; or they have become ‘characters’, racing only in their way when they want to.

Such horses are given long rests from the racecourse, are ‘sweetened up’ at home, and produced to win first time back. You need a good trainer and you often need a good jockey to ‘kid’ such a horse home.

‘TOO FRESH’ This is quite the reverse: the horse is said to be ‘too fresh.’ He is too excited, too headstrong, first time back on a racecourse, anxious to get on with it, wasting his nervous enjoy ‘pulling too hard’ because he is ‘not settled.’

Such a horse is to be avoided until a race has ‘taken the freshness out of him’. The good news is that your rival punters will write him off and you will get a better price next time.

‘FIRST TIME’ STABLES Some trainers – Jeremy Noseda for instance – get their horses ready at home. Make a list of all those yards which have the ability to win with an animal first time. In another list, note those stables which can then improve that winner next time out.

But also make a list of winners from ‘first time’ yards which are then dropped in class. Punters rush to back them but, even those heading for weak races in the North from a modicum of southern success, are often false favourites.

They were only intended for a one-off, or the trainer has ‘got underneath them’, overtrained an animal of poor constitution, so that their form fades rapidly. Finally, you need a list of trainers who can improve horses through the ranks, stepping up their demands.

The horse that makes this improvement is, by definition, a young horse. He attracts weight from the handicapper, and the punter says: No way; he’s up 7lb. But he may already have that in hand, or he may be able to improve that much as he grows and matures. It’s all down to the trainer.

‘TWO AND HIT’ Systems don’t work as such (‘system doing well, send more money’) but, if they have a grain or more of ‘truth’ in them, they can be contributory to your knowledge and ability to find winners.

One of the most successful is to list solid handicappers, and those juveniles and three-year-olds of last season likely to improve this year, and watch them run once or twice until you think they are entered for a race they can win. Then, and only then, do you back them. A good rule is: two runs back, unless the stable is in hot form after their first race.

‘THREE AND HIT’ After three runs, a young horse is given a handicap mark. It is perfectly acceptable for an animal starting out not to be overly punished in these early races before the handicapper’s assessment.

Your job, if you want to win money, is to spot those trainers skilled at ‘disguising’ their horses in those prep races and, even more skilful, placing them in the right handicap to go for a hit.

‘W SIX TIMES’ It’s an old and libelous form description: ‘waited with, will win when wanted’. It refers to a horse which has been ‘disguised’ by his trainer, with the intention of springing that horse at big odds at a later date.

With the advent of strict stewardship, this now rarely involves ‘burying’ a horse (hiding his ability by, for instance, ‘running him into the back’ of other horses in the race).

But trainers have other means of ‘disguising’ a horse: by running over the wrong distance, on the wrong ground, or in the wrong class before ‘producing’ that horse to win when all the conditions are right.

Don’t be too hard on the trainer. Part of his job is finding out the horse’s scope and ability, what distance suits, whether he can ‘open other options’ by a ‘step up in trip.’

Multiple Betting - BETDAQ HELP PAGE

BETDAQ was the first exchange to introduce MULTIPLE bets to exchange betting. You can view all markets that are multiple ‘enabled’ through a separate multiples portal. Click on the Multiples tab to access these markets.

A Multiple Bet is defined as individual bets which combine two or more selections in a single bet. The overall payout for a win (including the original stake) is equal to the stake multiplied by the product of the various odds.

To make the first choice in your Multiple simply go to the market and make a selection as if you were placing a single bet. There will only be 1 price box available for each selection. This selection will be added to the Multiples tab on the right side of your screen. It may be helpful to imagine this area as your shopping basket.

To add further selections to your Multiple, focus your mouse back on the main screen and select another bet of your choice, note you must leave the market you were in and enter any other market that is offering Multiple Bets. Only one  selection per event can be added to a Multiple bet. For example your first selection could be on a horse race and your second on a soccer match. As you add selections to your Multiple you will see your shopping list grow. BETDAQ can support up to 7 selections in any Multiple Bet.

In order to get a quote of available prices for your Multiple click on the "Get Bet Types" button on the right of your screen. This will allow you to choose from all the possible Muliples that can be made from your chosen selections.  For example if you have made three selections you will be offered the choice of 3 doubles and 1 treble. A full description of all the bets available can be found below.

Once you have chosen your Bet Type, you can enter your stake on the Bet Slip click "Place Bet". This will prompt a Bet Verification screen, verify all the details of your Multiple Bet are correct and click "Confirm Bet". This will open a Bet Receipt that you can keep for your personal records.

Multiple Bet Types Offered:

You can combine up to 7 selections in different events to make a Double, Treble, 4-fold,  5-Fold right up to a 7-fold. In making a selection, you are choosing to back that selection, please note it is not possible to lay a selection as part of a multiple bet. All selections must win for the multiple bet to be settled as a winner.

Commission payable is calculated at 5% of winnings per multiple bet for all customers.

You can combine up to 7 selections in different events to make a Double, Treble, 4-fold,  5-Fold right up to a 7-fold. In the event of one or more of your selections not taking part your bet will be regarded as having one less leg i.e. a treble becomes a double etc.

For three or more selections, you can take all combinations to make a 'Trixie' (4 bets, 3 doubles and a treble), 'Yankee' (11 bets, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a 4-fold) or 'Super Yankee' (26 bets, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 4-folds and 1 5-fold). In these combinations each of the bets is settled separately.
