PREVIEW
There might not be many neutrals hitting the reminder button on their Sky remotes for the West Brom v Wigan game on Tuesday night, but those of us tuning in may want to have a few quid on the contest to spice up the interest.
The ‘W club’ will almost certainly have fewer members in the Premier League next season with Wigan in the bottom three alongside Wolves and West Ham. And, after six defeats in seven, West Brom seem determined to muscle their way into the relegation scrap too.
This after things had started so well for the Baggies. They reached the giddy heights of fourth in October following a 2-1 win against Fulham, but they have taken only 10 of the 42 points on offer since then.
Wigan have actually lost less matches (10) than Roberto Di Matteo’s men (12), but, as the Latics have proven, only four wins from 24 fixtures is the sort of return that puts you bang in trouble.
Roberto Martinez hasn’t done much business in the transfer window to strengthen a weak squad so the Spaniard will have to make do with the players that got him into this mess. You can hardly blame Dave Whelan for keeping a tight hold of the pursing strings after seeing his team’s marquee summer signing, Mauro Boselli, head to Genoa on loan after the £6 million Argentine netted just once in six months for the strugglers.
Di Matteo has brought in Carlos Vela from Arsenal for the rest of the campaign and the Mexico international could provide the injection Albion need. Certainly, he could light up this encounter, so fingers crossed he’s given his bow.
Wigan beat West Brom 1-0 at home in November. That was the third time in a row that the host has come out on top and the sides’ respective home and away form this term suggests a repeat. The Latics have just two wins on the road, while Baggies have secured five of their seven victories in front of their own fans. A straight-forward punt on West Brom at around 1.75 is the way to go.
